Random Commanders Thoughts

Wow, hate to hear that.

So much for an even QB competition then, where nothing would be handed to anyone.

It appears Cooley was right.

I have no idea what the benefit of saying that could possibly be, unless Griffin's ego really is that fragile.

And this is going to piss off Cousins.

What has Cousins done to even warrant an 'open competition'? Throw into triple coverage repeatedly and give up 3 INTs a game? Cousins flat out had a legitimate chance to win the job last year. All he had to do was look competent, and he instead looked like he was crapping his pants under center during most of those games. He was so bad, he got replaced by a 3rd string scrub who by comparison looked like football Jesus returned.

If anyone should be pissed, it's McCoy who is the only QB who actually looked like a decent option under center last year.

I think there are benefits to naming a presumptive starter. The presumptive starter gets nearly ALL the reps with the first team offense, he's not sharing them with some dubious competitor. That's why Gruden makes this call early. It probably does help Griffin's ego (and yeah, I think it's pretty fragile), but I think the rationale is to eliminate early drama, get some consistency under center for all of the offense, and to give Griffin once last legitimate chance to show progression, improve his play, and see if he can develop into a solid starter before we decide to cut bait after this season.

Griff was the starter at seasons end, Kirk was on the bench.
There are currently two QB's under contract, one was starter the other back up.
Announcing this well before going into camp means nothing more than status quo, there will be competition and if Kirk proves he can displace Griff then he will.

Would we, or any other team in the league, even consider drafting a QB right now who has already had two major ACL injuries on the same knee? No chance in a million years. Wouldn't that be viewed as the stupidest draft pick in franchise history?

So why would we ever even think of extending him? Is it even possible to extend him to a multi-year contract? To guarantee him $17 or $20 million a season and to actually believe he can stay healthy for four or five years? It's not even an option, right? So what's even the point?

There is no conceivable scenario in which he's in our long term plans here.

Shanahan's version of the zone system makes chicken salad out of your quarterback. Those undersized linemen who get their run assignments down struggle mightily when having to pass protect.

When Gibbs came back Jon Jansen said they were running a 1992 offense in 2004.

Ditto for Shanny here, he was trying to recreate what he did in 1997 and 1998.

But he didn't have Elway and Davis and in the intervening years the scheme was exposed.

Now we are back to a philosophy of drafting bigger, stronger men to block smaller, lighter ones.

One of the benefits? It's easier for college draftees to come in and contribute in a power- based scheme right away.

Another? The way you run the ball helps to define what kind of team you are.

The Redskins have been known as a finesse offense with a small line and mostly smallish receivers and TEs.

Remember all those issues in short yardage and goal line?

The Redskins had a lot of trouble gaining six inches even with the additional TE or OL in the game.

Third and goal from the one became a passing down here.

Glad to see we are going to set about changing that.

here is an honest question:

You seem to be all about Griffin and his knee injuries...and, yes, they are legitimate concerns. But why aren't you ever as concerned about Winston or even Gordon's off field antics that cause just as many issues for teams as you are about Robert?

I think it is pretty obvious to everyone that this is a contract year and that he is NOT getting that extension money. I am pretty sure even Robert knows that.

So after years of telling everyone he had complete control, Shanahan is now saying that he wasn't in control of the final call on the RG3 trade? I seem to remember him peacocking all over the place after it was done and making the playoffs.

How convenient to shed the responsibility in the media now when everyone is just dying to get Dan Snyder's name back into the mix.

I hate him.

So if we aren't extending him, and he's not going to be here a year from now, what's the point in making him the starter this season?

Cousins and Colt may be lesser players, but at least they are relatively healthy players, and a case could be made for signing one of them long term if they can prove themselves this season.

Can a good argument be made for gambling on Griffin long term with his health concerns? If we did sign him for 5 more years and he went down in year one we'd be screwed for an additional four years.

Maybe I'm alone in this thought, but it seems like a waste of time when looking 1-3 years down the road.

Although I suppose we could develop another QB while RG3 plays out this season. Maybe that's the thought process.

If he's not being asked to run the read option and can develop into a more traditional QB then the knee is a non-issue. So, if he somehow turns the corner this year and begins to shine as a pocket passer, you are damn right we'll extend him.

Yeah, we should just cut a guy under contract just because we aren't going to extend his contract.

Lets see, we could sign him to a fresh contract during the season, we could sign him to one after the next season, and if we wanted to we could even franchise tag him if he's worth it.

Colt McCoy is not a healthy player. He is a career backup who now has a neck injury. And nobody said either one of them couldn't take or earn the job from Griffin. They could very well outplay him during camps or preseason. But for this moment right here, right now Griffin is the starter.

I just don't have access to know if a Winston, Gordon or Trent Williams type will remain clean and have great careers or not. It's always a risk with players like that. All you can do is have faith that they make the right decisions like Trent is apparently doing.

But they are all healthy. None of those three have serious physical concerns.

so you care about health more than anything else? Ryan Leaf was healthy, so was JaMarcus. Plenty of true busts are "healthy" if that's all you care about.

It's definitely not all I care about--far from it.

But if two players are relatively equal (not saying Kirk or Colt are equal to RG3) and one player is healthy and the other has had two ACL's......it's not even a question.

I would hope we would seriously consider extending him if he plays very well this year. Based on current information only, at this point in time right now, it would be a poor idea to extend him now. But if he regains his form and plays well? New data will have come in, and that should cause us to reconsider the new data at that time.

Are you telling me that if he stayed healthy next year, and Gruden works the QB magic on him that we were all promised and Griff looks like a top 7 QB, you WOULDN'T resign him next offseason?

Sam Bradford is a much better pocket passer than RG3 at this time. It's not even close at this moment.

Bradford has also had two ACLs.

Would you give Bradford a 5 year contract right now? I certainly wouldn't. That's when the light turned on for me about our situation here.

That's really a tough one, isn't it?

To try and remove all my personal emotion/homerism/I own 2 RG3 jerseys out of the situation, I just try my hardest to think objectively.

And when I ask myself if I would feel comfortable drafting a QB right now (John Smith) who has already had 2 ACLs. a dislocated ankle and a concussion or two.....and then plan to build my franchise around him, the answer is no. I don't see how I could do that.

To be a backup for 4-6 games a season if necessary on a cheap contract? Yes, I could see that. It would still be a gamble, but it wouldn't cripple us.

To guarantee $17 to $20 million a season to be my starter for four or five years? No, I couldn't do that.

Bradford 2012 - 3700 yards 18TDs 15INTs
Griffin 2012 - 3200 yards 20TDs 5INTs

Bradford 2013 - 1687 yards 14TDs 4INTs
Griffin 2013 - 3200 yards 16TDs 12INTs

You cant just make up things like "Bradford is a much better pocket passer" when he isnt better at ANYTHING and is paid 10x the amount Griffin is.

Griffin was rookie of the year AND has made the playoffs....has Bradford?

Griffin 2014--4 TDs, 6 INTs, 33 Sacks

It's hard to compare any two players in different systems. Different O-lines, RBs, WRs, etc... For example, we may have a worse O-line. But Bradford doesn't have Alfred Morris, Desean Jackson or Garcon.

But I believe most would concede at this point that Bradford has always been more of a traditional pocket passer throughout college and his NFL career--what Griffin is trying to be now.

And I definitely couldn't see signing Bradford to a new 4 or 5 year contract for big $$.

so, wait.

you said: Bradford is a better pocket passer than Griffin and its not even close

but NOW you say: its hard to compare two players in different systems.

Bro, why? Seriously, why?
