Maryland Men’s Basketball

Unable to watch again today, as I was traveling. I did listen to most of the game while I was on the road, and I’ll watch the replay tomorrow morning. Was really glad to hear Juju having a big game on Senior Day! Hope he kicks on for his last few games in a Maryland jersey, could help them make a good run in either, or both, tourneys.

Wisconsin getting upset was pretty big also. I believe that if MSU beats Michigan tomorrow, Maryland will be the #2 seed in the B1G tournament. I also think that if they win at least one game in the B1G, they’ll be no worse than a #4 seed in the Big Dance. If they win a couple, and get to the final, they could possibly get a #3 seed.

Great season for these guys, especially Reese, Geronimo, and the other seniors. Also a big season for Willard, who will match his highest win total with one more. He won 25 with Seton Hall a few years back, when they won the Big East. If Maryland can continue to bring in NIL money, and with the amount of talent in the DMV, I’m hoping Willard can make Maryland a national power, like in the Gary years.

I was working and record all the games. I was planning on watching it when I got home and then discovered it's on Peacock. This new wave really pisses me off, now I miss my team playing and that was never the case before.

Yeah, I was out all day helping a family we know. But even if I was home, I couldn't have watched it anyway. The B1G has one from being one of the first conference to show every game to being one that is making you pay to watch.

I know the NFL started this mess and it's only getting worse from that perspective. But the thing that made the NFL so great was eyes on the product. Everyone got to watch NFL games. You could pay extra to get more, but you could always see your local team. These other leagues, including college, that are making it difficult to watch your own local team is just nonsense. They are just making it so less people watch, which ultimately diminishes interest in the product.

First game I intentioanally missed was the Chiefs/Bills playoff game a year ago that was on an app, not sure which. I refused to subscribe and hope they lost their ass but I know better. If fans push back and don't subscribe to the channel that is the only way to stop this trend.

Yeah, for the NFL and most likely these NCAA conferences, it's still a money maker. So in the short term, they win. What happens if the NFL starts going the direction of the NBA and all you hear are fan complaints? What if it goes the way of MLB where people just don't want to tune in very often. What about the NHL which has still never recovered from the long strike in the early 2000s? These leagues, including colleges, make these deals thinking only about the money they will get right now. I guess many of them don't care what happens in the future, as long as it doesn't affect them in the immediate future. The streaming model has changed drastically in the last several years and it's becoming more and more expensive and the sports leagues are getting their piece of the pie making it more difficult for the fans along the way.

Has there been a lot of pushback from the fans? I get why the NFL took the big check, it's up to the fans to show that we don't want to have to pay for an app by not subscribing and voicing our opion. If the apps keep writing the checks the leagues will cash them. We need to make sure the apps lose money on the deal by not subscribing so they won't be motivated to keep stealing our games. I do my part.

I don't know. I hear talk radio mostly complaining, but I'm guessing people write that off as old men complaining to get things back to the good old days. I won't subscribe just to watch a game. I have some streaming and that's what I had. If a game I want to watch is on that service, I'll watch. But I won't subscribe just to watch. Because that will only get worse.

Me too. But I must explain I watch every single game on DVR delay. I'll start the Commanders game a little after 2:00 so I can fast forward. Watching commercials on live games is absolute torture for me after so many years of watching on delay.

No offense intended, but a discussion on streaming services could probably be its own thread. I actually think it is a worthy topic!

WOW! That half could not have gone much better!

Outside of Reese and Queen picking up 2 fouls each, it was near perfect. Rice shooting lights out; Gillespie playing aggressive and smart; Ivisic , who didn’t play first game, with three fouls; and, hello Jordan Geronimo! Nice to see you tonight!

25 point halftime lead with zero turnovers. To think that I was a little apprehensive about playing Illinois, but the guys have come ready to go.

Fear the Turtle!

Great way to start the tournament. And they got to rest the starters the last 8 minutes. Fantastic job tonight. Now to get ready for Michigan or Purdue.

That was complete destruction. Jordan Geronimo brings so much energy and hustle off the bench, he has changed the last few weeks getting opportunities.

Rodney Rice wow. What a shooter. Gonna need that type of effort tomorrow against Purdue or Michigan.

88 points and 3 turnover. They can't play any better, good time of the year to be peaking. From the start Illinois was afraid of our bigs. Seemed like they were altering their shot when they got inside, at times it was not even necessary. Rice was Steph Curry and they just dominated from start to finish. Only reason they did not hang up 100 was coach showed class and took his foot off the gas pedal.

Am I going to Hell for backing up that kid in the Illinois hat crying 3-4 times and laughing my ass off? Fuck it, it was worth it. I wasn't aware that I behaved differently than when I watch with the wife upstairs. She is out of town and I know I screamed things last night that should not be coming out of a 66 year old man's mouth. But boy that was the most fun I've had watching a MD game in a long time.

I watched recently a YouTube recast of the Detroit game hosted by one of their fans. There is an evil joy to watching them lose it even though several times I nodded and saw myself in him as their team just got smashed.

To this date, that is still the greatest sporting event I ever attended. Yes, it’s extra special because MD won. But there was nothing like the 9 team ACC tournament. It was an amazing experience and seeing MD cut down the nets was just awesome.

I was lucky enough to get really good comped tickets to the 2003 Final Four in New Orleans.

Syracuse with Carmelo and Hakim Warrick, Kansas with Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich, Texas with TJ Ford and Brandon Mouton, and of course Marquette with D Wade.

Pretty solid Head Coaches with Boeheim, Roy Williams, Rick Barnes and Tom Crean.

The Friday night before the 1st game on Bourbon St., will all 4 fan bases in full force, is an experience I will never forget. Just a crush of humanity.

I have never once traveled to see a game, wife was never into sports and I never felt motivated enough to gather a group. But I sure think it would be fun to put a vacation around a game or 2.
