How the hell is Haslett still here?

Actually he did. Its another round of nepotism just like it always has been in Redskinsland for how long?

I'm just waiting to see if he fires him after a few of those patented blown 2nd half leads or if he just feels bad for him after his offense fails to put up points on occasion like Shanahan did.

Yeah, this move had me scratching my head. The only thing I can think that makes it a positive is that maybe they ARE getting better, but Shanny refused to play them. Or perhaps Shanny's drafting was the problem; garbage in, garbage out as computer programmers like to say...

Perhaps the reason LeRibeus and the other draft pick OL haven't emerged is that they lack NFL talent?

Foerster may have been given lemons to work with.

The Redskins can run a 3-4 if they get the talent to make it work.

Maybe Gruden is willing to allocate the picks and FA dollars to get that done.

You start with the nose.

Cofield is too small to play NT for. 16 weeks.

If as Cooley suggested the team is going to move the 330 pound Baker inside perhaps the team is closer to solving the puzzle starting from within.

I'm willing to give Gruden the benefit of doubt for the time being on his assistant coach/coordinator choices. I can't imagine just how big a job it must be to come in new to a team and have to completely reshape that club overnight. I have a feeling that in order to hit the ground running he's picking his battles in an attempt to make us more competitive as quickly as possible.

That being said....do I feel that keeping Haslett was a good call? No, I don't. Am I willing to give him one season which he's under contract for anyway) to prove that he can put a quality scheme together? Yeah. But only one. If Gruden can get the offense (RGIII in particular) living more up to it's potential, then the defensive issues will be mitigated. The biggest issue I had this past season was, in my mind, the mis-use of the players at hand in the scheme. But at the end of the day, I also realized that while yes, I would consider myself to be a somewhat knowledgeable fan, there's a SHIT TON more to it than just what I was looking at and thinking. As such, I'm willing to see how this goes. I'm not sure that I expect to see any major improvement on the defensive side, but maybe with an influx of new talent and with Haslett's newfound freedom of expression as it were, I'll be proven wrong.

Gruden is no Zorn. Let's give him a chance.....
 
I dislike the meme that " we arent NFL coaches" its NFL coaches who have presided over the decline of our team , just sayin. some fans are actually extremely knowledgeable, its actually an indictment of some of these guys that with the detailed scouting reports, the information they have that they are not right more often while an old fat guy on a couch a thousand miles away gets it right far more often. just sayin
 
It's so easy to play armchair quarterback. I admit I do it all the time. You're actually 100% correct in that there are some REALLY knowledgable fans out there....and, I'll even include myself in that category. I watch tendencies...I can identify trends and patterns....and yes, I can often predict a play or outcome during the course of a game. I can't tell you how many times I'll call something out or comment on what either is about to happen or has just happened - only to hear the commentators say in some cases the exact thing I'd just said in literally the exact same words. All of which - as you say - serves to compound my frustration level knowing that the buffoons who are ACTUALLY running the team have such vast amounts of resources at their fingertips....while at most....I have a cocktail at mine.

But the thing is, none of that means that I can run a football team. Least of all, successfully. It's so easy to be a know-it-all. But it's not nearly so easy to know that you don't know it all. I profess that I don't.

This concerns me. It is exactly what Shanahan tried to do when he got here. I don't care if we're 3-13 again next year (gives us a shot at Famous Jameis :laugh: j/k). But I would rather us struggle through a a year or two as long as their is continued improvement over the next few years.

What I don't want to see, is to try win immediately while mortgaging the future like Shanahan did by giving away draft picks for older and oft injured players.
 
To begin with, I think having a bar on the sideline could actually be a good idea.....sort of like a golf course drink cart. Might inspire an entirely new level of creativity!!

Here's the thing....no, I am not happy to have Haslett back, but unfortunately, Bruce Allen didn't call for my opinion on the matter. He's back. I have no problem with Gruden focusing more on the offensive side of the ball because that's his particular area of expertise.....and because the face of the franchise - RGIII - runs the offense and seems to many to be the cog that will run this wheel. That's not to say that Gruden doesn't know defense. I think he'd have to know it quite well in order to devise a plan to attack it. Just because he's running the offense in particular, he's still the head coach and every area of the team (offense, defense, special teams, personnel) now fall under his responsibility. But, leaving an experienced coach (Haz) to run the other side is a smart call....and if Haslett responds with a solid defense this year he'll look like a genius. If not, a change will be made and nobody would fault him.

I'm not saying that anybody should sell the farm to win right away...and, keeping Haslett simply in an effort to give yourself a better chance right away would be counterproductive. The win-now at all costs philosophy doesn't work....we saw that with the Shanahans and McNabb. Elephant....I'd also be okay with seeing a sub-500 season next year....but what I would HAVE to see in order to stay patient would be Gruden running the club in a responsible and well thought-out manner. I want to see smart men making smart and inspired decisions that may not always bring immediate dividends, but would show us that they're proactively addressing the holes we so obviously have on this team. I also want to see them do a better job matching personnel to schemes...whether it's the 3-4 or the 4-3...whatever.....just put the players in a position to succeed and not fail. Something I never felt the Shanahans pulled off.

OldFan.....I gotta say.....I typically am drawn to your posts because I feel that they often come in from seemingly out of nowhere bringing a new perspective.....and, more importantly, a solid and well thought out perspective at that. More often right than wrong. Your last post, though.....I have to admit....I was a little lost. Read it a couple times, too. I kinda dig all that hammer of God stuff, but you just lost me on this one. With all due respect...

By the way, just how old are you? I keep imagining this really old, frail grandpa....but then I realized just how old I'm getting and how long I've been a Redskin fan. In truth, you're probably not much older than I am. Just curious.....you don't have to answer if you don't want.
 
