Maryland Men’s Basketball

Wow! My old heart can’t take that shit!

Queen has put this team on his back, and will take them as far as he can. Freshman stud!

CSU is a good team, and played well. Made a lot of big shots. They run some great sets, and I expect Niko Medved to be getting a big time gig in the near future. They were also very physical, especially with Maryland’s bigs, and the refs let a lot go. Terps had zero foul shots in the first half. I haven’t checked, but I’d guess that did not happen in any other game this year.

Gillespie had another mediocre game, and hasn’t had a really big game in a while now. Somebody get him a Red Bull! Reese put up a double-double, but had stretches where he seems to disappear again. Made some plays, and hit some free throws down the stretch though!

Florida game should be a fun watch. Both teams like to get up and down the floor, and pour the points in. It’ll be Maryland’s starting 5 against, probably, the deepest team in the NCAA.

First Sweet 16 in 9 years…second in 22. That’s a big accomplishment, and I’m overjoyed for the guys!

First off, Queen is that dude. I was worried out of the timeout, it was going to be Gillespie pretending to drive and jacking up a 3. I'm glad they just gave it to Queen and let him work. He clearly has the skills to make a really tough shot like that. I wish he had taken the game over a little more. I was surprised when they said he only had 17 points. His impact on the game seemed much bigger than that even before the last shot.

Having said that, Colorado St just played like they wanted it more all game. They played harder, they hustled more, and they ran better sets than Maryland all game. Their defense and strategy was great as well. I think Maryland was fortunate to come away with a win (man I sound like a coach saying that), but they won and that's all that matters in March.

Willard needs to be more attentive during the games though. How could he not know that Geronimo was elbowed in the head? He was laying on the ground for more than a moment. He was clearly in pain. Not only did Willard not ask him what happened, but he then left him in the game as if nothing happened. That was a vicious elbow to the head that he took. I understand the refs can't see everything (most of the game they couldn't see anything), but camera's see all. And coaches can ask for a review on a play. That would have certainly been an F1 and possibly an F2 as Gene explained if it was reviewed. Poor job by the refs on the floor and the alternate official, but Willard needs to tell the refs his player was elbowed in the head. If he doesn't know, then he needs to ask his players. I saw Geronimo making the elbow gesture, so he was trying to tell someone. Then later in the game, Harris-Smith hurts his hand after a shot. He played defense holding his hand, clearly in pain. The refs won't stop the game for injury when you are on defense, but once Maryland got the ball, Willard could have told the refs his guy was hurt and they would have stopped the game. Instead, he let's them play basically 4 on 5 that possession since Harris-Smith couldn't shoot because of his hand. I can't remember why the game stopped, but it was a TV timeout and he went over to the bench still clearly in pain. I don't think he came back in the game after that. But again, why is the coach not attentive to his player being injured?

Enough complaining from me. Maryland was the one able to hit the big shot today and I am ecstatic about that. Now they get to play with house money against Florida on Thursday, who also looked a bit shaky for most of their game today.

Yes, missing that elbow to Geronimo's head was egregious. Shame on the refs for missing that, and I agree Willard and the rest of the staff need to catch it and bring it to the refs' attention. There were a couple other fouls on MD that I felt the refs missed. Thankfully it was a moot point.

Really need the guards to play better, I feel like this team rises and falls with Gillespie and Rice. They picked it up in the second half - Gillespie forced a key turnover in the backcourt and also hit a big 3 in the final few minutes.

Too many offensive rebounds too, particularly to a small team like Colorado State. Some were long rebounds that are hard to really gauge, but guys need to crash the boards. I feel that rebounds are mostly about who wants it most.

The refs failed to blow the whislte the entire game, until the end. How often does a team go to a freshman big with 3 seconds? That play almost always goes to a wing, I was convinced it was going to be Gilespie. We all wanted them to go inside but for much of the game Reese was not calling for the ball or was not converting down low. But his 2 free throws were huge.

On their final 3 that was the design out of the huddle. Clifford was looking for Lake right after he got the ball. This Maryland team does not play defense like Terps teams in the past. I have no idea how a team with this size keeps getting outrebounded. But I swear so many loose balls last night just seemed to bounce to guys in green. It was an uphill battle all night, one I didn't think they would win. Until they did, just a great great shot that will be remembered for a long time.

Niko Medved takes the Minnesota job. That didn’t take long.

Girls win in double OT. Helluva game! Girl for Bama dropped 45 in a loss. Terp girls get to face South Carolina now. Probably get thrashed, but another Sweet 16 for Brenda.

Yeah I watched the whole thing at Green Turtle. Sat in a booth by myself for three friggin' hours. That Barker woman can play some ball

Like lacrosse I usually don't watch the Lady Terps unless they get to the Final Four, which happens a lot. But I do keep track of them and was happy to see that. Not happy to learn the star for USC blew out her knee.

As for the men Gilespie and Rice have been off since the Illinois game. When they are hitting their shots this team can put on a show, as we have seen. Rice has got to get off to better starts and Gilespie just needs to start making shots he has made all season. They are due to get hot and if they are Maryland can play with anyone.

I thought Rice played well against CSU. Gillespie, though, has been a bit off the boil lately. That is what makes this team so good. Any of their starting five can drop 25 or more, any night. When one or two are off, the others can pick them up, and the team rolls on.

Florida is a really good team. I’ve got them going to the championship game in my bracket. They have size, athleticism, talent, and go 9-10 players deep. I don’t expect Maryland to win, but on their day, they CAN play with anyone. Let’s hope they’ll all be bringing their A game Thursday night!

Interestingly, the Washington Post graced the front page of this morning's newspaper with a large photo of the Maryland women winning the game last night. Above the fold! They did not do the same for the Maryland men the day before.

Rice has started several recent games slowly, this has contributed to them falling behind early. They could overcome this against a team like Colorado State. Against a team like Florida that could me a 18-5 hole that is too large to overcome.

Have we ever seen Derik Queen dunk? I miss the days of Laron Profit, Dez Wells, and the King of them all Steve Francis. Guys who threw down very exciting hammer dunks. Seems we don't dunk like we used to.

Queen has dunked plenty. He’s not flashy about it though, usually just a straight 2-handed dunk, grab the ball on the way down, and place it on the floor. I’m more than fine with that. You don’t see many of those dunks blocked, or missed.

Gapare is the guy for the highlight reel dunk. He threw down a few early this season, but just hasn’t been able to get much time after coming back from being really sick, about a month, month and a half ago.

Maryland been way too soft on the rebounding in the first half. If they can buckle down around the rim they should be getting more second chance opportunities in the second half. Hard game to predict at this point because neither team seemed to be playing their best ball in the first half.

Yikes. Maryland is likely toast. They are just out hustled and can't come down with rebounds that are in their hands. How many times are we going to see 3 Terps jerseys surrounding a single Gator jersey and the Gators come away with the ball......Also there is no effort to get the ball to Reese or look for mismatches. They look lost.
