Shanahan and 2014

Trades do not absolve teams from paying off the full guaranteed part of any contract. We had to pay Slabworth the second he signed the contract. Nothing could change that unless the team you were trading him to was willing to absorb that hit. And no one would have.

You miss the point though. The soap opera would have been over a year earlier and we would have received a higher pick in trade TWO drafts earlier.

Also we could have then concentrated on taking the cap hit over 2 years while we were still building a foundation of younger players and picks.

We could have dealt with the Hall contract separately and perhaps a year later and spread out the pain more evenly.

This all might have led us to surmise that trading three first rounders for ANY player was something we could not really afford to do in 2012.

Who knows, if we had taken our cap medicine in 2010 and 2011 we might have ended up with the first pick in 2012 and a chance to get Luck with ONE draft choice.

You're drawing conclusions and we haven't even seen the end result of that decision Bulldog. If trading our first that year, and two additional firsts was the cost to get Griffin, I'm betting that 10 years from now it looks like the best damn money we ever laid down. You'll never have a better moment to dispute that, and God knows plenty of folks are enjoying that moment. But what it cost to get him was what it cost to get him. Oh - and by the ****ing way, Redskins fans were CLAMORING for that move - in fact, would've burned Shanahan alive had the team not made that move, for decades to come. I happen to think it was the right move. Saying we didn't need to move up to get him, even if true - well, that's just nonsense because you can't know that until after the fact.

Now, having trading the farm to get him, does that delay this team's progress and the ability to build a team around him, maybe even dramatically so? Absolutely. But we knew that when we made the move. It was a calculated risk. You are arguing it was a stupid move. I'm telling you, you have no way of knowing that. If this year proves to be a bump in the road, trial by fire, anomaly kind of a year for Griffin, and he's a future Hall of Famer (which is quite possible), you will have been dead wrong.

The discussion around all of the other stupid moves Shanahan and company have made (pretty much every move they've ever made according to many here) is a separate one. But there's no way you can, with any authority or certainty, call the move to get Griffin a mistake.

The compensation for Griffin was higher than what the Broncos paid for Elway or the Giants gave up for Eli Manning.

Now tell me grading out the three players, which one was thought to be most ready to play in a pro style offense and a can't miss prospect?

My point here us not to slam the team for potentially taking Griffin to develop him, but since he worked in a simplified system in college and would need coaching I continue to believe the price was too high.

As Warren Buffett once said "it's not just the ability to pick the right stock but to pick it up at the right price that makes all the difference".

Or - we can patiently wait until the team recovers from the cost of picking up our franchise quarterback - and watch the team move down the path that was necessarily delayed (if we wanted RG3 leading us under center for the next 15 years). Of course the price was too high. Unless you are the worst team in football, or happily stumble into a franchise guy with a later pick, it's always going to be too high.

As Jimmy Buffett once said, “It takes no more time to see the good side of life than to see the bad.” :)

Well, it's a good bar bet to revisit in 5 years.

My guess is that whatever Griffin becomes in the NFL any real success will come under a different staff and front office.

If Shanahan had made better decisions in 2010 and 2011 perhaps there would have been more assets here to ease Griffin's transition and allow him to come into the league and start out running a more traditional offense and he would be further along the way to where Luck and Wilson have already arrived.

Luck played a whole different style and Wilson has a strong supporting cast. What assets are missing from his development other then an offseason to develop? Hes got an established run game, a pro bowl caliber wr, a top 10 TE and a coach willing to taylor his offense to the QBs strength (something shanny was supposedly not willing to do).

What would handcuff his progression, imho, would be changin his offensive philosoghy and making him learn a whole new system.

Where to begin?

Well, how about an OL that was better than backup quality as a unit going from LG to RT?

How about having more than one legit WR ? Manning in Denvet has three or four WRs that get open and catch the ball . He has three tight ends that can rotate in and out as solid receivers.

How about constructing a defense that can stop somebody and make a 14 or. 17 point lead hold up?

Most importantly , how about starting Griffin out in Year 1 with a mindset of having him learn how to read defenses and develop a semblance of sophistication on offense as the season progressed rather than looking for the most common denominator and depending upon his pure athleticism in a college simple scheme ?

It 's funny but Jaworski said last year after showing highlights of Griffin 's 76 yard run that while it exhibited his tremendous ability with his feet this attack was not adequately challenging his mind as an NFL passer .

This, combined with the fact that MS did not even try to put a better line in front of RG3 or inexcusable offenses imo.

I remember an interview with RG3 last year after a game he had a bunch of rushing yards. He was asked something about Mike Vick and his response was that he wanted to be more like Aaron Rogers, not Mike Vick.

His passing game looks much more like Dirtball Donovan McNabb lately.

The OL and special teams are historically bad and that is on Shanahan.

Im falling away from being hellbent to keep shanny here another season. Griff isnt progressing consistently. Whether its his fault, his position coach, shanny or Lil shanny, I have no idea. My gut is starting to think he does want out, and that is unhealthy...

I still think changing systems is a set back, but playing fora coach who is only here so he doesn't miss out on $7 mil is exponentially more detrimental. Not saying that's what he's doing, but if it is, we really have problems

Who cares about system change?

These systems don't work!

The 3-4 has been a dud for 4 years.

The current special teams coach has taken that unit into the toilet with his philosophies on handling kicks and coverage.

On offense, we need some sanity.

Get OL that can protect the qb!

Worry about having two pass receiving tight ends or a younger slot receiver AFTER getting the linemen.

I couldn't agree more. If I'm coaching this team, I spend the majority if my FA resources bringing in quality olineman. Everything else can wait to some extent. The number 1 priority should be setting up RG3 for long term success with protection and a system that fits his skills that he can develop into a complete QB in.

I was meaning more along Griffins development... not the defense or special teams. I meant Griffin having to learn a new system will be a setback towards his progression as an NFL Qb

No, I don't believe so because almost any other coach coming in here is going to put Griffin in a position where he is going to be asked to learn a pro style set and run plays that Kyle evidently took out of the playbook in Year 1.

What annoys me the most is that Shanahan was so insecure and concerned about taking his lumps in 2012 with a rookie quarterback learning a more sophisticated scheme that he deliberately made things simple to squeeze out wins that season to the detriment of the player and team's long-term development.

Bill Parcells took a 1-15 Dolphins team to 11-5 and a playoff berth the next season. Bill Walsh took the 49ers from 2-14 to 7-9 and then 13-3. Johnson went from 1-15 to 7-9 and then 11-5 in Dallas.

Here Shanahan has lost 10, 11, 6 and then 13 (??) over four years?

Pretty piss poor by any standard.

Anytime a player has to learn a new playbook, its going to take away from development of fundamentals.

I'm not saying shanny is what's going to be best for him as a player in the long run... But a new offense is not going to automatically mean griffin takes on a 'pro style qb' game.

Again, just a general statement. Its looking more and more in my point of view that shanny wants out, and that itself will be more detrimental then anything.

Agreed. But you need to first present the scheme and then take the time to develop the player.

In my mind Griffin is heading into the offseason far behind where he could have been with a different approach.

Look at Tannehill. He started games his rookie year and took his lumps. This year he came back a better player for the experience.

Philbin worked with Aaron Rodgers and put together an NFL regimen for his qb.

After the look I saw on Snyder's face when Dallas scored the TD to win, I would be surprised if there was no one fired by day's end. It was looking like Shanahan would stay with some major changes in the works, but I don't see it now.
