Commanders Trade Deadline Thread

The Niners also had a lot of picks going into the 2024 draft and traded away a 3rd comp pick to make a real run at a Super Bowl. Different situation (and Chase did deliver for them in the Super Bowl)

I don’t think anyone had an issue with the trade at the time. As skinsinparadise calls out, the issue was keeping him this year vs cutting him after he clearly looked cooked. Cutting him and moving on would have been the courageous move

Yeah for me that decision seems to be a big X factor in the season.

I know you like Suter's takes on Sheehan. I like listening to him, too. He made a good point which what do they have to lose by making changes in the secondary -- just try new stuff, its hard for things to get worse.

It feels like we got three mistakes brewing with Lattimore.

A. the trade itself. I can forgive it -- I get the go for broke approach to last season.

B. Doubling down on him. He had if I recall little to none guaranteed money where you can cut bait but they didn't do it. I didn't like the move at the time, and I like it a lot less now.

C. Playing him no matter how poorly plays

This is just a guess. But considering how stubborn this coaching staff is with Lattimore I strongly suspect that they lobbied Peters to go get Lattimore at the time. It feels like there is so much psychologically invested in Lattimore that it comes off a bit wacky me.

Like heck we will sink the season if need be to prove a point about Lattimore. Some hyperbole on my end to make a point. But the more I digest this, the more i am thinking that the coaches, probably Whitt, were invested in Lattimore and it wasn't Peters doing that trade purely on his own.

For a FO-coaching staff that prides itself on culture. IMHO this is an example of bad culture. Rare for this crew -- but to me the whole dance around Lattimore doesn't make them look good.

Lordy, I love how we fans rewrite history.

Yeah, Lattimore didn't look good last year but he was injured and we all knew he was injured. For me, that trade was this year and next, not last year. I HOPED Lattimore could contribute last year but I never really exected it. So cutting him before he had an off-season to get right physicall would have been crazy.

As for Young, he had a sack in the Super Bowl but he didn't deliver. He was the same guy, half assing it while chasing the ball that we saw the last two years here in DC. The dude has started all of 2 two games since that trade and those 2 were for the Saints this year. You want to talk about cooked? Young makes Lattimore's contributions look like those of an All Pro.

I didn't think it was crazy at the time, in the off season to cut bait, I was wanting that and some others here wanted it too.

the thing is even if you hoped for a bounce back season, the dude hasn't been able to stay healthy for years. So 18 million for a dude who is lucky to play half a season, yuck.

The irony is he's actually been healthy, so he's showing he can stay healthy he simply sucks now.

But there was a dual concern with Lattimore. 1. Health. 2. Play.

I think Peters has done a good job here, I made a long post defending him a few days back. But this IMO isn't one of his shining moments. you don't win them all. At the moment though am more frustrated with the coaching staff related to Lattimore than them doubling down by bringing him back.

Agreed

I think the team gave him an "incomplete" grade after last season because he was never fully healthy. Should they have? Well, I think the question is what the medical people thought of his physical state after the season, and if it could be improved.

I can see the logic of, "ok, it's not good, he's not really healthy, let's spend the off-season getting him healthy and go from there.

Also, they did draft a guy, and they signed a a guy, but honestly, there weren't any starting CBs out in FA. So, shrug.

I know they really like Sainristil in the slot, but he's struggling there. So I wonder if they start to move him back outside to see if that's a better spot for him, play Iggy in the slot, and Lattimore's snaps are reduced. That might happen. They have been reluctant to do that, but desperate times call for desperate measures. And it would be a different story if Sainristil was killing it inside, and the thought is "don't fix something which isn't broken." But he's also playing poorly, so, maybe that's a solution now.

C. Playing him no matter how poorly plays
For the last 4 weeks, there hasn't been any real option. Jones had been on IR. There really isn't anybody else on the roster who plays outside. I get the "who cares, play a practice squad guy" aspect, but I'm not sure that really would have done anything other than probably destroy the confidence of the PS player and cause some questions in the locker room.

