Random Commanders Thoughts

So bummed I couldn't get on the game chat yesterday! What a game! I think it's ok to finally start to show some excitement. I'm not saying we are a Super Bowl contender or anything but this is the first time in a long time I believe we can be competitive in our all our games. The defense still has to show me a little more to show they can be decent enough, but I'm buying into this offense. We'll hit a hiccup somewhere I'm sure. However they are bringing it now!

One thing that came to my mind yesterday was the lack of negative plays. Over the years, we'd get some momentum on a drive then there would be a stupid penalty, a bad play call that results in a sack, a turnover, the need to use a time out after confusion, etc. This group is really limiting negative outcomes and when you do that the positives just build upon one another.

That was one of the more entertaining chats ever... we just had to get through the Eeyore 'the sky is falling' onslaught after the opening score by the Cardinals. But after we answered and the 'our defense sucks' chants died down, it was a lot of fun!

There is a part of me that thinks that when the offense faltered the D woke up and realized that they needed to pull their weight. After the punt and especially the interception they really began to play better. It is similar in a way to how after Daniels took that big hit in game two, he stopped looking to run every play and began to play quarterback. I don't know if these were turning points or coincidences, but sometimes a negative play can provoke more propulsive change than a good one.

In the end I think Kyler Murray made plays in the first quarter but Washington finally changed up to a blitzing pressure defense that caused quick throws and inaccuracy in subsequent drives.

Kliff Kingsbury also probably gave Quinn and Whitt some information on Murray and what he likes/doesn't like and we were able to anticipate some things that perhaps the Bills and some earlier opponents of the Cardinals weren't.

The STYLE of the defense, especially in the second half, was much more of what I expected from this coaching staff based on what they said they were going to run.

With a more aggressive style, you may give up the occasional big play down the field, but you also get the chance to get sacks and turnovers.

We ended up with 4 sacks (a season high), Luvu was able to recover the key fumble in the second half and almost had a pick 6 on that pass to the outside.

If we had played this way against Daniel Jones we would have won the Giants game going away.

This young fella is going to be good. He gave up 1 sack to one of the best edges in the league, Trey Hendrickson, but other than that he stoned him.

Thought he had a good preseason.

Yeah, he was one of the only cuts that surprised me. Good for him to get a two year deal.

2 years? Cowboys are getting desperate.

Doesn’t look like some of the luck they had past two years with injuries is continuing into 2024.

I am now, admittedly, suffering from stat fatigue. Except for the main one. 3W-1L.

Good insight on one of the nuances Kliff and the offensive braintrust have installed:

I hate to be a wet blanket, and don’t want to derail other threads or make one dedicated to this but…

I’m a contrarian better. I’m someone who thinks society suffers from recency bias. That society seems to be perpetually inclined to make knee jerk, yet grandiose, opinions when presented with a new situation.

And it cracks me up how some people have gone so totally overboard about Jayden and this team.

It’s one thing to look at the last two games and say wow… to be impressed and excited.

But some stuff I’m seeing or hearing is just over the top projection based on a rookie who’s played 4 games 😆

Just funny to watch.

In part it’s how much better Jayden has looked vs. Williams and the other younger quarterbacks.

The NFL was expecting this type of hype around Caleb and the Bears supposed Greatest Show on Earth supporting cast on offense.

The line against the ravens opened up with Washington as 6.5 point underdogs

Phew that’s crazy to me.

I can see it though. I think our D is pretty suspect still, especially against the run and let’s be honest, Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson pose a huge running challenge. They’re a scary team and we are still unproven.

Their D may also be the first one really practiced in dealing with an offense like ours. They are really similar.

Mind you, my highest hope against the Bengals would that we’d find a we’d find a way to be competitive. Beating Cincinnati and the Browns is a huge step. We knocked out two playoff teams. Yesterday, Arizona beat the 49ers. So maybe we really are a contender.

Right now, I think we have a fun team and a good team. I don’t know that we’ve elevated to the point where we should be acceptted as one of those teams on the highest tier.
