The 2025 Free Agency Thread

Von needs to just hang for a while and then sign with a team later in the season that's going to the playoffs.

I'm not super high on Z, but there's some decent players on that list.

The EDGE crop isn't enticing at all for me. Hendrickson is the only possibly available needle mover, but that will also cost assets. Depends on what those assets may be.

I think we're going to see more Luvu on the EDGE this year if Magee and the rest of the LB corps can grow and mature.

I still have some pretty big concerns on the roster...

QB - All set. Daniels, Mariota, Hartman are a good group all things considered.

RB - Adequate. Robinson and Ekeler are both banged up a lot. Robinson can also be rendered ineffective for stretches and Ekeler can't be used on an every down basis. Rodriguez is an adequate backup who can have some production but he's not a guy that moves the needle. McNichols is similar. Wiley and JCM are largely unknowns. I do like Demetric Felton but he's not going to be the guy we need. Really wanted Judkins. He obviously went well before our second. Wanted Henderson as our "new" Portis. He also went before our pick. This group is adequate, though.

WR - Much improved. Terry, Deebo, Gallup, N. Brown, McCaffrey, Strachen are a much improved unit over 2024.

OL - Much improved. A potential OL to start the season (no Cosmi) of: Tunsil, Allegretti, Biadasz, Coleman, Conerly is a significant upgrade. When Cosmi returns if Coleman can move to the left it's even better. I also don't count Herbig out for the LG spot.

TE - Same. Adequate unit.

Offense is in much better shape. Only unit I look at now with a little bit of pause is RB.

EDGE - Red alert. This group isn't great. But I think there are some things that can help. If you look at this group as: Armstrong, Jones, Ferrell, Wise, Jean-Baptiste, Fehoko and TJM it's... in pretty rough shape. If you look at it and include Luvu and Kinlaw? It feels a bit better. But if this ends up being the group someone either needs to step up big or we're going to need to get creative schematically because this group is lacking top end. Though, to be fair to these guys... I do like the overall depth of the group. It's just not going to really help in a stacked division/conference as it pertains to pass rushing.

DT - I'm comfortable. Newton, Payne, Kinlaw, Holmes, Goldman and Day are an overall solid unit.

LB - Largely depends on what we have to do with Luvu to generate a pass rush. Wagner is Wagner. He'll be productive. But he is getting older. Magee needs to step up. Medrano and Bellore are relative unknowns. This group could go either way, but going into the season it's fine.

CB - I'm pretty happy here all things considered. Lattimore, Sainristil, Amos, Noah I, JJ... this is night and day from last year. Lattimore's health is a wild card.

Safety - This makes me nervous. It's Quan, who is a decent starter and then... not a whole lot. Not discounting guys like Reaves who have significant value to the franchise and on specs. But he isn't a big help on defense. This group makes me nervous.

Our defense isn't in great shape. DE is okay depth but not going to be a big help as a pass rush unit unless someone steps up. Safety is down right scary. Linebacker could be alright, depending on some development. But could go the other way. I do think it's better than the last Rivera unit. Not sure it's better than last year's unit across the board - but I am open to the idea that some development occurs and we are stronger.

Not a sexy topic but I have to believe that kicker is a code red position at this point. Have to go into the season with a consistent place kicker. I'm sure AP sees that and I'm sure guys will be brought in and that there will be a battle in the offseason to fix it.

At safety, was hoping we’d land Billy Bowman. Hopefully Harris fits well and Butler and/or Owens could step up if need be.

Lane is a nice addition to our receiver group, and then Osborne’s seems like a solid back end re-signing.

TE is the scary one for me. If Ertz goes down, who takes his spot? Ditto Bates? There’s a bit of hope with Sinnot/Yankoff/Turner for different reasons, but some concerns with all of them. Sinnot’s got the upside, but the drop off in play time wasn’t a great sign. Turner’s blocking was a pleasant surprise in preseason last year, but he also had some unfortunate drops (not the first time we saw that issue). Yankoff’s receiving chops are intriguing, but he’s light and really new to the position.

I feel like Von Miller replacing Fowler would be a nice addition--a part-time situational pass rusher. He can't possibly be worse against the run than Fowler was. Newton and Kinlaw need to be the faces of the defense.

I'd be good with Von for the 2nd half of the season-playoffs. I am big on dudes who play big in big games and in the playoffs.

I do think some just get off on the bright lights and national attention, and some not so much. Von is one of those dudes who thrive in big spots.

Jayden I think is one of those guys who fortunately also thrives in those big moments.

I felt bad for Jayden in the Championship game, he kept trying to keep us in the game while our defense couldn't stop the run and our special teams-offense continued to blow the game up for us with all those fumbles.

Hopefully 9 turnovers against the Eagles in 2 games will teach this team a lesson about ball security when they play the Eagles.

I love Quinn. Not sure yet about Whitt. I'll just say when they talk ball is life and are about turnovers. The Eagles actually live that credo. I recall an Eagles reporter talk on 106.7 before the championship game and was saying watch out for the Eagles punching the ball out. and the Washington radio guy (forgetting whom it was) said yeah, sure, OK. And the Eagles reporter then goes, you don't understand they really really practice the heck out of punching the ball out.

Hopefully, that now registers with our coaching staff.

I think if Ertz goes down (certainly not wishing for it) but that would push Sinnot into the forefront. Would definitely give a glimpse into whether he is the answer going forward and would make TE a must for next year if he is unable to capture the position. I don't think with Ertz producing we will know for sure what we have in Sinnot unless he gets the reps.

