I think it just sucks that a driver says he did it, and that Denny got what he deserved and he gets to keep racing. To me it does not matter that Joey did not know Hamlin was hurt when he said it. You just don't say that, ever.

It makes you wonder how long it will take Denny to be comfortable racing again. I remember when Dale Jr had that wreck (non NASCAR) where there car caught on fire, he may have never said it but I think it took a long time for him to feel right racing again....
 
I missed the race, but the nightly news showed Smoke and Joey having a go at each other, then Smoke having a few choice words to say about Joey's driving ability.
 
Tony is Tony. He is the master at blocking and wrecking others. Joey did nothing wrong in that situation.
 
Denny is on his way home. He was released within the last hour - obviously in a brace. However, he was able to walk out on his own, but don't read too much into it. He still has a ways to go.
 
I think the accident was a result of Joey's inexperience. He lost control when they were racing down the stretch, got loose and caused Denny to get loose...too much for Denny to recover.
 
Just heard some more - he did walk out on his own, but was obviously in a lot of pain. He is also having difficulty breathing.
 
From Denny a short time ago.

"I never felt this before. Really, my first reaction is I felt something pop in my back and that’s why I was really trying to get out of the car as soon as I could because the position I was in … I couldn’t breathe at all. Still having a hard time breathing. When I felt it pop, I couldn’t move at all and I knew I had to get flat to my back to be able to breathe again – so that’s why I rushed out and then just lay flat on the ground to try to start breathing at that point.”

“I knew it wasn’t good because I’d been through so much back stuff before that I know when something is really, really wrong and that was a moment that took two seconds and I knew I was in big trouble.”
 
I wonder if him getting out of the car on his own caused more of an injury?

This sucks for the sport IMO, the only thing good to come from it will be more safer barriers.

Sometimes it takes a serious injury (or worse) to have good things coming from it.

As for Denny, he just indicated a short time ago that the news from visiting with Dr. Petty is not good, but I think all of us knew that already. As for getting out of the car and making it worse, it probably didn't help. He couldn't breathe until he was laying flat or standing straight. I've been talking with one of the nurses at the infield care center for a couple of days and while all of her info is off the record, she never did mention if getting out of the car did more damage.

In all honesty, NASCAR started that path in the 1970s. I saw the differences in how Petty and Pearson battles were handled and stuff like that continues to the present. Take a look at Carl Long - now that is NASCAR idiocy on full display. Yeah, it takes a start and park from the field, but most of those guys are looking for a sponsor to get them over that hurdle.

NASCAR is NASCAR and the only thing consistent about them is their inconsistency. Maybe the next generation of leadership in about thirty years will change for the better, but I won't lose sleep over it.

It is good to hear that Sadler will be back in Cup!

Should Denny even try to come back this year?
 
Now it's official...

Mark Martin will drive the 11 until Denny returns.
 
Word around here (FedEx headquarters is just up the road) is that they wanted the same driver in the car and not a mix until Denny returns. Only realistic option was Mark.

19 years with one team, I think, would indicate some sort of loyalty. Though I'll fully grant that after spending the entirety of that time as a fan of his, I don't feel like I "know" him anymore. Whatever that's worth.
