The 2025 Draft Thread

Logan and Craig had Jeremy Greene on Take Command. Best draft guest ever - that guy is hilarious, has watched 540 draft prospects and talks with people who work in the league. He joked that we have the same chance of getting Ezeiraku as Abdul Carter, meaning he thinks Ez goes a lot higher than where the mocks have him and I totally buy it. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes before Green and Pearce given the character concerns.

Yeah like Carter is kinda the perfect prospect, and then you've got 5ish guys who are def first rounder level players but they've all got their warts.

Stewart - production not there. Measurables amazing but can he turn that into actual production/play in the NFL. Also run defense was bad.
Mike Green - sexual assault allegations. There's too much smoke there
Mykel Williams - had more production than Stewart but also only 5 sacks a year so not as much production as people might like (of course a lot of that was scheme, he didn't get to rush the passer as much)
James Pearce Jr. - size is an issue, 6'1" 243, but also questions about his character

Donovan Ez is also a little smaller at 6'2" 248 but insofar as I know doesn't have any other real warts. Has good production, no character issues I'm aware of.

So it would not surprise me in the slightest if he ended up 2nd edge off the board.

Personally I still want Mykel to fall to us bc I think the production issues in terms of pass rushing are just scheme and he's gonna kill it in the NFL but I'm sure that sentiment is not unique to me and he probably goes much higher.

I do hope Mike Green is long gone before 29, and he probably will be, but I don't want us to even have to think about skill vs character.

Jalon Walker would be hype too like Greene was saying on Take Command. But as he notes, I keep seeing him mocked to Carolina.

My prediction is either Pearce or Green end up an Eagle

BOOOOOOOOO HISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

I am resigned to the fact that they are gonna get someone good. They somehow always manage to turn their misfit toys into pro bowlers bleh

With Lattimore rekindling the days of old by changing his jersey number to his Ohio State #2, do we still need to be looking at drafting a DB? :)

I am nowhere near the level that you guys are. I did watch a lot of Miami games this year. Restrepo may not be a burner but the dude gets open, has really good hands and definitely gets the YAC. He was making plays every game.

Will he translate to the NFL? Don't have a clue

Coming from the guy who is trying to sell that 4.6 for a RB isn't a death blow. If Restrepo at his size at WR, is legit a 4'8, that's IMO borderline a death blow. You can come up with plenty of comps for RBs in the 4'6's. But tough in this age to find comps for a good WRs at 4.8 plus let alone short WRs who play at that speed. Landry who is a bit bigger and ran in the 4'7s would be one and he was still faster.

Hopefully that 4'8 and change was injury caused or something like that because if not Restrepo would be a major unicorn if he is a big time WR at that size and runs a 4'8 and change.

Hey SIP, in your eyes, how are the best receiver separaters? I know speed and size do not necessarily come into play here.
I value this quality extremely high as I know you do. I am a real big fan of Higgins but the knock I have seen on him is there are occasions where the big guy doesn't separate well. That doesn't sit great with me once he is battling some of the physical NFL DB's

I got to think about it some. But off the top of my head:

Matthew Golden really strikes me as a seperator, even with players pressing him and being bracketed, he can juke-double move his way open. Someone mentioned me loving Terry before that draft, and asking for comps. Thinking about it a little, Golden might be the best Terry comp for me. I liked Terry because while a late bloomer, he seperated really well and was an explosive deep ball threat. and did other things well including run blocking. He actually ended up a different pro NFL stylsitically than what he was in Ohio State. He ironically isnt a killer seperator or deep ball threat in the pros but does everything else so well ironically. But in short, I liked how he moved when I watched him. There was some fluidity to it that stood out to me.

Golden lol has become like McMillan with the mock drafters -- once cool, but I gather because of prospect fatigue he's been knocked now some. I do agree with the one criticism I often hear about him which he doesn't look like he runs a 4.3 as far as playing speed. He looks fast but not that fast. I agree with that. I think part of that is he's more of a straight line runner and he has some build speed to him. Lets take Kyle Williams who ran slower. Williams is a jet and accelerates as soon as he gets the ball, so his speed jumps out more. Golden is more straight line, ala Felton. Williams has more wiggle albiet he's somewhat straight line but he accelerates faster or so it seems when watching him. I think like Terry, Golden will be a better NFL player than college one.

As far as Higgins goes, he seperates fine to me. It's not his super power but he does it well enough. Especially for tall-wide catch radius WRs like him, I look for their body control and can they contort their body and rise to the catch point or create a lateral cushion (like a TE) for the QB to hit them in right space. Jayden does that well. And his hands are freakishly good IMO. Soft hands. I value WRs who can catch the ball with CBs draped on them because the NFL is more like that.

