Random Commanders Thoughts

But a limited skill set unfortunately.

Yes...although I will confess that there is a part of me that would love to see Gruden take that limited skillset along with all the positives (unselfishness, humility, work ethic, heady decision-making, etc...) and see how far we could go with it...

Well, since I started this, let me stick my toe back in the water.
not at all Miles. The GM is on the front end - he builds the roster that coaching then takes to the next level.

building a roster is a process. the builders apply a methodology. chance/uncertainty plays into this like everything else in life. that doesn't mean, ipso facto, that everyone should throw their arms in the air and not approach the problem in a logical, disciplined, organized, planned, implemented and executed fashion. are you and others really arguing that this shouldn't be the process? or are you arguing that no one should be held accountable for results because...try as you might....uncertainty/chance play too large a role?
No one, certainly not myself, means to suggest that player evaluation is so unpredictable, that one should just throw darts at a board. Though I'd be willing to bet that that approach would also hit on a good number of successful early round selections. The main thing I've been trying to do, is point out the fact that the best GM's in the business, using every type of methodology/approach imaginable, can, and do, still draft players that fail to live up to their evaluations. For a variety of reason. Some by a long shot. Also, that every team in the league, practically every year, misses on an UDFA that turns out better than half the draftees in his class. I'm not poo-pooing the process. Just stating fact. Indisputable fact. In hopes of enlightening some people. that, if Mr McGloo happens to draft some players that flop, it doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's doing. And this fanbase, who've grown touchier than Felix Ungar over putting your feet on the coffee table, from losing their collective minds, 6 months into what we all hope is a years long successful tenure here.

btw....the farming example...aside from the fact that farmers take measures to reduce the impacts of events like weather....how often does that happen? would farmers stay in business if their crops were ruined...say 50% of the time (i.e., 50% of each annual growing season)? since that is the analogy that has been put in play...would a 50% hit rate on draft picks reflect a "good" decision-making process? if it's less than 50% then there is less "chance/uncertainty" and the argument for a rational approach gains even more weight.
BTW, the farming analogy was ****ing brilliant! Should not an organization plant the seeds of success...nurture and care for them...so that they grow and bare fruit? Brilliant!
And, not to turn this into a Green Acres thread, but have you not observed the decline of the family farmer over the last 50 years? The unpredictability of circumstances beyond their control have played a major part in their decline. I've known many farmers who went under due to too many successive years of drought, flood, hail, hurricane, market fluctuations, etc... Even with them doing everything humanly possible to prevent, or absorb such tragedies.

I'm talking about the process............ I'm not claiming uncertainty can be eliminated.
Finally, you agree with me. I too, am talking about the process. I'm claiming certainty cannot be achieved.

Spot on, Ax, including the unfortunate fact that some fans get a little trigger-happy about declaring someone a bust-whether coach or player at the first hint of a less-than perfect performance.

This is the only thing I still find puzzling. I don't recall anyone stating or even hinting that "certainty" is achievable.

Fans probably need to be more patient with coaches, especially first time Head Coaches. But on the player front fans are generally pretty fair. Guys that produce are rightfully praised, but when fans call a player. Bust, it's usually because the player is sub-par. I'm trying to think of a player that Skins fans have declared a 'bust' who then went on to prove them all wrong either here or elsewhere. There have been a few who weren't popular here (Carlos Rogers and Brandon Lloyd leap to mind) but went on to be serviceable. But generally speaking, fans are too easy on marginal players, not overtly harsh judges.

Sports Radio here and Dallas called him out for it and stated that atleast RG wasn't harsh. It just hurts more when it's your guy getting called out. ;)

my TV is on between NFL Network as well as BSPN and I dont see it anywhere...when Griffin did it, it was even on the ticker at the bottom. Hell, they had that troll d-bag on sportscenter to "discuss" it with him.

Right on, my brother.

I know. I was just being a smart-ass. :)

I haven't missed anything. I am addressing how one deals with uncertainty in every walk of life. your shot in home example (with obvious redskin tie-in): you telling me a team can't assess who a player associates with, where they live, the activities they engage in....and not make some risk based decisions?

I'm talking about the process - something you have steadfastly avoided. I'm not claiming uncertainty can be eliminated.

Al, I'm on your side when it comes to building a roster, making every assessment you can to eliminate as much uncertainty as you can, making all the right moves so to speak, and there's still the stuff that is out of your control. All 3 of my examples are Redskin related actually.... I'll address the one you chose. The team has only so much control of the points you bring up. They have little to no say about where your off season home is. Short of clear gang relations, you can tell a player you don't advise them to associate with some people, but you can't force them to do it short of cutting them. Where they do have a good deal of say is in activities they get involved in, which is in the wording of most contracts. Stuff like motorcycle riding... rock climbing... hang gliding. Can you tell a player he can't go on a charter boat fishing ? Lots of accidents out on the water every year. Hell, more people are injured in the home doing what would be seen as normal activities, like taking a shower and falling. The point was, and still is, there are always factors that can come into play that nobody has any control over.

Nope, Krappernick is a douche and reacted poorly. He just doesn't play for the Redskins' so I don't give a shit.
My point was more about the mediots who went overboard and not so much redskins fans who made a stink.

OK, but this happened yesterday and I saw it all over Twitter and heard them discussing it on sports talk. I don't watch NFLN or BSPN so I don't know how they reacted to Robert v. Krappernick.

Ok, I know and you know that they reacted differently. But I can feel this is going down a bad road.

You're reading something into this that isn't there. You asked where the outrage is and I expressed my feelings. You clarified what you were looking for and I told you there were many who were calling Krappernick an idiot on Twitter and sports talk radio.

Like I said, I can't speak to the 2 outlets you mentioned because I refuse to give them my time. Sounds like your outrage with them supports my decision not to watch either.

Next time people think we have it bad.....remember this:

The chargers and raiders have just released a statement that they are looking to build a joint stadium in LA.

Poor them. LA is full of other teams fans. They have usc, the doyers, and the bahahalakers. Fail.

And the rams are apparently going, too. I can't see how 3 nfl teams go to one city...but ouch.

If the Danny moved and left the colors, I'd be ecstatic.

It would take two minutes to get a new owner and team here.
You're one of the few. And ask the Browns how easily it goes to get a team back in your town.

Finally, you agree with me. I too, am talking about the process. I'm claiming certainty cannot be achieved.

I have been agreeing all along. you all have ignored my argument because your objectives were actually totally unrelated to uncertainty - they are aimed at the fanbase and positioning/buttressing what you expect McL's actual performance record will turn out to be. which is fine and has merit! I would only chime in that while McL may indeed end up on the short end of the prediction meter from time to time - what matters, again, is that he is comparatively better at it than all the other GMs. that is the deciding metric, in my mind, and what the fanbase needs to focus attention on. that, obviously, will take several years to establish.
