The 2025 Draft Thread

I agree with you, I just can't believe its real for us. I think Maye and JJ are going to be good, too. I think Caleb will suck and be out of the league in 5 years. We definitely need to continue trying to hit on a QB though, because he's not playing 20/21 games every year.

Not sure about Caleb. But yeah agree about Maye and JJ. i am was one of the few last year who liked both Maye and Daniels. A lot seem to love one and slam the other. Maye looks like I expected him, too. Jayden is in another orbit than I expected. I was high on Jayden. I knew he worked hard. But I didn't know it was at this legendary level. I recall reading about him running through the playbook on the plane after being drafted on his team visit. Booking practice with his Qb coach the day after the draft. I recall reading and hearing that the dude doesn't stop working but something that can be hyperbole so i take it with a grain of salt. But I believe it all now.

I think it was Zach Ertz if I recall who said he showed up super early 5:30 ish one day during camp, he saw Jayden there and Jayden told him to keep it between them because he just wants to work versus caring about narratives about it. Quinn talking about his room was next to Kliff's room at the hotel they were staying at before the Arizona game and to late hours of the night he could hear Jayden and Kliff discussing the game plan. By the time, practice starts during the week, Jayden and Kliff already have a done a walk through in the ealry morning before the team arrives. And then you got the visual simulator. On and on. This dude is Brady level as far as work ethic.

He also has "it" as far as a clutch gene. Some players have it, some don't. He was Montana level clutch last year. Even his misses could have gone his way. The game againt the Steelers, Ertz got a first down at the end, the refs said no. BS. And heck even with that, i'd bet on a comeback if it weren't for Newton's penalty. And then the Dallas game with the missed extra point after another incredible comeback. Heck even in the championship game in the 4th quarter, they were in scoring position and if it weren't for that ekeler fumble, who knows how that game would have went?

Among other things, Jayden isn't helped much by the defense. They don't create turnovers for him to give him short fields. And this defense is horrendous at holding leads. They don't have the running game to put away leads so Jayden has to do the running himself.

I was Maye>JJ>Daniels, because Daniels just made it all look too easy at LSU that I didn't believe it would translate, but seeing BTJ and Nabers blow the doors off the league as rookies and Daniels too, kind of amazing really.

It's one reason I'm so gung ho about getting him a legit freakish weapon at WR. Jayden is going to make it really easy for a WR to be great. I love Terry, but 12 TDs? That's absurd. I think Daniels is about to be the most elite QB in the league and it won't be close. I think the closest analogy to me believing in Daniels is like Religion. I'm a hardcore athiest and I've seen God kind of feeling to Daniels. *Nobody reply to the religious reference please*

I do worry about injuries.

Two offseasons ago the Lions realized they were there, but needed some help. They draft Gibbs way too early (perceived at the time), then drafted LaPorta way too early (perceived at the time), and a WR who is just a burner.

This is what I want to give Jayden. We could be a complete team by going DE and CB in the draft, but I want to sell out our offense first. Let the points come easy. We'll finish defense next year.

Peters targeting defensive ends in NFL Draft

"Washington will likely take advantage of a strong defensive end draft class at pick No. 29 or 61. At least that’s a reasonable assumption — unless the front office goes with a combination of a cornerback, receiver/running back or the best player available. General manager Adam Peters covered his bases pre-draft at every position, including edge defender, which means he can focus on the talent and fit more than need," Standig writes.

Who knows, maybe Landon Jackson is their target. I like LJ a lot, had him rated #1 as a 43-5-Tech type but he does not have near the pass rushing juice of say Michigan's Josiah Stewart who is also not as good in the run aspect as LJ, which I think is a strong suit.

I was super early on Jayden, talked him up during the college season. Then that poster, who constantly sold Jayden, and bashed Drake Maye irritated me so I tried to bring balance to that debate, propping Drake up some, and lowering Jayden some. :) But once that poster vanished I became the Jayden guy again throughout that last month before the draft. What sold me was rewatching hiim, I watched every snap. I watched so much Jayden and Drake that there are no prospects that are even close to the amount of time I watched them. There was one youtuber who posted all throws of those QBs and it was fun to go through them game by game. Some others on the thread claimed to rewatch too and they'd said the more they watched the less they saw it in Jayden. I was the opposite, the deeper I dove, the more I loved what I saw.

