Commanders Trade Deadline Thread

Unfortunately, with him being injured I doubt anyone would make the trade. Only players that could maybe net us decent picks would be Payne and Deebo? Deebo could probably get a 4th or 5th from someone like the steelers who are shopping for a WR.

We are lacking in the talent on this team. If we’re so determined to get an abundance of picks we’d be better off losing games and trading with a team wanting to move up. However, this draft is lacking in QB talent similar to last year so there may not be many takers. The way it’s looking we’ll be picking in the 10-20 range and will need that blue chip talent. It’s rough.

I don't want to trade Terry. His absence just shows how weak we are at the position and how critical it is to find a legit #2 next season who can step in as a #1 if Terry goes down again. But they don't have the draft capital for a trade so I really hope there is a legit WR in FA they can acquire. I do not believe they have that player on the roster. It's unrealistic to assume McCaffery or Lane to develop into a player like Tee Higgin or any of the really good #2's around the league. Most of those guys showed more in their rookies seasons, certainly by year 2.

Tough, tough spot. So many needs at critical positions. Peters and his team really have their work cut out. At least they don’t need a QB.
Legit WR
Legit LB
Legit CB and walk away from Lattimore.
Edge Rusher.

Yeah that's a lot.

and really TE, too. I don't think we can rely on Ertz next year and I don't see a TE ready to step up.

Going forward the units I feel best about are
QB
Oline
RB (though I think Rodriguez and McNichols are expiring so we probably need at least one more body there, too)

I sure I am alone on this island, but…I think we may have developed a ‘Bill of goods’ on the young RB. I’m not ready to go all-in on him just yet.

What has happened recently is teams are stacking the box and JCM has no place to go. He's still the same back and I for one am excited to have him as the prime back. Agreed QB, OL and RB are the strongest groups. However our first round pick is still getting worked and this can not be ignored.

I agree, and it we had chances to take advantage but misses them over the last 2 weeks between drops / miscommunications / errant throws... etc.

I would personally like to see a scat back type though. A Chris Thompson type that plays all over the field and is deadly in space. We kind of have that in Deebo, but i'd like to get it out of the backfield in a younger version.

All that said, this is the Trade Deadline thread, so I don't see us making any moves at RB in a trade. If anything it's going to be a street walker short term signing. I ultimately don't think we're buyers for anything 'serious' at the deadline. Possible we could be sellers, but I'm not even totally convinced of that.

I think AP is going to have to loosen the purse strings and get a little more comfortable “overspending” on a few impact players with all our cap space. Just have to pick the right guys and structure the contracts well. And then draft well to keep backfilling with cheap talented guys you control for 4-5 years

Exactly this. Not every multiyear deal needs to be some great value signing.

According to Spotrac, trading Terry at this point would carry a $29m dead cap for 2026.

Seems unlikely we would do that...

I don't disagree, however I do think who's available factors into this. There just weren't a lot of players you wanted to pay big money for, and most big money contracts don't work out. Some do, but not a ton.

The approach was pretty clear at the beginning, which was draft and sign veterans to short term deals. Then don't re-sign them when the young guys take their place.

Then we had 3 problems:
1. We got too good too fast, and there was a real desire to attempt to fix the 2024 team through a trade. Hence Lattimore.
2. The 2024 draft class has been "ok" but not great outside of Daniels. It looked promising, however Sainristil's regression along with none of Newton, McCaffery or Sinnott being starters makes it a little "meh"
3. Because of the good record + Lattimore trade, our draft capital for 2025 was limited.

Now here we are. I think Peters will spend, but I think he's going to be very judicious about who he spends on because he doesn't want to make a big money mistake.

Agreed, Boone. I'd even add Deebo Sameul to the mix and Payne if he could fetch us something.
They could move Deebo and Payne. I doubt they will, but they could.

I doubt they move Deebo especially because I am going to bet Terry is going to IR on Tuesday. Nobody has told me as much, but that's my bet. If that's the case, then they will want to at least have an NFL receiver on the field so as not to damage Daniels.

Payne, eh. If they can get something for him, great. But I would want a minimum 3rd for a player who is playing at a very high level currently on what would be a cheap deal.

I tend to think there’s a (slim) chance we go after Brian Thomas.

We need a receiver, not just because of Terry and Brown being out, but also to (try to) change how defenses are playing us.

Yes, there’s fast-tracked chemistry with Daniels, but Daniels can also provide inside info as to whether the trade’s worth it. How good is their relationship? How does he take to coaching? How is he playing on time within a scheme? How would he fit in the locker room? Etc.

As has been mentioned, Payne’s the obvious candidate to offer up. Fair to think that wouldn’t be an even trade (and we’d have to give up more) as Thomas is a young, cost-controlled 1st rounder, but he’s on the block and Payne’s not, and that alone shifts the dynamics. How much? No idea.

The FO surely has to be feeling some pressure. This season’s setting up to be a massive step back and therefore embarrassment.

I don't think the Jags are going to move BT Jr at the trade deadline at all given they just put Hunter on IR. I definitely think it is worth an offseason conversation with them and, for me, I would put our 1st rounder in play if we get at least a couple of their Day 2 picks back

JCM is that type of back. We just haven't seen him break loose a lot as he's still new in town, but in the open field yeah I'll take my chances with Bill.

I don't know. You'd think NFL fans would know, you cannot make any player assessment or make predictions based on a handful of games or even one season. We should know this. Bill has had some good carries. Saying much more than that about him seems like asking to be reminded of this once again.
