Haskins - Going Forward

I haven't heard the podcast yet, but I read a few of the reports and it mirrored a little of my own thinking.

I do think that pre-season, Rivera had looked at winning the division as a lost cause, prompting the development year talk. But the Eagles and the 'Boys have been very disappointing (where as, you could say Washington, despite the losses, has actually performed above expectation!) and now we're looking suddenly like contenders for the division by default of everyone else sinking down to our level.

It gives a very good motivational target to our young players, something to strive for other than just a work-in-progress!

Good find ST. You probably saw me conversing with guys about this on Twitter yesterday. There seems to be this belief that Rivera is just going to ride with Haskins all season in order to find out what he’s got, that winning isn’t the ‘goal’, and that this is the way to go.

First of all, I think Rivera has made it clear that that’s not necessarily the plan. I have no doubt that assessing Haskins potential is a major goal this year. But it may not take a full season to make a determination. It may take 4-5 games. There will always be the argument that it can take years to find out how good a young QB can be. But on the other hand, I think in a lot of cases coaches can get a pretty good idea early on who a QB is and who they might become. If we’re being honest with ourselves, the really good ones show they are going to be really good ones and it doesn’t take long to be able to see that, at least in flashes. Mike and others have rightfully pointed out - we haven’t seen much evidence from Haskins that he can be a difference making QB. The most generous assessment one can make is that he’s got one hell of an arm. But we know the scrap heap of NFL QBs is full of guys who had great arms but never became winning QBs. He has to have some games where he throws for 360 yds and 3 TDs , hits most open receivers in stride all game long, or I believe Rivera will start the process of moving on sooner rather than later.

At 9:56, RIGHT before he starts talking about how the division starting out has basically opened up some opportunities he may not have foreseen he says

If we never play him, he never grows but there is a point where you say, taking a step back and watching is the best thing for you now. So we'll see, we'll see as we go forward

I think Rivera honestly saw us at 1-2 or 0-3 right now possibly beating the Browns. He likely figured we would be 2 games behind Philly having lost the tie breaker, and that Dallas would be around 2 - 1. I don't think that means he was trying to lose, or resigned to losing, but good coaches understand their team better than anyone of us on a message board. They can take that info and draw a reasonable conclusion.... while understanding there are positive and negative surprises wrapped up in there. I think seeing what's going on with Haskins and his development, as well as where the division is, he's now elevated what he needs to see on a regular basis from Haskins because he knows we're in a new situation.

I will say I want Haskins to get reps and I don't WANT to go into this offseason wondering if Haskins is the guy. I want to KNOW whether he is or isn't. I still don't have expectations within myself that Allen leads us to the playoffs... but if Rivera thinks he does, and he wants to shelf Haskins for a few weeks to let him sit and learn without getting his head bashed in... I guess I can't hate it. I don't want Rivera to be static either. Gruden used to appear so stubborn because he would get a gameplan or something and just hold onto it. No flexibility, no reaction to whats in front of it... he wanted what he wanted to work and he went down in flames trying to force it.

Not good footwork here by Haskins but had nowhere to step. Still got enough on the ball. Physical stuff you can't really teach that make you hope he can bring it all together. Making the hard throws look normal is great as long as you don't make the normal throws look hard.

You know what, Haskins? Do it, then. Don't talk about it, don't take videos of yourself being a workout warrior with no one around you. Don't get pissy when people tell you that you sucked. Own it, accept it and get better from it. Don't say "we weren't" and include yourself... speak only of yourself and how much you need to get better. That's what leaders do.

Do I believe he can do it? Not a chance in hell, but he can at last go out there and try. Not throw three pickles, cough up one and leave open receivers running around when he has time.

quarterback threw interceptions, but that’s just the nature of the game. They’re good players too. They play to
make plays. We’ve got to make more plays, and that’s something that I’ve got to keep crafting and
understanding. I talked to [QB] Alex [Smith] and we had some great conversations after the game and
yesterday. I’m just looking forward to applying myself this week and keep getting better. I can’t worry about
last week or the week before. I’ll just worry about this week and do what I can to show that I’m the guy for this

Sources told NBC Sports Washington that during the meeting Rivera explained that while Haskins has a lot of talent and showed significant growth this offseason learning the playbook and in training camp, his play through three games has been lacking. What’s worse, last week’s game in Cleveland showed clear regression and one source explained that cannot continue if Haskins wants to stay on the field. Offensive coaches also sat down with Haskins this week to highlight opportunities to make plays and show missed chances that could lead to better results.

Concerning to me that we seem to be back to the norm of negative stuff being leaked to the press. I think most of us assumed there’d likely been discussions but I do t like the details getting put out there.

Here’s the thing... does anyone doubt that Haskins is trying his best and working hard? I fail to see how applying even more pressure (especially leaking that you have to the press) is going to help him perform better. If anything, this kind of stuff is going to make a rookie QB press and increase tension and jitters. I really don’t get it.

And this is coming from Turner, Rivera, or Zampese - because I doubt anyone else would know the details of these conversations. I don’t like this look at all and it’s not a very supportive way to handle your young QB.

Reading the article a lot of it is info stemming from the podcast interview, so I think the only real development is that there was a meeting, which is probably not out of the ordinary. I would imagine Rivera said something along the lines of "we sat down with Dwayne and laid out our expectations."

Paragraph 2 - nope, I know he is. It isn't his effort that concerns me, it is his ability to do it that does. The NFL is nothing but pressure. We've seen Ryan Leaf lose his cool, and several others crack. it is what it is.

I don't know if it's 'leaks' as much as the information here is nothing different than what Rivera has said in press conferences and interviews. I don't see anything in this article or anywhere else that is different than what Rivera has openly said in public.

I guess I am not sure how much pressure is too much. My job depends upon your job being done correctly as quickly as possible.

I think I am going to put as much as I can up until breaking point and then back off some.
