Random Commanders Thoughts

Yep, can’t see us giving Allen any more guaranteed money at 30.

Again he is not the same player he was a couple of years ago. He’s had some injuries but nothing that serious to indicate his career would be impacted.

Just think building over multiple drafts with very high picks a DLine that was supposed to become elite and it never got close to that. I really thought Allen and Payne would be much better this year but they have both fallen off a cliff. I would look at trading both of them before the deadline this year. We have Newton who may turn out in the long term to be better than either of them

Never really thought Allen and Payne would turn into a poor man's Stubblefield and Wilkinson.

Winning is contagious so I'm holding out hope that Allen and Payne get caught up in it and start producing again.

this is one of the reasons in the salary cap era teams really can't afford to stack too many high picks or name free agents in a particular position group.

talent AND money needs to be spread throughout the team so it is in fact a team and not just a situation where you have say a defense with 2 great starting corners and a free safety making top 3 money but no defensive linemen or linebackers of any quality.

poor front offices don't allocate resources over the roster so that there is balance between offense and defense and among position groups.

I laugh when people say 'well, we have a great running back already but the best player on our board is a runner so we are going to take him at #11 overall', etc.

That is NOT the way to build a winner. If you already have a franchise back then you trade the pick down to someone who wants to take a Bijan Robinson or other and select at another position and have an extra pick or two to spread across the roster.

We didn't do that here. We kept loading up on defensive linemen with the same 'BPA' bullshit, never taking into account that even if these players are very good you still have to PAY THEM down the line and under the cap can only realistically keep 2 of them if they all ball out.

You won't see Peters do that. You didn't see Belichick or Brett Veach in KC do that either.

A trade after 2013 would have seemed so crazy at the time, but it would have worked out so well. Griffin’s value was still really high, and it completely cratered after that.

They traded the wrong DT late in the pre season. Allen will be gone by next season and Payne the following season.
Eh, I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. If Allen/Payne play to their potential, they are much higher level athletes. It hasn’t worked so far. We’ll see what happens.

I think it’s likely Allen is gone. I’d have to look up the cap hit for trading Payne. If they could get anything for him, they might get rid of both in the off season.

For Payne the 2025 dead cap hit would be 25.8m if he was not on the roster. The cap hit if he remained on the roster would be 26.170m. So…

For Allen it’s 6.0m & 23.0m. Again, so…

but we have the most cap room in the NFL right now.

we have a lot of players on rookie contracts and by trading Dotson and loading up on picks in 2025, we will get even younger next season.

so, the time to take a cap hit or two is NOW.

I would not advocate cutting or trading both of these players as I see Payne on a number of plays collapsing the pocket and creating pressure even if he doesn't get a sack to add to the stats. So, he's still a contributor in my mind.

Allen on the other hand has slowed down noticeably and $6M cap hit again is nothing for a roster that is tens of millions below the others in the NFC East.

I wouldn’t even consider moving Payne under his contract terms.

Allen if his play doesn’t significantly improve? In a heartbeat. I’d be more than willing pay the 6m cap hit to avoid paying him 23m in additional salary.

Peters won't pay Allen $23M at age 30 in 2025. I think you can make book on that.

We have the cap room now, but I suspect we are planning to be spenders next season and that money can go very quickly. I imagine they'd be cautious in both directions.

Allen IMO is going to force the issue by saying he will come back in 2025 and play IF his money is guaranteed in the offseason AND he gets a contract extension.

That is going to go a ways toward helping the FO make the decision to let him walk or to trade his rights.

Allen has millions of reasons to take such an approach.

The team has millions of reasons to laugh out loud at such an attempt.

Not really serious, but Devonte Adams straight up for Jonathon Allen (if they would do it might be an interesting short term trade.) Less likely, Nabers straight up for Jonathon Allen. I mean we'd be taking on a guy who can't play because of a concussion and giving them a near pro bowler.

If Newton was healthy and ready to start I think you would see Allen traded.

But this defense has played very poorly so far and Mathis evidently is someone you can’t count on to fill in, despite the camp and preseason praise.

In that way he is like Dyami Brown, another workout and camp warrior who just never seems to translate production on to the field.

The fact Noah Brown came in here and from the first week was ahead of Dyami in re playing time shows you that both he and Zaccheus are replacement level players at best.

Olamide is outperforming Dyami by a long shot. At least he is out there making plays on special teams. Brown contributes nil.

Dyami is like Emmanuel Forbes, the less we see of him the better. Draft position is the only reason they are here.