LSF, we agree on most of this, but the decsion to keep Haslett just doesn't seem well thought out nor responsible. But what do I know? I am just a fan. I just can't find any comfort in the decision to keep him, no matter how much anyone tries to convince me. I won't say it's a disaster, we'll have to see how it pans out. I just don't feel good about it and nothing said will change that...only performance on the field will.
 
Yeah, El, I'm with ya on all this....really, I am. I was ASTONISHED that Haslett wasn't the first name called when we started hearing about the different coaches being released. His record prior to coming here was crap (Om outlined that very thoroughly at that time) and I've really seen nothing in his tenure here to make me feel like he's learning any new tricks. I felt that he spent most of the time here under the Shanahans trying over and over to cram square pegs into round holes - not taking advantage of players' particular skill sets and never seemed to adept and putting any of em in a position to succeed. Even an armchair quarterback with a scotch in his hand like me can see that dropping Rak into pass coverage on a regular basis is not smart coaching. We run a 3-4....but in my mind we really don't have the personnel for it.

But, the thing is....he's here and there isn't anything you or I can do about it. Sooooo, I'm resigning myself to trying to justify his existence and am holding out hope that maybe - just maybe - with the right guy directing him and allowing him autonomy he perhaps (we're let to believe) didn't have before.....along with a solid draft, an intelligent hand in free agency and the money and smarts overall to bring in a deep, fresh crop of talent (on both sides of the ball) - maybe he gets the defense to improve....and prove us all wrong. I'm not ever gonna stop pulling for this team.....with or without Haslett.......so, I'm stuck. I'm going to see it for what it is....and I'm gonna do a lot of drinking and praying.
 
Hope's all I got LSF...I just won't try to convince myself the move is anything other than what I fear it is. I can't. As a fan of this team I just feel, beaten...
 
What was the point of dumping Shanahan and half the coaching staff if theres no hope it'll result in a turnaround? What's the point of even being a fan or following a team if we cant muster anything but skepticism, fear, and dire predictions?

Not directed at any one person. Just a couple questions.

I'm tired of the gloom and doom. I choose to believe things can improve and that its a new day with a new coaching era.

I'm not referring to our members, but I believe a good portion of the interest around the Redskins is akin to slowing down on the highway to see a car crash.

Certainly people haven't been watching to see good football. Or even the strong possibility that there might be good football.

With a portion of hockey fans, it's for the fights. For a portion of racing fans, it's for the potential of a wreck. Some tune in to see if a high wire walker will fall to his death.

For a portion of Skins fans it's for the drama. And it may not even be a conscious decision for this group. For the chance of another leak right before a game. For the chance to see something so absolutely stupid, that it's entertaining. To see if the Skins can possibly do anything more embarrassing this year, than they did last year.

We've become a male soap opera. Days Of Our Skins. How The Shanny's Turn. Honey Boo Boo meets professional sports.

Well, as sure as I was that Garcon would become the greatest WR we've had in 15 years, I am even more confident in Jay Gruden.

That portion of the fan base--the ones looking for that crazy wreck--they may want to change the channel. The circus has ended here. Jay Gruden's about to kick some ass.

Not sure if you're addressing what I was saying or not, but like I said, all I can do is hope. Hopes all I got. There are however levels of hope. When we retain a coach like Haslett, that keeps my hope levels low. Had we brought in Wade Phillips I would have more hope. Had we switched to 4-3 and lured Todd Bowles to a lateral position, I would have more hope. Haslett being retained? All I can do is hope my biggest fear for our defense is wrong.

Doom and gloom is boring...beaten because your organization has been piss poor for about as long as the glory years you grew up watching is different. And the only thing that can turn it around at this point for me is winning. Until we do, I can't get excited...at least not at this point. Excited by the hiring of a new coach? It's tough when I was so against hiring Shanahan in the first place, then got talked into believing he might be the exception to the rule for retreads. It's taken a lot out of me to watch the events unfold over the last few months. Excited because an arena league QB, coach and NFL OC who's put together some so-so and some good offenses is our new coach? Well, not yet. We'll see. His first major decision was to retain Jim Haslett.

Again, I hope...it's all I got, but it ain't high hopes.
 
hmmm...I seem to remember being counseled for being too "positive" at one point. these things go in cycles.

MD5: analogies can be fun. but they can be designed to redact context. they can be designed to ignore dimensions that matter.

for example, there is voyeurism of car wrecks. no doubt about it. then again, there is the analysis/thought that goes into reconstructing how the car wreck happened in the first place...and making changes to reduce the probability of the same SCREW-UPS happening again.

in my own mind, at the front end without knowledge of what the roster will look like next season, and working on the assumption that last season anything that could go wrong did go wrong (i.e., nowhere but up!)...I see us improving considerably on offense and defense. I also believe, projecting on some of the initiatives in play, the track records of these people in the NFL - they have all FAILED and never won the big one - that as constituted this coaching staff, especially the defense, will never produce a championship. do I have a factual basis for this? no. do I even have a statistical foundation? no. just intuition from what has unfolded thus far. it doesn't look like Gruden is in control. is he even down there watching the talent at the senior bowl? I get it: in the most important job of my career....I'll send some folks I have never worked with in the NFL, after one week on scene, to decide what I need...cause Bruce Allen has proven to be a total a whiz kid at this sort iof assessment and delegation in the past.

Too much of this just doesn't add up. from a distance it looks like a teenager being driven to each party and told to be ready to be picked up at 2230. it's easy to scream at folks on the sidelines. quite a different enterprise running an NFL team. could it be Gruden was brought on board and tacitly told "Do what you want with the offense...just make sure its one of the best in the NFL. we'll take care of everything else"?
