Very exited today.
backstory: since settling down with my wife (15ish years ago) I quit taking care of my body. Got away with it for a long time, but it caught up with me the last few years. But as 40 started to approach I decided my goal was to be in the best shape of my life when I hit 40 - now only a few months away. That began by putting on 20lbs with weight lifting, going from 170 to 190 (I’m 6 feet tall) and getting my mile time down to under 8 minutes. I actually started running what is a 5k (3.2 miles) in 30 minutes twice a week.
Anyways - looking at the community board at my kids piano lessons, saw a flyer for a BJJ gym. Decided that was next. Started researching and decided BJJ wasn’t for me, I wrestled through high school, I get it’s different but it’s so similar I decided to pass. Instead, I started up Muay Thai.
Funny aside - I misread the schedule and showed up to the last day of the August unit instead of the first day of the September unit. August’s unit was defensive tactics. Coach says hey you’ve wrestled, it’s just defensive tactics, you’ll be fine. I get on the mat and he starts class and announces we’re doing sweeps. 60 minutes of fucking sweeps. For day 1.
( if that doesn’t mean anything to you, here’s a YouTube video of what I went through on day one as a 39 year old…
)
Anyways. I was instantly in love with it. Reminded me of the wrestling environment. After a couple sessions I decided I’m hooked. Ordered some gloves, shin guards, a Muay Thai heavy bag and a heavy bag rail system to install in my basement gym, and some odds and ends to maintain everything. And it all showed up today

no more borrowing equipment.
Can’t wait to install this tonight after practice or tomorrow, and start practicing 30-45 minutes a night in the basement. It’ll also help me teach both kids. And give me something to do at night.
Super stoked. It’s also nice my kids finally get to see one of their parents commit to something like we’ve been forcing on them with sports and things like music lessons. They used to complain when it was practice time. But since I started, and they’ve seen how I’m exited to go to practice, and I come home so happy and excited afterwards, they’ve started doing the same with their practices.
Seriously doubt I’ll ever get into the competitive fighting scene, I’m a bit old for that… but definitely sparing sessions and traveling with the group to other gyms for open sparring sessions. But it’s fun and exciting nonetheless.
