I think this rush defense has been disappointing, but rushing across the league has been up to start the year. A lot of teams are getting gashed on the ground right now. We will see if this is an actual switch in philosophy, or just an early season trend before the coaches on both sides of the ball adjust.
I’ve seen a lot about how many teams are playing 2 high safeties to take away the big play on the passing game. That obviously means no safety in the box and one less run defender. There are other ways to counter that, but teams seem to be playing defense to try and prevent the big play.
You also have the fact that teams across the league don’t play their starters in preseason. For the passing game, that means less effectiveness as you don’t face real defenses. So offensive coordinators are more likely to run early in the year until the passing game is crisp.
Then on defense, there is no tackling in practice. So if you don’t play in the preseason, your only tackling is against a static tackling dummy that at best will be swayed by a coach. It doesn’t simulate trying to tackle a 210 pound hoss making a cut at full speed. So tackling sucks early on, which means more yards on run plays.
So all of that has led to more running to start the 2024 season. For some teams, I’m sure one of those factors is bigger than others. But all teams have that same problems to overcome. Teams as a whole aren’t playing good run D after 2 weeks.
