Official Game Thread - Week 13 - Commanders @ Giants

But Mike, both those guys have been gone so long, who really gives a shit?

I'd rather have Robinson and Gibson and do without the headache that is Trent Williams.....you know, the guy who chose to smoke pot over helping his team in the midst of a playoff run?

Those guys are water under the bridge.......

No one even remembered Perine until a couple weeks ago and now he’s a HOFer Jay Gruden ruined? Come on guys … let’s not totally lose our shit here…
wasn't pining for Perine...he's old news. God Bless him for finding a career this late.

I do. It shows a record of bad choices. We could have kept Trent and used any draft pick for OL or free agent oversigning for someone else.

It does matter.

As a physician, I'm ashamed and embarrassed that a "professional" medical staff allowed a player under their "care" to have a cancerous lesion on his head for an extended period of time, treated it as some sort of minor injury, and failed to obtain a subspecialist opinion on it. The staff failed Trent in the most fundamental way possible, and it matters not if Trent was a Pro Bowler or the last guy on the roster; this simply shouldn't have happened. To anyone. Just another one of the many inconceivable events surrounding this team during the Snyder tenure.

Special Teams took a hit this week.

Our gunners were nowhere near as good. Christian Holmes wasn’t on teams I don’t believe because he played corner and had a rough game. He has been very good on teams. Not sure if Butler was in the game. I’ve been used to seen Holmes and Butler bearing down on punt returners in games past. Getting St-Juste back will allow them to put Holmes back on teams.

Slye missing that kick hurt but so did the sack on 3rd down. Can’t have that happen. Imo that is a lot on Turner.

Then we have the Antonio Gibson play. That needs to be coached up. Can’t allow that ball to drop.

Someone will probably ask Ron if they have considered putting Jahan in on punt returns. Maybe that is something we see over the next few games. Who knows. I know his health is crucial for the offense.

I know we had at least one block in the back too. I think we had two or three. We were losing the field position battle. Thank goodness we can run well when backed up.

No matter what though, we have Tress!

Trent Williams leaving is all on Washington, but Perine? Meh.

In four years with Cincinnati this was his third start and first 100 yard game. The guy is a career backup. Good for him for having a good day but, honestly, who gives a crap?

As I said before...I do. Most people will understand that losing a player who still produces for no good reason shows a bad tendency. If you want to just lock in on the name Perrine, cool. Go for it.

But, it shows the team doesn't value people and we've lost way too many players who still contribute to teams winning to just ignore it.

Alfred Morris
Breeland
Lorenzo Alexander

Those are just three off the top of my head we should have kept in house.

We need some context to really support that argument, don't we Mike? I think fans of most NFL teams could come up with a similar handful of players their team let go that in hindsight they think they should have kept?

What context would you like? I'm being serious.

I've listed names and contributions I thought did and just got shit on for it. What other context should I provide to everyone?

The mistake for Washington was not letting Trent Williams and Kirk Cousins go.

The mistake was not getting full value for them when trades were on the table that would have provided this team with good draft choices to build for the future.

For years Belichick was able to trade good players entering contract years or wanting to max deals for high picks and manage his cap so NE could remain contenders.

Reid does the same thing. When you have a cap you have to have a budget and that includes making plans to give up certain players whose asking price is too high and/or simply outside the team framework.

Getting a compensatory #3 pick for Cousins and another #3 for Trent Williams was SO SHORT of what a good GM would have gotten for them.

Samaje Perine?

He runs for 350-400 yards a year for Cincinnati, perfect role for him on an offense with a pro bowl quarterback, feature back in Mixon and all-pro receiver in Ja'Marr Chase.

Does anyone think he would be a better fit here right now than Robinson Jr. or Gibson?

He is older, slower and more limited in what he brings to the table.

In most cases you credit the offensive line with a running back's production but I think Washington has a rare ruby in Brian Robinson Jr. He has a rare combination of size, quickness and outright speed to the outside.

In this case I think he makes the offensive line looks better.

Just saying that if your argument is the team doesn't value talent or people---is that a fair read on your comment above?---my question is, compared to what standard? Again, I think fans of any NFL team could make the same argument by going back over several years and finding a handful of guys their team let go, for whatever reasons, that went on to have some success elsewhere.

Not a hill I'm interested in dying on, brother. Just throwing out a perspective.

But that can be said of almost any team.

Chandler Jones had very productive seasons after leaving New England during their glory days. In retrospect, an argument can be made that Belichick needed to cut other veterans to commit dollars to Jones as a top pass rusher given how he has performed.

The Jags let Fournette go and he helped the Bucs win the Super Bowl and remain productive after that. What did the Jags have in the backfield to replace him with? Who is their running back now? Off the top of my head, I can't name him. I would have to look up the box score from yesterday's game.

How about the Dolphins giving up on Tannehill and him going on to take the Titans to multiple playoff appearances and 10+ win seasons while Miami remained a morass with Ryan Fitzpatrick and other denizens of the deep at quarterback for years?

I think the important message here is that as a good GM you need to not only evaluate and draft talent but also able to make trades and free agent moves that represent value for the organization.

We have very good talent at a lot of positions, and a lot of it young talent. We are a QB, LB or two, Corner, and couple OL away from being a serious threat in the playoffs.

This is the most talented team Washington has fielded in recent memory. Seems like an odd time to resurrect the 'we suck because we let all our talent walk' debate.

The reality is, right now (as it is for a lot of NFL teams) our biggest problem is injuries. We have St. Juste and Holcomb yesterday, I think we win that one.

We will see in two weeks :eclipsee-victoria:

Boone, I would go one or two steps FEWER and say that Washington is a top 12 quarterback alone away from being not only a solid playoff team but a challenger to Dallas, Minnesota and the Eagles in the NFC.

McLaurin and Dotson as wideouts, Samuel as a hybrid, Gibson/Robinson in the backfield - that's VERY good talent at the skill positions.

We could use a do-it-all tight end, but a very good quarterback as we saw with Dak last night can get a guy like Dalton Schultz to elevate and become a significant contributor to the offense.

The offensive line needs improvement but for a season like this with injuries and some vet fill-ins that are likely gone in 2023, a very good starting quarteback can still make hay while the sun shines with this offense IMO.

The defense is a playoff defense. It is not a top 3 defense because we still don't have a consistently dominant set of lockdown corners although this group is improving and we also don't have enough at linebacker IMO.

If Jamin Davis keeps coming on and lives up to his athletic ceiling he can elevate this group but we still need IMO two other linebackers who can contribute.

burgold .....just opened the thread. Best wishes for Mom's speedy recovery and well-being!

Anyone have a Rock Cartwright update? Blondie?
Good Lord, is she still around?
She was a regular fixture on ES....for whatever reason, people treated her with kid gloves, like she was royalty or something.
I met her at a tailgate, years ago, and refused to kiss her ring.
Then, I blamed a loss on Cartwright, after he fumbled a game away, and she went nuts on me on the board
But....to keep in OT.....one missed FG and a horrific pick-up of that PI flag helped doom us in the end.
Ties suck, but at least we didn't travel all the way to London to witness it.

LOL I actually remember that ...

Logan Thomas really disappointed me yesterday. I expect better from a guy with his level of experience.

Logan Thomas has never shown the same explosiveness after the ACL.

At 31 the question is whether he is ever going to regain his ability to gain separation and become a down the field option.
