Commanders Trade Deadline Thread

I'm sure Green Bay is looking at guys like Njoku or Mayer, but Ertz could be the perfect replacement for Kraft. He won't be the big play guy Kraft was, but he would be the reliable target they need at TE. I get it would probably only be a 6th or 7th, but it seems it would be worth it for both teams. And then Ertz has a legit shot at another ring. I know the other sports trade vets to contenders to give them a shot to win and it's not as common in football, but this makes sense all around. Unless Green Bay has no interest or they don't want to give up a very late pick for half a year of Ertz.

Ertz the ersatz TE

The new front office might be the old front office. How do you make ZERO moves with a team in absolute free fall right now?

Yes, but Whit will be on the sidelines now. It's going to be great!

Watching from the box is like watching the suck on a 21" TV, being on the sidelines, he'll be able to witness the suckage in all of its HD glory...

They may not have had what they felt were reasonable offers. I don’t think giving away what talent we do have for chump change necessarily moves the chains for the future.
Obviously we don’t know what was or wasn’t offered. But still strikes me as odd that we wouldn’t aggressively market guys like Deebo, Von, Payne, etc. I’m not going to pretend to know the comp pick policy, so maybe that factors with some guys.

Just after last Sunday’s outcome not only being a season crushing loss, but losing our QB, there’s no better time to dump assets you likely won’t be using next season. Even for less than desired.

Again, the devil is in the details. Without knowing what offers (if there WERE offers) were made, can we really judge or be critical?

I’m not happy about what’s gone down this year. But I also don’t want the front office making panic moves.

I don’t think trading guys who aren’t part of next years plans is a panic move though.

I’d rather nobody have wanted our guys, than to think we held on to them because the season isn’t mathematically over.

Yeah it is impossible to know what if anything might have been offered. Hopefully there were not situations where they felt a player was worth a 5th they were only offered a 6th so they said no. I'd have taken the low ball just to get something for next year . Also could have tried making offers for others practice squaders or other young players and give them a chance on our roster for this and next season. Maybe a team would have bitten to get one our players

If we’re worried about potential comp picks for the guys we didn’t trade for low value, it means we aren’t planning to spend significant money (or even medium money) in FA, which would offset the potential comp picks anyways. Which means we won’t be really competitive for a couple more years, because this roster needs more of an aggressive FA strategy to improve. Draft picks, small signings, and current player development alone is not going to be nearly enough.

If anything this reads to me like they actually do intend to keep Payne into the last year of his contract, at his current number or after an extension (which I find surprising), and they actually do intend to try to re-sign Deebo (less surprising, but that’ll put a lot of money on the cap at WR overall if he finishes the season healthy). Otherwise why not trade them now, even for less than you feel you deserve? No reason Payne gets more attractive as an asset 8 games from now, with FA and the draft there as competition for improvement at DL for potential suitors. Why not take at least a 4th for him now, if you don’t plan to keep him? So, I can only conclude they actually want to keep him. Same with Deebo who they’ll lose control of anyways if they don’t re-sign him.

I tend to agree. I think they really like Payne, and I think they might be fine letting him play out his contract. I've said that for a while when people (including Keim) have kept saying Payne is essentially on a contract year. No, he's not. It's good for him to play well, but they could just keep him.

Deebo, I dunno, maybe they plan to re-sign him, maybe not, but if there was a serious offer, it would have made sense to do it, because unless that team re-signs him, he'd be a FA, and they could sign him in FA.

I read this as there was not enough value to make it worth it. Now, what is "not enough value?" If you say a 5th for Payne and a 7th for Deebo, is it worth it? Certainly not for Payne, but maybe for Deebo?

It's hard to know.

I'm disappointed we didn't get more draft ammunition today. But it is what it is.

Deebo is the only real professional receiving weapon available on this team in the near future. Sending him off for a 7th is unfathomable to me.

A 7th would be low, I agree, but if they don’t re-sign him then it’s better than nothing, isn’t it?

I’m guessing you’re of the opinion that they must re-sign him then? I don’t disagree, I’m just saying that if they don’t do it, any draft pick would’ve been better than nothing in a lost season

Outside of drafting Daniels and Amos, Peters is quickly becoming a bust of a GM.

Completely agree. So far his drafting has been pretty poor. I don’t like trading away so many picks when we need so many players, even if I’m not sold on his draft picks.
