Commanders Trade Deadline Thread

A 7th would be low, I agree, but if they don’t re-sign him then it’s better than nothing, isn’t it?

I’m guessing you’re of the opinion that they must re-sign him then? I don’t disagree, I’m just saying that if they don’t do it, any draft pick would’ve been better than nothing in a lost season

My concern is who will Mariotta have without Deebo? Lane, Burks, Moore, Robbie Chosen?, Ja’Corey Brooks?, Jacoby Jones?

Yikes. Thoughts and prayers to Marcus.

Agreed. Trading Deebo for a 7th doesn't seem worth it to me. Motivated Payne has been good this year. And we will have Motivated Payne for next season as well. Nobody was offering a 4th, more like a 6th for a 7th and Payne.

Meh. Would have liked some moves but it takes 2 to tango.

Guessing we didn't get any good offers for Payne. Re: Payne, you have to remember he's one of the few people who might leave and get a sizable new contract large enough to actually get us a comp pick. So you want to get more than the comp pick you might get later, and if you don't, no move.

Guessing Bills probably offered like a 7th for Deebo, which ain't worth it. Remember, while the wheels might be falling off, if you want the young talent to learn and take snaps, you still need a team around them, and just dealing for scraps means you probably have fewer veterans to teach the youngins.

I get it, I guess I’m just so used to being able to flip the switch and go into tank mode from the later Snyder years that I didn’t really care if the passing game outcomes went from bad to really bad in the final stretch of the season. But it’s a fair concern, you do still have to worry about morale and developing the young guys who ARE healthy and playing. And being totally uncompetitive doesn’t help that goal. I just hate moral victories in lost seasons, I guess. But it’s something I have to grow out of if we’re going to grow into a real franchise with a real culture, eventually.

I guess the interesting thing with Payne could be, if we keep him one more year through the end of his contract and THEN let him go, we can still spend this upcoming offseason as much as we want without ruining his potential comp pick return. If we secure some legitimate vets this 2026 offseason, nail the draft picks we DO still have for 2026, and then let Payne finish his contract out this upcoming season, we could potentially be in a situation where we don’t need to utilize FA heavily again 18 months from now in 2027 and actually earn that 3rd round comp pick. Hopefully starting the cycle teams like Baltimore, Philly, and SF have perfected with expiring contracts and comp picks

I am absolutely furious with Peters. The market is telling us it is likely we would gave gotten 2 Day 3 picks for Deebo. A 4th+6th for Meyers and a 4th+5th for Shaheed. Absolute GM malpractice not moving him

We have no idea what was offered, if anything.

It's speculating there was an offer.

I'd have hoped they would have moved somebody, but maybe they just didn't have the offers.

It''s a value game. Trading good players for trash picks may set a precendent that teams know they can screw us. One reason Snyder's 'skins always lost every trade is they knew they work him. So, sometimes getting nothing is better than something far, far below fair value.

Peters has to work for the present and for the future.

Still, I would have moved Payne for a 3 if that offer was made. Not sure what I would have asked for for Deebo. Maybe a 4 (I like a profit.) Stupid Lattimore chose a bad time to have a season ending injury. That ham sandwich sure looked tempting.

I’m not thrilled about our lack of draft picks, but I’m glad we didn’t trade Deebo or Payne, they’ve probably been our best players this year.

I can use inference based on market data. If the offers weren’t there, perhaps AP is to blame for not marketing him aggressively enough or correctly

Maybe. But at least in terms of Payne and Deebo, GMs are seeing what we are seeing.

Offenses are gashing us through the middle over the last few games so while Payne has a few highlights, he's failing to clog the middle.
Deebo has not been able to get open and provide a threat/outlet for Daniels/Mariotta. He was solid the first few weeks, but has not been effective the last three weeks. He's been easy to neutralize in man and since his game is YAC that's a bad sign.

I think there are MUCH bigger problems than Payne, who by all the film graders out there, seems to be having an excellent season. The issue is LBs have to cheat outside and there’s nobody to clean things up.

Deebo is a complementary piece. He’s more of a slot/move around, do a lot of things guy. Hes never been a route tree guys.

He’d be a perfect complement to McLaurin. If McLaurin was playing. So some team that needed a second or third option, it might have made sense.

But we got him for a 5th. I don’t think his value increased since the off season, candidly. So, most likely offers for him weren’t more than we gave up, and if it wasn’t more, is it really worth it?

Angry tonight bro?