It took me awhile to digest this point watching WRs over the years. That is, are WRs given space or not? Pressed or not pressed. Tight man coverage or off man. Jayden from what I recall was given a lot of tight coverage. He wasn't given many free releases so he had to work harder to seperate. For example, watching Kyle Williams, he's given so many space to seperate that its difficult to deduce what he would be if he was actually pressed or had to deal with tight man coverage. Jayden when giving free releases seemed wide open especially on the first level. But when pressed IMO seperated enough. But if you watch WRs who are given all the space in the world to get open, their seperation skills are going to look at least superfically fantastic.

PFF has a score for man coverage and Jayden has one of the best scores in this group.

I’m not sure if I’ve seen this anywhere, but Charles Grant, OT-William and Mary, ran a 5.05 40, with a 27” vert and an 8’11” broad jump.

I know he’s been talked about here, but Giddens could be a good match. He’s explosive, and can catch, but I don’t see that long speed like you do with some other guys. He looks like he gets caught from behind in the open field relatively often. On the other hand, that contact balance looks pretty great, and he has some shake to him.

He's shifty. He has long speed but agree it doesn't always materialize with him. Yet he did have one of the higher numbers of 15 plus yard runs in this group. 4th best in this class. He brings enough explosion. His issue is meh in the passing game and meh as a pass blocker. But I like him.

Am listening to it now, entertaining. Not sure I agree with all his takes but that's cool. I love Ezeiruaku. but to play devil's advocate, McGinn's ranking based on personel people's takes and their rankings often trump the mock draters as what happens on draft day. And they actually ranked Ezeiruaku lower than the typical mock drafter so that goes directly against Green's point that teams are higher on him than mock drafters. They got him as pass rusher 10. 2nd-3rd round. Behind guys like JT and Landon Jackson.

Who knows, will see. But at a minimum I don't take his view on that one as gospel.

But I agree with him, he's be a great get for this team. Am hoping he's wrong and Mcginn's scouts are right as for where he falls so we have a shot at him. If I was forced to pick just one guy at 29, it would probably be him.

I wonder who are the players on Peters' board that are too good to pass up on. If I had to guess, like a lot of us, his first choice would be to trade down, but that he woulldn't if X , Y, or Z landed on our spot. Who are X, Y, and Z?

My favorite slot guys for us are Chimera Dike Florida & Jerjuan Newton Toledo (Johnny's bro) but like Restrepo as well.
I can see where you are going with Dike. Gotta love a guy that not only is a fairly good WR that can be used in different roles but is also an accomplished returner and gunner!

Golden does seem to almost be in a world of his own with his separation abilities. I haven't paid a lot of attention to him as I sort of assumed he would not be available at 29.
Higgins is still my top guy followed by Emeka and Higgins teammate which does feel weird, 2 Iowa Staters.

There are a lot of players that are good but just not really NFL ready due to the speed and physicality portions. They will need time to mature into their true roles like we all wish from McCaffrey. If we hold off a little I am liking Tai Felton and Lane more as my next up.

One of the reasons I love Golden (he was my first pick WR choice in our last Bling Pig podcast) is because he reminds me of Santana Moss. The guy just gets open and if it's anywhere near him, he's coming down with the ball. He plays MUCH bigger than he is, and he's got the speed like Moss did to take it to the house at any time.

I wish I can get more video of Felton. From what I've seen and studying his stats, he screams to me Dyami Brown, the better 2024 version of him. A dude who you'd expect based on his measurables to threaten defenses on the third level but rarely does but does on occasion. I know his profile with some is he's a deep ball threat --speedy receiver. But watching him some and looking at his stats, he's more about the first level stuff. Sort of a poor man's version of Xavier Worthy. He's not a big time contested catch guy either. He has his share of drops and has one of the lowest average depth receptions in this class.

But I do like him on those first level passes and YAC and he looks to be a good punt returner. And maybe he can develop as a deep threat?

Kyle Williams IMO is a more dynamic version of Felton on the first level and also has IMO more potential as a deep threat. Lane is a slot. Also like Felton, first level, YAC guy. Also good punt returner. Felton looks more dangerous with the ball in his hands than Felton. But I like Felton's size better and that he can play Z.

The interesting thing here is that he seemed to imply he speaks with a lot of NFL and college people as well and that informs his view

Daniel Jeremiah who appears to be the most plugged in of all these guys with NFL front offices and bases his mocks on what he is hearing vs his grades had Ez going #19 in his last mock a couple weeks ago

Most of the prominent mock drafters are. McShay, Kiper, Yates, etc all say they talk to them. I didn't realize until recently how well Yates knows Peters. But none of that is a knock against, Greene, he was wildly entertaining. Great segment. And I am not ruling out he's right. But there is enough mixed info where I don't consider it slam dunk like he does that he won't be there at 29. At a minimum, Mcginn's scouts are usually not wildly off as to what happens on draft day.

McGinn's scouts have often beat the mock drafters, DJ included. I don't recall DJ cited as having one of the most accurate drafts but maybe i missed it. I know Standig has been fairly good in some years.

this dude who does them for Warren Sharp claims he has has the most dead on in recent mock drafts. DJ ranked 30th.
