Maryland Men’s Basketball

Yeah, they had a few chances to take control of the game and some bad offensive possessions got Michigan on a run. A lot of back and forth that half. We will see if the next time MD makes a run, can they take control or will it continue the back and forth.

These are two very good teams, playing a very good game. Whatever happens, both teams should hold their heads high.

Pathetic. Terps didn't deserve to win that honestly. Gillespie and Rice fell flat on their face. And getting abused under the basket is not Maryland basketball.

Gonna need to make the Sweet 16 minimum to salvage the season.

Tough way to lose, but Raftery said it before the play. You cannot let him get the ball back. And if he does get it, it can’t be with a head of steam going to the basket. Great job by Donaldson, but a poor job by MD to not even slow him down. That’s all you need to do there. Slow him down or make him give it up.

Also, their last 4 losses were absolutely heartbreakers.

Buzzer beat @NW
Banked in 3 pointer with 9 seconds @Ohio St
Beyond half court heave by Michigan St
Coast to coast in 5 seconds by Michigan

Yeah, said to the wife that I didn’t want Queen to get fouled, because I want the chance to win it at the end. Tough loss, but they came back from almost getting blown out, and lose at the end…again. All 8 of their losses by 6 points or less. I think they’re still no worse than a 4 seed, just hope they get a good bracket.

I agree. The foul was a good thing for Michigan. I don't know if MD scores on that possession to win, but the foul guaranteed that no matter what happened, Michigan was going to get the ball back. It really worked out in their favor. But in the end, you have to make the plays to win the game and Michigan did and Maryland didn't.

It was horrible defense plain and simple. Rice and Gillespie got burned and then Reese just stood there as Donaldson zoomed by. Queen at least got in the way and challenged it a bit.

Only missed four free throws but those hurt in games like this. I thought our poor defense hurt the most, we haven't given up 81 in a game since at Oregon in January. Rice played badly. I suppose it was a good effort but honestly really disappointed I thought we had a great chance to make the championship game. Getting outrebounded by that much is shocking.

I said the same thing to my wife. I was concerned it was too early even if he did make them both. But I didn't actually expect Michigan to get a layup. So thankful this was not the game that matters. Interesting stat on their last 4 losses, kind of the opposite of the Commanders season but also shows they may be better than their record which is pretty damned good.

The cold shooting to start was entirely predictable, after a game like Illinois it was easy to see a big drop off the next game. Those 2 bigs for Michigan are really good but I still don't understand the rebounding discrepancy. Love seeing Gerenimo getting the minutes he deserves, always liked that guy's energy, effort and production in his role.

ACC Rookie of the Year
ACC Player of the Year
First Team All American
Naismith Player of the Year
AP Player of the Year
First Overall Pick in the NBA Draft.

Nobody has a resume like this, even John Lucas or Len Bias. A good argument can be made that Joe Smith was the greatest player in Maryland Basketball History. Yet nobody talks about him very much which I always thought was unfair.

His freshman year was amazing, then he backed it up with player of the year as a sophomore. I think the fact that he had a long, but not stellar, NBA career, lessens his impact. He was a very good player, all star a couple of times, played forever, it seemed, but got traded many times, and was never thought of as one of the NBA’s best during his career. Good dude by all accounts.

That's my conclussion as well. Let's face it, as the first pick he was a bust, which surprised me. Lucas was a good pro and Lenny never got the opportunity. Michael Jordan's college career is overblown because he turned into the greatest player of all time in the NBA.

Complete domination, Grand Canyon didn't have the size or athleticism to compete. Will be favored against Colorado State, can't take anything for granted.

Agree. Good win to start. They need to follow that up against Colorado St.

Very nice. Did what they needed to do against inferior competition. CSU will be a tougher out, but if they play their game, should take care of business. I’d love to see a Florida-Maryland Sweet 16 matchup, that has a chance to be a helluva game.

BTW, Derik Queen is a beast!

Also…B1G undefeated in the guy’s tournament…girls are 4-1 so far.

That was a statement game. I so wanted them to hold GCU to 49, people notice 81-49 more than 81-52. They really do have a complete team, just wish Rice was not so streaky. Happy for DHS for his one shining moment before he moves to the level more appropriate for him. I wish Gapare would see at least a few minutes of actually game time, I'm glad to see Geromino is getting more minutes. Jay Young never seems to make any productive plays.

I was rooting for Colorado State in the opener before I realized we would be playing that winner. I like that matchup, we will again have a size advantage. I'll sure miss Derek Queen but am enjoying the ride.

B1G just went 8-0 in the first round of the tournament. I think that shows just how deep this conference is this year, and is an indictment against the selection committee choosing UNC over a far more worthy Indiana. ACC has literally ONE team left in the tournament. Basketball conference…HA! Couldn’t happen to a better bunch of snobby assholes!

I'm really enjoying this. On the Maryland board I got a lot of flack for posting the BIG does not seem as strong this year. I made the comment by saying Maryland, who nobody saw as a Final Four contender a few weeks ago, could play with the top teams in the league. So to me i didn't see any really good teams at the top of the BIG as we usually see.

I'll be more than happy to be wrong, I always root for the teams in our league. Does Maryland get more money if a BIG team reaches the Elight Eight, Final Four or Championship Game?

In a word, yes, the conference gets money for games won in the tournament. I believe it is then doled out to each member school on a sliding basis for how well each school did in the year.