Why wouldn't his value have increased since the offseason? Have you seen his stats the second half of last year? They were absolutely terrible and he was out of shape. He's absolutely played better this year vs last year and he is in shape this year. Front offices got to see earlier in the year what he is able to do if he gets to play alongside not even stars but other competent receivers. Add in that you get more compensation at the trade deadline because you don't have the alternative of free agents to pursue and because you have clearer direction of whether you are in the hunt or not. Finally, you can choose to shoulder the load of his salary and let the team trading for him take a minimal piece of the salary

Using your logic, what has Meyers showed this season that should have garnered a 4th & a 6th? He had three good weeks to start the year, has not done much since and has been disgruntled. He's been easy for opposing teams to neutralize while Bowers has been out. Deebo has clearly outplayed him on the whole this season, especially when you factor in that he has been the league's best kickoff return man when he has gotten the chances and in the running game

Perhaps, that Meyers is two years younger, has less of an injury history (could be wrong on this,) and feels like a safer bet?

You may be right. I think a 4 and a 6 should not have been out of the ballpark for a Deebo trade. On the other hand, just a few weeks ago, SF settled for a 5 which likely means they couldn't find a better offer. After all, our 5 was practically a 6 given where we were projected to draft. Is Deebo that much better a prospect today than he was back during the offseason?

Would you really give up a 4 and a 6 for eight games? I believe Deebo's contract is up at the end of this year. So, you'd have to want to give up a 4 and a six and almost immediately turnaround and sign him to a cap heavy deal. Are you doing that for a about to be 30 year old receiver with a long injury history?

He has 42 recantations for 367 yards over 9 games. And he missed a game.

Those are not standout numbers. He’s a complementary WR who is great at YAC but doesn’t really stretch the field and can’t really beat man coverage.

He hasn’t done anything to really demand higher than what we got for him. About the only thing is he clearly isn’t fat or out of shape.

His value was placed at a 5th in the off season.

Also, he’s an 8 game rental because he’s going to be an UFA at the end of the season.

Here’s the thing: if I can come up with that argument for no more than a 5th, literally 31 other GMs would be able to do the same and probably a stronger argument.

About a 5th is probably what was offered. If anything was offfered. I wouldn’t have done it for less than a 5th. For a 5th? Maybe? But I’m not sure.

The truth is the front office, coaching staff and we the fans overrated what a number of aging players had left in the tank for 2025 given what they did in 2024.

That's at the heart of this. It was a feel good story to bring Ertz, Wagner, McLaurin and a host of others back but the reality is this team won a number of games last year with Daniels poise and smoke and mirrors on defense.

This team was not a solid 12-5 team. It was a team that could have been 7-10 as easily as 12-5.

We doubled down on 2024 by going out and trading for the soon to be 30 year old Deebo who has a lengthy injury history and signing players like 36 year old Von Miller who should be retired.

We need to move forward with YOUNGER players and unfortunately that means taking what now looks to be high draft picks in 2026 and combine them with a strategy in free agency and other acquisitions to upgrade the speed on this team.

The other factor here is recognizing that we have received almost nothing from Ben Sinnott and some other players we brought on board and harshly evaluate their futures here.

Yes, Sinnott is only 25 but the question isn't youth it's one of whether with a glaring need for a receiving TE that can go down the field, why #82 hasn't even started to peek his head out from under the rock and show up for this team on Sundays.

We need youth, but we also need youth with true upside for the NFL game.

I can deal with younger players at WR or TE that show flashes of big play potential but have to refine their route running or consistency.

But Sinnott can't get on the field and make any meaningful plays.

To add to what you said, Bulldog:
Annual/repeat winners are almost never built on QBs who scramble a lot for first downs in key situations. Why? It's because that is one of the easiest things to prevent in the future, for a variety of reasons. There is injury risk, defensive adaptation, ... the list is quite long.

That was probably a huge red flag from last year. Daniels ran for 800+ yards last year. Scrambles accounted for just under 600 of those. That's a pretty big percentage. I don't have the numbers on big third down scrambles, but yes, there were plenty (I'm sure we all remember).

Perpetual winners just don't get built that way; in my opinion, we need a much better scheme that can win consistently without relying on Daniels to scramble for us to get 1st downs in a consistent way. That feature from last year was true fools' gold. I hoped that Daniels (and Kingbury) reported prep and film study would make the difference. I did recognize that risk but I really thought they would find a way to adapt to those problems as they came, maybe it would take a game or two though. After the last 3 games, I am unsure that is going to happen (I know Daniels is out, but Kingsbury obviously is still there to figure something out).

If Mariota looks better, I won't be one who says "Daniels was having trouble and Mariota is better" - it may be that Kingsbury figured something out this week and changed something up. I'm hoping for that, because it means our QB situation is still solid and our OC still has good potential (although I am still not a fan of his philosophy).