Good exercise from KDawg as to the roster. I agree with most of it.

For me as for the roster in brief

A. QB -- first 10 out of 10. I think Jayden is elite. And I don't think its silly to think he can even overtake Mahomes over time -- and that's not purely a homer take, some national reporters speculate the same. Mariotta is a great back up.

Before the off season 10 out of 10

B. RB. 6 out of 10. If Croskey-Merritt emerges it could be an 8. I expect Croskey-Merritt to ultimately grab the #1 spot. Robinson is a jag but doesn't suck and is at least a proven professional. Ekeler I think is better if you spell him more and he's fresh. Rodriguez I do think is better than Robinson but for whatever reason this coaching staff doesn't agree so I basically write him off. He averaged almost 1 yard a carry more than Robinson when he played so its not just an off beat coming from nowhere take.

Before the off season 4 out of 10.

C. WR. 8.5 Love Terry. I like Deebo. I think Noah Brown and Gallup will be fine at Z. I love Lane he was one of my favs in this draft.

Before the off season 5.5 out of 10.

D. O line. 8.5 with potential to go to 9.5. On paper its great we obviously need it to play out but lets run with optimism. Love Conerly. For those who still have doubts listen to Cooley's take on Sheehan's podcast. It's better of course with Cosmi returning at some point but while I never loved Wylie as a RT i do like him as a guard. We likely got our Chris Samuel, Jon Jansen or Trent, Moses combination now, finally after Ron wrecked that position.

Before the off season 4.5 out of 10.

TE: 7. Ertz if he stays healthy is still really good. Bates is one of the best blocking TEs in the league. Sinnott has been a dissapointment so far but heck he's at least at this point a good blocker.

Before the off season 7 out of 10.

D line: 5.5 out of 10. We lost a little pass rushing juice with Fowler but keep in mind much of his production was early, he was a non factor in the playoffs. Run-stuffing should be better with big dudes like Wise, Goldman, Kinlaw. Payne to me is a C plus player at this stage in his career but maybe with money on the line he finds his groove like his previous contract year when he made money signs with every sack. I think Newton is going to be better, no longer a rookie, and more time to heal from his injury.

Before the off season 4.5 out of 10.

CB: 8 out of 10. Love the Amos pick. Jonathan Jones is really soild. Lattimore is a wildcard but brings great pedigree. Sainstrill is good. Forbes and St. Juste were a hot mess.

Before the off season 5 out of 10.

Safety: 6 out of 10. Quan Martin had a good season playing for most of it with two seperated shoulders. That's insane. good player. I like Will Harris. Don't love the depth with Reaves and Percy.

LB: 9 out of 10. Slightly stronger with 2 younger LBs who can play the pass and perhaps spell Wagner. Luvu is a stud.

Before the off season 9 out of 10.

Adding another point to the pile in favor of Von Miller.

Bobby Wagner is revered in that club house as a legend-hall of famer, leader.

Von Miller, reading about him brings those some vibes, leader, etc. He's talked about locker rooms he's been on that are special versus others no so much. But in short, bringing leadership, adding to the culture is part of the soup with him from what I've gathered.

Von Miller then Zadrius Smith. Then a bug drop off for Judon.
I think I would take Smith. Miller at this point is a sub package rush specialist.

I think we end up with an edge player who plays significant snaps who we pick up after the final cuts. It’s the glaring area of weakness on this roster.

He's very much still making chicken salad out of chicken shit. We still are lacking real playmakers on the defensive side. Luvu is our best player, probably followed by Mikey. I worry about the inevitable drop off from Wagner--he's a HOFer but no one plays forever.

I think he does a really good job of scheming up pressure, but there are a lot of 40's and 50's in PFF's run defense ratings across our DL. That's worrisome--and none of the guys we brought in did much better.

I saw Lions fans complain about Smith against the run while digging up his numbers this morning. they have similar PFF grades against the run. Both pedestrian. But I haven't really watched either closely of late to have a hard opinion on it.

Realistically anyone we are picking up as a street free agent at this point of the year has holes/issues.

I guess as I think a bit more about this we have guys who can set an edge against the run in base - we need someone who still have some pass rush juice. Right now pass rush/pressure is going to have to be schemed.

Wild that they added a MLB and another starting level CB 1&2 this draft. They're probably going back to the SB.

For us, there were only really two reasons we lost games last year. Couldn't get short yardage/ Redzone TDs and turnovers.

I think we've improved a lot in those two categories. Our defense isn't going to scre anyone, but it did get better as the season went on and I think it'll be much improved this year. Maybe not with sacks and TOs but the blown coverages/PI calls and we should be able to at least slow the run down.

Feels like a much improved team that could get back to the NFCCG

SIP. assuming your attention is elsewhere right now..."you'll never walk alone".

Also, this staff has seemingly done a really good job taking care of our older vets in terms of managing playing time, rest, etc.

Agree and i do think Von Miller is a better pass rusher than Zadrius Smith in spite of the age gap. The locker room gravitas-leadership and history of clutch post season play is the kicker for me. But I'd be good with either signing. I see the argument either way. My argument is with those who think its an easy call for Smith.

My wife is from Liverpool. She’s a red.

Great city. I've been there twice. The first time over 20 years ago, the last time (partly to see a game) about 4 years ago. The City was totally transformed during that period.
