Commanders Trade Deadline Thread

I'm not sure obviously but I think Payne is worth more than a 4th or 5th. Ditto Deebo. Think we could squeeze out a little more for those.
I'd also keep Coleman unless really happy with what is offered depending on why we have soured on him of course.
I am wondering how Conerly graded out last night. The only time I heard his name last night was negatives from the announcers. If he has been sucking, do they give Coleman a shot at RT and that makes him happy? Move Conerly inside maybe?

Revisiting this, we should sell off after we lose the next two and are sitting at 3-6. Q is what do we get for our guys? These are the trade pieces I see:
First, I think we need to lose the next two before we take any of this seriously. The NFL is entirely week to week. I would be surprised but not shocked if they won in KC next week. Why? Because the NFL is that way, not because I have some magical faith in the team. It just happens every year when a desperate team wins unexpected games.

Payne - 4th or 5th? He’s been up and down but the splash plays have been there. Could eat the remaining base salary this year
It think this would depend on whether a team thought he was part of their plans moving forward and signed him to an extension. Otherwise, they'd be signing up to a $28m salary for 2026, or just a few game rental. I doubt they would get a 4th for 10 games.

Von - 5th for 6th swap? He’s probably wants to go to a contender anyway. He has been getting his sacks on a limited pitch count. There’s a massive need out there for pass rushers and a lack of supply. The Jags have 13 picks in the draft next year and can certainly spend draft capital
I'd trade him for whatever if we're out of it. Even a conditional 7th or something.
Bobby - 6th? Probably his call ultimately. Won’t trade him if he doesn’t want to be moved.
As you said, he's not going anywhere unless he wants to.

Lattimore - 6th for 7th swap? You laugh but William Jackson was worse and got us a conditional 7th back. Wouldn’t surprise me if the Bears want him given their need at outside corner and Dennis Allen’s long relationship with him.
I think the difference is people saw that Jackson was being played out of position by Ron and co. and thought they could do better. Lattimore hasn't proven he can do just about anything...

Iggy - 7th? Some teams were interested before cutdown day. Midseason, does this guy bring back value?
I'd keep Iggy, if only because I think they should try and re-sign him again in the off-season.

Deebo - 5th. All dependent on the heel and if he can play before the deadline. He’s been having a good season and, with WR injuries, maybe some team sees him as the piece to add for the playoffs. Again, Jags would make a lot of sense as all their receivers but Hunter are banged up
I would actually prefer to keep Deebo and re-sign him. He's a beast, and has been the heart and soul of the team while Terry has been out.

Ertz - Unlikely as I haven’t heard of contenders losing starting TEs
Nobdoy is trading for Ertz.
Coleman - Player for player trade candidate but I would hold on unless a left tackle hungry team pays a premium
See, he's the first guy I would try to trade. I don't think you need him if he's going to be inactive on gamedays, and he doesn't seem to be happy here. Fresh start for everybody.

We don't need to trade for anything,(Not that we have anything to trade) and we certainly don't need to give up any more draft picks.

The worst thing that could occur is to make any win now moves. Any moves would probably need to be for next year and the staff needs to figure out how to keep this team playing respectfully for the remainder of the season. There have been some embarrassing games so far and don't need more or you lose the team

- Keeping a player like Deebo going into his 30s is a bad bad move. It’s not just the injury history but everyone is forgetting the weight issues too. We are seeing contract year Deebo this season. I would move him and use the money on an emerging young player like Wan’dale or Shaheed instead

- You can make similar arguments about Lattimore. We’ve had our back and forth about PFF but his PFF grade and other advanced metrics were solid when we traded for him. It’s the same player as last year but healthier this go around. I think the league knows our scheme is trash. There are also a lot of NO alums around the league like Payton, Campbell and Allen who may want him

- We’ve discussed this before but Payne is not a $28m salary next year to the team that acquires him. It is $17.5M. If the team that acquires him sees him as a difference making near Pro Bowl caliber player, that’s solid value even if you don’t extend him

- I am not moving Coleman for a pick unless someone offers a 3rd, which we are not getting, but I’d listen to player for player trades. The Browns, for example, desperately need a left tackle. I’d swap Coleman for Isaiah McGuire, for example. McGuire is on his rookie deal in year 3 and probably gets an extension this offseason

I am absolutely listening to any trade discussions involving young players on rookie deals who could help us next year.

Rentals - agreed with you

I'd probably just leave Conerly where he is at for now. He's had his moments of struggle in the year but overall has been ok I think. Not sure what is going on with Coleman. I thought his benching was because he was always dealing with some nagging little injuries since he arrived and it was a message to him about being available and not "maybe" available. Like toughen up or lose your spot. I could be totally wrong on that but that was my impression. In the process Paul just came in and has played pretty damn well, so its not great for Coleman.

