Could it be Tua?

Sure. We can’t not talk about it if it’s all over the news. I dont blame you at all for bringing it up. Or for trying to wrap your head around it.

All Im saying is I refuse. 🙂 If the Redskins to that my head will remain unwrapped.

Lol... I hear you brother Henry, I really do!

I have a lot of faith in Kyle Smith, so whatever they do I'll be excited about. But I still have to imagine you cant pass on Young with having just drafted Haskins. He seemed to show a lot of improvement every game and especially the last two. You have to give him more than 7 games to show what he has, and even with that it was promising.

In addition, by drafting Tua you are it just giving up Haskins but also Young. Tua would have to be graded a lot higher in their minds to move ahead with that. I'm holding out hope the Lions want Tua and get scared and give us their second round pick to move up. Unlikely I know.

It’s evidence that when you spend two draft picks on two quarterbacks, the best you can hope for is wasting one of those picks. And you might even waste both.

How many were wasted on Griffin? If...and this is a HUGE IF...the powers that be feel Haskins is not the answer, then let's not dilly dally for a couple seasons as the evidence becomes clearer and clearer to everyone except the owner and the GM.

I think that's a totally reasonable take. But the wildcard in this is that Rivera and Smith's jobs depend on having the right guys at key positions. They don't have the luxury of 'waiting and seeing'. That's the wildcard in the equation. There's a possibility they LOVE Tua and are lukewarm on Haskins. If that were the case, I wouldn't fault them for making a decisive change. And I'd blame Snyder for the waste of a 1st rounder.

You know I'm a lot higher on Haskins than you are. I really think he's got a special arm, and when comfortable in a system is deadly accurate. I still believe that. I am not sure about Haskins 'upstairs'. We'll see. But you and I agree for once. Worst thing you could do if you don't believe Haskins is the QB of the future is to continue with him when you are in a position to pick 2nd in the draft and possibly 'correct' a draft mistake.

Twitter going absolutely ape-shit tonight as there are rumors from supposedly reputable sources that the Redskins could draft Tua and let Haskins and him battle it out for the starting job.

This is where you lose me, on this rumor.
If you do indeed pass up Chase Young, for a QB at the #2 overall pick, it's NOT going to be for a guy simply to "battle it out" for the starting job.
It's going to be a guy that you're not only sold on to be the absolute starter, but franchise leader for years to come, and lift us to contender status.
Another way to look at is, if we draft Young at #2, do you really believe that our vision for Young would be to "battle it out" for a starting position at DE ?
#2 picks, especially ones taken as an alternative to a "generational talent" have a much higher bar set, than to create a camp battle.
So I'm not buying into this rumor at all.

I can't lose you - because it's not my rumor :) I addressed that same issue in an earlier post though. I agree. If they defy predictions and draft Tua, it's because they absolutely don't believe Haskins is the guy. Obviously if this is really the plan, they aren't going to say that publicly. First of all, it would be humiliating to Haskins. Secondly - it's still possible the Bengals draft Tua at #1 and the Redskins have to go forward with Haskins.

Oh - and let's not equate Haskins with Chase Young. Most draft experts had Haskins rated far below where the Redskins took him - while Young is a consensus no-brainer all world potential pick. There's no comparison. Haskins has looked 'okay' at best. It's not beyond the realm of possibility they think they can do better.

If they think Haskins was a blown pick, possibly, assuming they view Burrow as a better bet. But the bottom line is, you don't destroy your current highly drafted QBs morale/confidence until you have to :) And here's the other thing ... the only way there's any truth to this rumor is if they absolutely thing Tua is a game-changing can't miss QB (setting aside Henry's point that it is always a crapshoot). I don't think there's any possibility you take this gamble unless you are a) near certain Haskins is fatally flawed, and b) believe Tua is the next great NFL QB. I don't think it's a matter of, let's draft another 1st round QB and hope one of them pans out. I agree, that's probably not tenable.

Chalk it up to FWIW

I saw that too. I don't know that it means anything one way or the other. I'm giving the rumors some credence primarily because JP Finlay is, despite that 'clarification'... Finlay is one of the more reliable Skins beat guys and not prone to put unsubstantiated stuff out there as fact like say, Dianna Russini is...

