Haskins - Going Forward

After showing nothing but support for Haskins yesterday, Rivera now saying that there is a limit and that Haskins will need to show improvement if he wants to continue to be the starter.

I caught that too.... maybe he's found the line in the sand after watching the game over again last night / this morning.

I think it's just the classic managerial approach of wrapping constructive criticism in praise and support in action. He literally said that 'the players left it all out there on the field and deserve better from their starting QB'. That's really putting it on Haskins.

I think there were a lot of players whose play let down 'their team', but he's definitely not taking it easy on or coddling Haskins.

Galdi drops some perspective

They both sucked. Not sure what Galdi is trying to say here. Haskins' issues are more fundamental than just being new to the NFL. They're literally fundamental problems. Allen didn't have those basic fundamental issues like mechanics and could rush, something Haskins can't do.

I'm not going to try and change anyone's opinion on a QB. But he was good enough in his 2nd season to help them win 10 games and get to the playoffs while throwing for 3000+ yds, 20 TDs and just 9 INTs. And so far in 2020, he is completing over 70% of his passes with 10 TDs already and just one pick.

We must have different definitions of 'suck'.

Ultimately those kinds of comparisons don't mean anything. Peyton Manning and Troy Aikman were terrible right out of the gate. It doesn't mean Haskins will have a similar trajectory. But what it does show is that one cannot with authority assume a young QB will never succeed based on early performances.

I feel weird even 'defending' Haskins in the abstract, because I wanted his ass benched yesterday (and still think that would've been appropriate - and certainly would've gotten his attention). I see all the warts you guys do. But ultimately Rivera inherited the kid, we spent a 1st round pick on him, and we have no choice but to give him every opportunity to show he can play the position or not.

It kind of sucks - because we've been at this for decades. But there's literally no choice but to go through the process.

Here's another one...

Haskins had his worst start of his career. There is no debating that. But his mistakes are correctable. They are things he can learn from and improve on. Most of the QBs drafted highly can all throw and most of them can throw accurately. It is always about how they adjust to the NFL. Do they learn how the game works. And most importantly, how they learn from their own mistakes. I don’t know what it’s like for other teams with young QBs, but it seems like for Redskins fans in the past and Team fans now, we want instant success and if we don’t see it, it’s time to move on. I don’t know if Haskins can be the guy. I don’t think it is known at this time and anyone who says they know needs to look at the 3rd string QB on the Team and see how his career started. He was deemed a bust and eventually run out of SF just as he started playing well.

I’ve always said that Haskins should be given this entire year to show if he gets it or if he doesn’t. We should see improvement throughout the year. If we don’t see it, then there is a high likelihood the Team will be in a high draft position to pick a new QB next year. If he does show improvement, then they will be able to draft more help around him. If you are trying to win and trying to make the playoffs, then yes you pull him and put in someone else when he plays like that. I don’t think that’s the goal this year. So play him with all his failures and successes. He will figure it out or he won’t. If it becomes a disaster, then yes you make the change. Otherwise, just roll with it.

rese

we have been at this for decades, so we can't expect it to be fixed in 3 games. I said it yesterday, Kyle Smith and Ron Rivera are trying to 'fix' something that has been broken for a long time. They're changing the culture, the personnel is younger, the team appears to have a potental level of young talent that it hasn't had in a long time. The defense as about as close to set as we've seen since the super bowl team, I'm not saying this is as GOOD as the Super Bowl team, but looking at our Roster, it's about as complete as it has been since then. We find ourselves talent deficient on offense with limited playmakers. I imagine offense will be the focus this offseason. When was the last time you could look at a Washington roster and say we're 3 or 4 players away from contending? It can't happen over night and evaluation and development is part of the process.

Another thing that's not being talked about is that Haskins SHOULD have had 4 INTs yesterday. Isaiah Wright bailed him out when he hit the defender and knocked the ball loose. We scored a TD on that drive. Terrible throw but hell of a rebound.

Our DBs got shredded for the 2nd week in a row yesterday. I am not enough of a football expert to know if the talent is there, but they too are adjusting to a new system, or if we need major upgrades there. I also don't quite understand why Turner/Rivera are pass happy at a time when your young QB needs a rushing game to support him, and when our DBs don't appear capable of consistently covering anyone. We talked about it in chat yesterday, but we cannot cover good WR corps in zone if our life depended on it. The Browns had receivers running wide open all day long yesterday. It could be there is a method to their madness and that they are going to accept a lot of failure in the short term in the name of pushing and testing these guys. But our secondary is currently a scary thing to watch.

Yeah, and this got worse I think once we lost Young and Ioaniddis. We've relied, thus far, on a fresh rotation from our D Line to try and take heat off our secondary to a degree.
It was really noticeable yesterday, I thought, when our D started to look gassed later on. The D Line stopped getting home, stopped preventing the run game and then our secondary looked REALLY suspect.

I do wonder if with Young and Ioaniddis rotating in and out in the second half, if our D could have prevented those two later touchdowns.

That just seemed to compound the issue with Dwayne's play, because our D was on the field far too much late in the game without having the depth to provide fresh rotation as it had before.
I think I noted the ToP at after Q3 and it was 25mins to them and 22mins to us (and they were on a drive at the time, so it was pretty even at that point).
It ended up 33/26, so as the game wore on, they started to dominate possession time. Mostly due to turnovers.

It was offensive mistakes leading to defensive tiredness and hence mistakes there too.

Not a fan of some snippets of Haskins social media posts in the last 24 hours. Getting into it with stupid fans. I know that's a boomer take - but you just had the worst game of your NFL career - what the hell are you even DOING on social media right now. I find that disappointing. He's going to lose a lot of goodwill and support if he can't be smarter than that.

this is funny though...

Sensationalized headline that means nothing. Coach speak.
No coach that's serious about rebuild/player development replaces a Qb...basically a rookie, after three games with no regular offseason, in a new offense.
Reporters looking for clicks.

means nothing? Never really knew Coach Rivera to just do coachspeak. Also, its now in the public so Haskins has seen it. Its an actual interview using actual quotes...but, ok.