When you watched every throw, you could see that some of Jayden's flaws that critics hammered him on -- can't throw to the middle of the field, doesn't throw well on the move, his great WRs just made him look good, etc -- all of it was unfounded. Jayden for example didn't throw many intermediate between the number throws and he didn't throw on the move a ton -- but when he did, wow. He was really good at it. There was really nothing he wasn't good at. Only weakness I recall seeing was pressure up the middle would flush him to the right and some defenses cued into that and stopped him. Arguably that's still his weakness.

To your point. Absolutely, I agree give him a legit #2 WR. Everything being equal, I think Jayden would benefit even more from a top RB then he would a great #2 Wr. But I see the argument either way.

I think the lack of running game makes it hard on this offense in four ways. 1. Tough to put teams away when you can't run the ball so it requires more Jayden late game heroics. 2. The lack of a running game requires Jayden to put himself at risk more because someone has to be a threat with their legs. 3. With the RPOs-RO a great running back should be lethal side by side with Jayden. 4. Should help the passing game by pulling in the safeties.

But no doubt a #2 WR would be big time for this offense, too. Especially versus the Eagles where they seemed to cue in on Terry, you need another passing threat. Fangio is very good at coming up with coverage schemes and clearly he's figured out how to bracket Terry well. We can't address it by hoping Ertz catches 20 passes. We need another dude who can threaten a defense.

I do think it doesn't have to be a Wr. Colston Loveland for example who once in awhile i see falling to 29 would be tempting. TEs who seperate are hard to stop. They are too big for the standard CB and too tough for a LB to cover. Zach Baurn is good in coverage but it wouldn't be easy for him to cover a dude IMO like Loveland. If the Eagles struggle with Ertz, imagine a younger and more spry version of him.

I part ways with most in the draft analyst community on the Bowling Green TE Fannin - I just think he is being overhyped too much for my taste.

I got in on Loveland early. I'm down. I agree on RB, too. I said months ago in this thread my WR,RB,TE 123 draft options and I haven't changed my mind. Give the kid all the tools imaginable. I LOVE that we resigned Bates. I still think Sinnott is our FB/TE guy and if we add a TE like Love? Awesome. The fact that guys like Ertz and Wagner want to come back again and keep playing is a huge tell for this team. HUGE.

Draft lines on day 3 like you should be doing and keep signing 1 yr FAs I guess. Until we have to pay JD and the gang we draft.

I can't take the Hurts hate though. How do you call Mahomes elite when he just got smoked, destroyed in the SB. Allen is elite I bet? No SB wins. I mean, Burrow is probably the best QB in the NFL. I think Jayden can be that good, but Mahomes is not elite anymore. Hurts is. 4 years starting and 2 SBs? You can't knock him about if he can carry a bad team, because its not real. He was a day two pick and QB3 at one point and has been in 2 of 4 SBs and MVP of one. The NFC is us and the Birds. That's it. Hurts leads that team.

Logan Paulson was talking up Landon Jackson, said he's his favorite player in the draft class, 25 to 45 range.

I got no hate for Hurts. I think he's very good. Not top 5 though. If it was Hurts who had to carry this roster, I think they'd have gone 9-8 last year. But Hurts on a loaded roster is excellent. I just don't think Hurts carries a mediocre roster. He's not on that level IMO. But he plays big in the playoffs and that matters. Some say he's in that same class with Dak. I get the point but to me he's better because I trust Hurts more in big games.

I just watched all the Kaleb Johnson's runs. I was hyped on him precombine. but a meh combine made me less enthused. So I rewatched. He's not as physical as Derrick Henry or as explosive as Barkley but he reminds me of them in one way. If he breaks free to that 2nd level, he's determined to go to the house and he does so often. He had one of the higher TD numbers, one of the higher 15 plus yard numbers, etc.