One other thing, and I'm not going back to look this up, but I'm pretty sure Lattimore missed either all or most of the voluntary OTAs and workouts. If I'm right, it wasn't a good look then, and it's REALLY not a good look now. We were somewhat distracted by the Terry situation, and Tunsil also didn't post. But Tunsil gets a pass because he's played at an all-pro level as recently as last year, and is playing at a very high level this year.

Lattimore was hurt and played poorly, then skipped voluntary workouts, and is now playing badly.

Shame. Shame. Shame.

I will say to the other point of the staff being stubborn, I'm not entirely sure how stubborn and how stuck they are.

Great Googly Moogly, the Rams just got 25-year-old CB Roger McCreary, and a 2026 6th from the Titans, for a 2026 5th. That's it. That's the deal we couldn't or didn't want to beat to help our secondary by adding a young guy who'd instantly be our best corner. Ugh.

Agreed

There were plenty of corners available in FA we could've signed including some with AP ties. It was one of the deepest position groups in FA and we probably had a great shot at Reed and Ward if we wanted it

DJ Reed - drafted by AP
Charvarius Ward - w AP in SF (2nd best CB per PFF this year)
Paulson Adebo
Carlton Davis
Byron Murphy

This does not even include guys like Brandon Stephens, Darius Slay, Kristian Fulton and Mike Jackson.

He's a target of mine in FA if the Rams don't resign him but he is a pure slot corner. The team would have to make the decision to move Sainristil outside

That’d be a steal for us. I think it would take our 3rd.

Most likely. Really depends how much he and TLaw/Coen hate each other. The vibes are terrible. TLaw throws hospital balls like it’s his job, BTJ gets banged up and tentative, Coen has to answer for it at the podium every week while trying to install buy-in to his new culture. It’s a mess, you never know.

Yep. BTJ has also dropped a bunch of balls this year and I know the media has questioned his physicality. It is entirely possible this is who he is but it is worth making the bet that a reunion with Jayden will pay dividends.

I know a lot of contenders will want him but all they can really give up are picks. Given they are in the playoff hunt, I think JAX would probably prefer player + pick and it helps we are not in the conference.

I would give BTJ late first to mid 2nd value and more the latter given how this season has gone. I think a mid 3rd from us + Payne (3rd rd value) approaches that. They may also want Von Miller too for extra pass rush juice on passing downs beyond what Walker can give them

ESPN trade deadline article:

Washington Commanders (3-5)

Chance to make playoffs: 13.2%
Projected first-round draft slot: No. 13

Adding, subtracting or sitting it out? Washington could stand pat. GM Adam Peters is known to embrace a good deal, and Washington has needs at several positions, including edge rusher. So, expect the Commanders to monitor the market in the next week. But teams I've talked to aren't expecting fireworks out of Washington at this moment. -- Fowler

Key position of need: Wide receiver. Given the injury issues with Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel, another veteran at receiver would be useful. -- Schatz

Who could be on the move? Cornerback Noah Igbinoghene. He was fine in the slot last season when he played 75% of Washington's snaps. But the Commanders moved Mike Sainristil back inside, signed Jonathan Jones (best suited inside) and drafted outside corner Trey Amos. So, Igbinoghene has played only 40 snaps this season. Whether another team would give up a late-round pick for him is another matter. Washington also has 2024 third-round pick Brandon Coleman, who was benched at left guard. But he still has two years left on a rookie deal and provides young depth. Defensive tackle Daron Payne has one year left on his deal, but he's playing well and could be dealt in the offseason. -- John Keim

Who could be targeted? Jets cornerback Michael Carter II. The Jets' acquisition of Jarvis Brownlee Jr. has knocked Carter out of the rotation. The Commanders could slide Carter into the slot, bump Sainristil outside and get Marshon Lattimore off the field -- a white flag on last year's trade deadline acquisition who simply hasn't panned out despite a pick against the Chiefs. -- Solak

Interesting stuff from Keim, especially the Payne nugget. It would be better to deal him now because teams have more urgency at the deadline

Too many injuries at this time. Trade! Trade! Trade! Get picks for next year and beyond for draft(s). Ain't happening this year. Superbowl run was a nice thought for this year but I think AP should reload the draft picks and build the team going forward. Youth injection needed on this team. My :twocents:

Which players can the team trade to get picks for rounds 1-3 in return?