Just joined and happy to be here.

one thing nobody has talked about is how drafting Tua could energize our fan base. And God knows it needs something. I 've been a fan for over 50 years and will remain one till I die. But our fan base is shrinking. They are not adding young fans, the passion has all but died. I remember when you arranged your Sunday around the game. That is all but gone. I'm not talking about the people on this forum. I'm talking about casual fans who are the bulk of the base. They are the difference between filling up a stadium and having 40,000 show up(at least half from the visiting team).

this kid Tua, in addition to being really good, has the kind of fan appeal and charisma that just draws you in. I'm sure Haskins is a fine young man, but he will never have the personality to excite fans. And this is a business where marketing the brand is important. I just think the excitement Tua brings is something to consider. Just sayin...

Making football decisions based on charisma and personality, sinks your franchise and gets you fired .

When Mark Sanchez was in the draft, almost every expert raved about his personality. How he had charisma...leader of men. Remember Jaws raving that the guy just had "IT". How'd that work out?

Redskins Nation is damn funny. The fan base will tell you "We need to do a full rebuild" "Need young talent and someone to develop them."

Redskins draft young talent and when they hit the field, if they don't immediately put up top three performances week to week, they are ready to throw them out and draft the latest "IT" guy.

"We have patience for a rebuild!"- Fanbase......Umm no, you don't.

Hell, look at Matt Ioannidis. 5th round pick that when he didn't immediately hit the field, folks wanted to move on from him.

Now, he's arguably our best defensive lineman.

Now after just 7 games, they want to throw Haskins on the street. Even though over his last three starts, he had the highest QB rating among rookies.

And the fanbase doesn't think that's worth exploring/give more time to? Thank goodness someone else is in charge......

That's more than I've typed in a post in five years... guess the new digs are having an effect....lol

Tua has a history of serious injuries playing behind one of the best OL in college. How the heck do they think they can draft him here and expect him to be anything but chum in the water?

Also, Alex Smith is going to attempt a comeback. Make no mistake about that. Whether he makes it all the way back or not is up for debate, but he is our 2nd QB if he does. There is your competition. Not some broken down QB who came from playing on a superstar team.

You don't think it's possible Cincy takes Tua, and the Skins take Burrow ?
I really don't like the idea of giving up on Haskins for a guy like Burrow who had one fantastic year in college. Haskins also had one great year in college, has continued to show improvement AND Burrow couldn't beat him out at Ohio State. It would make more sense for someone like Tua who you have multiple years of production. I see Burrow as just as risky as Haskins was and more so now as Kyle Smith has 1 season of personally seeing him every day.

I think I’ve said this before, but I can’t remember. I know I’ve had discussions with family about this. The problem with drafting a QB this year is that you don’t really improve the team that much. Will Tua or Burrow be an upgrade over Haskins? People seem to think so, but you don’t really know. However, you have now used your most valuable draft pick to marginally at best improve your team. Tua would still be a rookie going through all the rookie growing pains. Meanwhile, you haven’t addressed the other positions that need improvement, such as the O-line, TE, and pretty much the whole defense. I know you can’t improve all those positions with 1 pick. But you can improve one of them. I just don’t think it’s smart to draft a QB in back to back years when you have so many holes to fill. Unless you think this team is close and is just a QB away. But I thought that guy got fired. Are we (collective we) longing for the days of that guy and want his philosophy back?

The bigger thing though is that this is lying season. Everyone will lie about what they want to do to drive up the value of their pick, to get teams to take other guys, etc. it’s hard to imagine the Redskins being this coordinated in a lie like this, but I’ve learned that during this time of year to believe none of the rumors. Some will turn out to be true. But I just don’t believe them now.

Yeah, this is rumor mill season and it's standard practice for the top drafting teams to meet with all of the top ranked players.

What we need to do now is float a rumor that the Skins have received interest from a couple teams in trading Haskins for a #1 pick this year.

Ron Rivera doesn't take this job if he has any real doubts about Haskins developing into a legit starter. He stated from the beginning that his first order of business in building a team is to lock in on a franchise QB. At the time he took the job Tua was not in the conversation--his recovery from the injury was still a big question mark. Joe Burrow wasn't an option--he was/is going to Cincy (poor bastard). The QB on our roster Ron looked at when evaluating this team and weighing taking this job? Dwayne Haskins.

For me, unless something has happened between the day Ron took the job and the last day or two that has totally convinced him he was wrong about Haskins, and that he can't win with him, we're not drafting Tua. The silly season is in full swing and we're happily throwing chaff in the wind.

Pretty great first post. I think you're going to like it here and welcome! That's not something I'd thought about... interesting. I think it could be a factor that emboldens them if they really are considering this, but ultimately it comes down to which one of them has the brightest future under center. Wish I had that crystal ball because it's very rare indeed that we have a #2 pick in an NFL draft. If Haskins isn't the guy, but one of the QBs in this draft is, you have to consider it.
