Official Game Thread - Week 7 2021- Washington @ Green Bay

Only the WFT could make Joe Barry look like a good defensive coach. And only the WFT could manage to not score in consecutive goal to go situations against a defense that is one of the worst red zone defenses in the league.

That being said, the call reversing the TD by Heinicke was total BS. It defies logic that someone reaching for the end zone trying to score a TD is somehow "giving himself up." Nonsense. If that's the way they're going to call it they need to amend the rule.

Matt LeFluer has a very punchable face

That's about how it should have ended. How embarrassing

I thought the playcalling was very good for most of the game. Too many mistakes - by the players - to win. I even liked that we went for it on 4th down repeatedly. On the road against a very good GB team, you have to go for it. Minuse 4 or 5 critical mistakes/failures, this was a competitive game. Just my unpopular opinion.

Say what we will about Joe Barry, but the GB defense was a top 5-7 unit coming into this game. No one has run on them and their passing D is pretty good too. I think the got the Heinicke slide TD call right (per rule), but the follow-up where he reached over the pile, to me that was a touchdown. As far as we know the play was not blown dead and he was on the pile still (and not down) when he extended his arm. I'd like to have heard WHY that was not a TD.

Don't get me wrong guys, obviously - the losing sucks. It's tough to watch week after week. Being somewhat 'in it' against good teams almost makes the failures hurt that much more.

But two things I said on Twitter that I'm feeling today...

I was only subject to what the Red Zone Channel showed, but to have 3 turnovers (2 on downs and 1 INT) on a defense that was 14-14 on the season giving up TDs in the Red Zone is embarrassing. The dive by Heinicke is all on him. First off there was no need to dive, slide, or do anything other than just run into the end zone. Secondly, you need your QB to know the rules and that whether he dives or slides he's considered giving himself up. The QB sneak, I'm still not sure how they called his forward progress stopped when he didn't even have the ball, but they should have never been in that spot.

The second turnover on downs, they should have kicked the FG. On that possession, you had the Gibson fumble and then a pass that hit McLaurin right in the facemask in the end zone (I think that's where it hit, but either way he did not catch it). It was also the 3rd quarter and you are down 14. So a FG there could potentially mean a FG and TD+2 to tie instead of 2 TDs. I just didn't like the decision to go for it in that spot.

The INT seems to be something Henicke has struggled with lately. When he is throwing deep to his right, he seems to leave the pass short. He did it against NO down the sideline where he underthrew it and he did it again. I'm wondering if this is a practice issue where he is used to making those throws without a defense. But this may be something the coaches need to work on. Perhaps I'm reading into it too much, but that seems to be a pass he struggles making.

We said it last week and it's the same this week. When you are playing good teams (probably true against bad teams too) you can't keep making mistakes and expect to win. Especially when you are in the red zone.

No argument with most of that. The McLaurin drop hit him in the chest, a little high, but no excuse for not getting that one. The one Heinicke interception he just flat out threw up for grabs - no excuse for throwing that ball. On going for it repeatedly on 4th down, I think the coaches are viewing it this way: We are a 2-4 team on the road against a team with a very good defense, we may not get down here this close again, no one expects us to win this game, we might as well be aggressive and see what we can do. It didn't work out, but I'm not sure I believe we win the game kicking FGs with a brand new kicker there either. I can see the argument on both sides of that decision.

Thanks for correcting me on that pass to McLaurin. I only saw it once and I just knew it should have been caught. I like going for it when you can seize momentum or change the game. I just think in that spot, after failing on the last one, that you take the points and keep yourself in the game.

It hit him right in the clavicle and bounced off. It's a tough catch, but in the NFL you have to haul that one in. I hear you on the 4th down calls. It's tough to know in those spots. Often times, what works is deemed 'genius'. If he goes for the kick in that spot and the brand new kicker misses, we are calling for his head too.

On any other day, McLaurin makes that catch and Heinickie goes into the end zone. I'm bummed but not crushed like last week.

This might have been the most complete game the team has played this season.

Danny Johnson was a bright spot today.

Thought the Dline played well.

Thought Heinicke was robbed twice....I have never in my life seen a player dive head first, untouched, and have it classified as giving himself up.

The other bad call was the non call on Seals Jones in the endzone, the Packer player had his arm around his waist, that's always been PI. Not today apparently.

And as much as a majority of this fanbase hates to hear this and vehemently disagrees, Heinicke's a rookie. Seven starts and he'
s getting OJT. He'll learn from today.

Yeah - we didn't get a ton of help from the officials (although they did call a phantom call or two on the Packers as well). Folks are way too hard on Heinicke. It's true he had some plays that arguably cost us the game. It's also true he made some plays that gave us a chance.

One the most competitive games this season IMO. The D showed signs of life, and we had a few good stops. We moved the ball well today. I'm not extremely concerned about the Red Zone issues, they should fix themselves once injured players return. Loosing Thomas was bigger then many of us thought. Hoping Gibson loosing snaps to JD late in the game gets the ball security message across. The endzone pic hurt, but the way Heinicke responds when he does mess up is why I'd have no problem going into next season with him as the starter. He's a gamer, and never seems to quit, and raises the energy level of the entire team. With the number of starters missing on both sides of the ball, it's amazing we didn't get completely blown out.

It was certainly more competitive than the score indicates. I know it enrages some to say that - because it is only the score that counts in the end. But it's still true. Overall they battled.

Seems like the D suddenly became just a bit more competent with Collins demoted and Jackson out. It's still bad but it wasn't the usually "big wide open bomb" that we gave Jameis.

Unfortunate that Heinicke gave himself up before punching in the score.

Play-wise, this game felt better like they've moved a baby step forward, although major issues remain, like Gibson's untimely butterfingers, the Dline chasing contract incentives instead of rushing as a unit, and the linebackers simply not good enough.