He's so hard to take down or even catch once he bursts to that 2nd level and comes off determined to take it to the house. Conversely, Jordan James seems the opposite of that. James will break 4-5 yards and look good doing it but comes off satisfied or lacks the confidenceor skill after that and braces to be tackled after his initial burst. The other dude who plays like that to me (get 5 yards and be braced to be stopped) is Brian Robinson. Not all the time but very often. Nothing of course is an all the time thing with any of these players.

But you know how Barkley just seemed determined to take it to the house after finding some daylight. Kaleb comes off the same way. He comes off looking for the big score and is so hard to tackle in space. Obviously, he doesn't have the freak talent that Barkley has. But even though he's not very fast. Kaleb is a big dude with very good contact balance and i think a potential doubles-homerun guy in the NFL. Again, pure speed isn't everything as for RBs. Plenty of fast guys are bust. Ditto, we have some guys who are really good who aren't burners like Bucky Irving, etc.

Kaleb has the best YPC numbers in this class against light boxes, almost 10 yards a pop. And he faced the 2nd most stacked boxes in this group. My only wonder for this team is Kaleb is so much an outside runner -- zone. Not so much an inside runner. But he wasn't bad at inside and gap runs from what I saw even though he didn't major in it.

lol, among all these running backs. Outside of Jeanty, Kaleb might have been last years defense biggest nightmare if he played like he did at Iowa. A big dude like Kaleb who can turn a corner on the edges and is hard to stop when he gets momentum would have been a nightmare for this defense.

He does have long breakaway speed after getting through the line. That's the thing though, his burst through the line is average at best. I think it could and would be an issue on ours. Maybe I'm wrong.

I am half way through rewatching Dylan Sampson.

He's interesting. Not a perfect prospect. He has issues -- fumbles and drops in the passing game. He looks smaller than the listed 200 pounds. And he faced mostly light boxes and had some of the better blockers in this class (very low number of teams penetrating at the line of scrimmage)

But...

The dude for a small fast guy runs so hard and keeps shifting his feet and turns where its tough to get a square shot at him to bring him down easily. He actually reminds me of Jordan James if James was fast and had some homerun ability. Like James, Sampson doesn't often break that 3rd or 4th tackle but he's good at breaking the first and 2nd.

He is not the most patient guy. He often just goes at it and quickly finds a hole versus waiting for his blocks to be set up. The Alabama game was an exception. He was patient in that one.

I think he's a good fit here because he runs inside quite a bit. In that way, he's like Henderson. Some of the other speedy backs, Tuten, Harvey, Blue like to turn the corner and run outside.

He's better at getting those tough yards than you would expect for someone his size. He's not as explosive or a big play waiting to happen as you would expect with his size and speed either.

He does have long breakaway speed after getting through the line. That's the thing though, his burst through the line is average at best. I think it could and would be an issue on ours. Maybe I'm wrong.

He's better with some runway, no doubt. Having said that, he is more used to stacked boxes than anyone in this class sans Mullings. As Warren Sharp said about him: "everyone knew he was getting the ball". Iowa is run heavy.

So many of us are touting Henderson. Me, too. Henderson struggled the most in the class when facing loaded boxes and when the D line penetrated. My point is if we are banking on Henderson, we also need to have some optimism that our O line will be good. Henderson makes you pay when you get lighter boxes. Only dude with a better YPC against lighter boxes was ironically Kaleb.

So a bet on Henderson and Kaleb is also a bet on our O line.

If we are worried about our O line. Then dudes like Skattebo, Damien Martinez, Judkins and to a lesser extent Jordan James, Devin Neal. Dudes that are good at getting tough yards and breaking tackles early.

Kaleb is interesting. He's in that same type of theme as Henderson IMO if we get past the 40 time stuff. Look Henderson isn't as fast as Harvey, Tuten, Blue, B. Smith, and probably Sampson. And his speed is almost identical to another 7 backs who are projected lower than him. Yet his explosion is sick and he's a homerun guy. He has "it" when it comes to making defenders miss in open space in a way that plenty of faster Rbs can't. Kaleb is the same way. It comes in a different form. Treveyon is 202 pounds. Kaleb is a 225 pound dude who is more physical in open space and has some of Henderson's elusive ability to make defenders miss.

