Random Commanders Thoughts

I thought both Daniels and Williams would be better in the passing game.

Jayden needs to learn to continue looking for pass when scrambling. Thats how guys like Mahomes often make plays that open games up.

Who was I jawing with in the game day chat week 1 the Bucs were better than the lions? I honestly dont remember because my memory is crap and I’ve slept since then.

But overall, don’t sleep on the Bucs.

The Saints, though, look like they’ve figured things out, so thats going to be a very interesting division. Wonderful we get to play them this year….

That said my other sleeper pick of the season is off to a rough start. I thought the Rams would really rebound this year. Played well in week one then got wrecked today.

Every time I see the old logo it just reminds me how crappy the current one is. 🙁
I’m fine (not really) with losing the name (although I wish they’d picked something better than Commanders 😭) but I do wish they’d bring back the logo and uniform.
We had the best look in the NFL (IMO) and now I think we just look bland.
*sigh*

The stenciled ‘W’ logo is not exactly an original, creative design. It really does look like a college uniform overall.

The W is actually growing on me. It’s not the old logo, of course not, but i don’t think it’s terrible either.

Seibert made his kicks, but the longest one was only 45 yards. We will have to see what kind of player he can be at distance.

But given that Riley Patterson and Cade York couldn't find their butts with both hands, Austin right now is a breath of fresh air.

I've been critical of our run defense, especially on the interior...

Best through two games in the division, giving up almost 5 yards a pop... woof.

and to think... our run defense feels better than our pass defense (not sure if that's true statistically, but it feels true emotionally.)

I think this rush defense has been disappointing, but rushing across the league has been up to start the year. A lot of teams are getting gashed on the ground right now. We will see if this is an actual switch in philosophy, or just an early season trend before the coaches on both sides of the ball adjust.

I’ve seen a lot about how many teams are playing 2 high safeties to take away the big play on the passing game. That obviously means no safety in the box and one less run defender. There are other ways to counter that, but teams seem to be playing defense to try and prevent the big play.

You also have the fact that teams across the league don’t play their starters in preseason. For the passing game, that means less effectiveness as you don’t face real defenses. So offensive coordinators are more likely to run early in the year until the passing game is crisp.

Then on defense, there is no tackling in practice. So if you don’t play in the preseason, your only tackling is against a static tackling dummy that at best will be swayed by a coach. It doesn’t simulate trying to tackle a 210 pound hoss making a cut at full speed. So tackling sucks early on, which means more yards on run plays.

So all of that has led to more running to start the 2024 season. For some teams, I’m sure one of those factors is bigger than others. But all teams have that same problems to overcome. Teams as a whole aren’t playing good run D after 2 weeks.

Kel makes excellent points in his post here. The Training Camp rules changes that have accumulated over the years have watered down the quality of play and have made the game an inferior product to what it was 20 years ago.

I remember Bill Belichick making the comment some years ago that you don't really know who your team is until mid-October because you can't really get them ready in camp anymore.

Just awful mismanagement of the game by the league and the players union.

Watching a little bit of UCLA vs. LSU. UCLA's offense looks pretty good, but they've also given up five sacks in the first half. Gives me flashback sympathy for Sam Howell. At the top of the season last year, we were moving the ball and Howell was looking fine, but the number of sacks and pressures we gave up...