New ESPN article lists Commanders as possible destination for a couple of their top 25 trade deadline targets:

20. Cam Taylor-Britt, CB, Cincinnati Bengals

The buzz: Taylor-Britt was a healthy scratch Thursday night against Pittsburgh, forcing him to contemplate his immediate future. DJ Turner and Dax Hill have emerged as the Bengals' primary corners. Taylor-Britt has shown flashes, but he needs to up his 2026 free agency value. And he could use a fresh start. Perhaps the Bengals will give one to him. His former defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo is now coordinating the Colts' defense, which is depleted at corner. -- Fowler

The tape: Taylor-Britt is only 26 years old, and he has traits that might entice some teams. He can match vertically in man coverage due to his long speed, but I see a better fit in zone-heavy defenses. Taylor-Britt had seven interceptions and 15 pass breakups from 2023 to 2024. -- Bowen

Predicted chance of getting traded: 25%
Team fits: Indianapolis Colts, Washington Commanders, Philadelphia Eagles

22. Kyle Dugger, S, New England Patriots

The buzz: The belief in league circles is that Dugger would have been dealt before Week 1 but for his cost-prohibitive $9.75 million salary. There was interest then and could be again. Now that New England is sitting at 5-2, perhaps it will revisit a potential deal. However, Dugger has played a combined 102 defensive snaps over the past two weeks due to an injury to starter Jaylinn Hawkins, which might change things. Dugger would be a quality third-safety insurance for a team in contention. -- Fowler

The tape: Yeah, Dugger can help a team looking for a No. 3 safety. He can play from depth in split-safety coverages, while his 6-foot-1, 216-pound frame helps create more opportunities as a dime/sub-package defender in a multiple scheme. -- Bowen

Predicted chance of getting traded: 25%
Team fits: New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders

I thought DJ Turner was a nickel CB and Dax Hill was a safety. I don’t think a guy who needs to be in a zone heavy scheme is what we are looking for. Also, this was the guy who was trash talking before our game against them last year

Apparently logan wilson has requested a trade out of Cincinnati.

He's the type of linebacker we could use assuming he's really cheap.
Wouldn't give up much though hes fallen out of favor on a bad defense so he's probably not worth much

Unless we surprise, I can't see us being buyers on the trade deadline. In fact, it would frustrate me if we gave up anymore draft picks for short term rentals.

Now, if someone wants to give us a third for Lattimore (fat chance) and a second for Payne I'm listening. Payne is having a really solid year, but I'm suspicious of it. He seems to rev up and down based on whether its a contract year.

I wouldn’t trade for him but I’d look at him in the offseason if he gets cut. What happened to him? He was a rising star a few years ago

Saw some bengals fans saying on Reddit he “got very old over night” and not the same player he was; guessing he lost a step and is slow. Also, being said that he’s not even starting on their defense. Which says a lot since their defense is bad.

Yeah was doing some reading and he lost a step after a 2023 surgery.

I did take a look at the 2026 FA class at ILB and it is stacked, even if a bunch of these guys resign with their current teams.

I do hope we see more Magee with the green dot so we know if he is the guy or not

Trades always have to be judged on two things - who and what you are getting and the cost. That’s it. You don’t ’give up’ draft picks in a trade - you trade for a player and acquire an asset. The only difference between using a pick for a player in the draft and using it to make a trade is the age of the players. That trade-off has to be viewed in the context of knowing what you are getting trading for a known NFL quantity vs. the crapshoot that is a drafted player. There are benefits and risks inherent to both drafting and trading.

Ultimately no matter how you obtain a player it is about talent and cost.

You are 100% right but of course there are more details which people react to; there have been numerous cases where trades are made that may be advantaged towards the side that has more data on the traded player. So their history and tape may be great, but they may be heading for the downside of their career due to a variety of circumstances, and the trading team may be more aware of that. In the draft, it is as you said a different set of risks, but the trade for the "known NFL quantity" is anything but, in many cases. You breathe a sigh of relief when it works out that way, but there are far too many cases of it failing for anyone to feel confident in a trade until much later.

Valid points. A lot of times there is not enough attention paid to whether a player will fit into the role he will be asked to play on his new team. The supporting cast surrounding any player can also be a big factor in how successful he is.

So there are no guarantees as critics of Lattimore will point out. Still, it is hard to deny that a current NFL player with a track record at this level is more of a known quantity than a college player who has never played an NFL down.

I am mostly reacting to the idea that ‘giving up a draft pick’ in a trade = BAD, getting a player via a draft pick = GOOD. It’s a lot more complicated than that.

I think this is baked into the cost of most trades for veteran players. The talent of players who in the past decade are traded for 3rd, 4th, 5th round picks even, it’s clear this is being priced in. The contract as well, compared to the cost controlled rookie contract you’re trading away.

You should always be skeptical when a team gives up a "supposed" shutdown corner because it's very rare to give up one of those in a pass heavy league.
Lattimore was like the hot, crazy chick that some guys look at and think "Yeah she's crazy but I can fix her". And we all know how that works out.....