I do like Henderson over Kaleb. But Kaleb i think translates also to the NFL. At a minimum he likely will be one heck of a doubles hitter. And I love that mindset of taking it to the house, which he seems to have. Obviously, i don't know what he's thinking when he's running but watching him he comes off determined to score. Some of those plays come off like pure determination where it looks like he's about to go down but he keeps his balance and bounces off the tackler. If there are three defenders to evade in front of the end zone, he seems determined to evade all three. And the anayltics seem to back all of these points.

I think he suffers from the biggest draft fatigue among these RBs. Months ago there was some conversation about whether it was he or Hampton as RB, two. After running in the 4.5's, he seems to be the most forgotten guy in this group. I had to reaquaint myself with him today, and I liked a lot what I saw. I actually enjoyed watching him over Sampson.

Johnson's speed is undeniable after getting past the LOS. I go back to last season and the Oline and some of the issues with BRob was on him if not most of why our rushing game didn't work. Some resides with the Oline themselves though. Acceleration is a need, I would think coming into this season. To me, Henderson is the RB that fits best in our O. Skattebo and Martinez have very good acceleration too getting past the LOA and are workhorses as well that would fit in well with our O. I'm still stuck on Woody Marks from USC though. In a snap of a finger he burst through the LOS.

This is why I am not as high on James as others like your comparing with Kaleb. He played behind a really good OL that created a lot of pretty good holes for him. I understand James can at times make himself small and get through a hole but so many of his yards came from good sized holes. I'd much rather take the battle tested Kaleb

If you are worried though about the O line not doing its thing, statisitically speaking Henderson would be the worst fit. Almost 50% of the time that defenders penetrated the line of scrimmage Henderson was stuffed for no yards. On that front he was the worst in this group. Dead last. Henderson's strength is making defenses pay when they use light boxes -- so in other words often in passing downs if you aren't expecting a run, watch out as to Henderson. The more I read and digest Henderson, I think McShay is wrong and just about every other mock drafter is right and that is Henderson goes in the 2nd not the late first. Don't get me wrong, I want Henderson but he's not the perfect back for two reasons -- 1. he's a rotational back, not one who gets you tough yards generally so not a featured one. 2. injuries. And I have faith that this O line will be good.

I like Woody Marks. Judging by mocks, buzz, etc. He's likely a 7th rounder or goes UDFA. I think some are sleeping on him as a pass caching back. Sort of like how we use Ekeler now. He's one of the least physical backs in this group, one of the lowest break tackle rates, also one of the lowest yard after contact numbers. He also has one of the lowest elusive numbers from PFF which speaks to he's not as good at evading defenders compared to most in his class. So in short, he's sort of the opposite of a Skattebo type as to thriving with physicality. Then you add him having one of the lowest RAS scores. And he's already 24. So I buy that he's going to drop. the thing about him is he can be what Kelvin Bryant used to be back in the day. A good pass catching third down back. He has soft hands. While he's not a break tackle kind of a dude as runner. He's elusive in space and a good pass blocker. If Marks is all they do at Rb to me its "meh". But if they double down and take two, I'd love it.

Yeah I am not really a big Jordan James guy but i keep watching him to try to get it as for why some are high on him. And I'll give that he's good at penetrating and making sure he gets at least something. But yeah good point about his O line.

The biggest sell for me with him is he's consistent at getting singles. Some defend or for that matter slam Robinson for being a good singles hitter but nothing more. I actually don't think Robinson is a good singles hitter at best he's a streaky one IMO.

Really like your singles hitter analogy with both of these guys. I agree that BRob who I really thought of as a consistent singles, doubles guy coming out of 'bama has proven to only be that on occassions and similar to James, reliant to a big degree on the OL giving him something to work with. He can't do it on his own, my large surprise and disappointment with him these past couple of years.

I also loved that you brought up Kelvin Bryant and think he does compare to Marks. Marks is a dude that if in the right situation could be a decent role player and worth more that a 7th.
