Burner's Burning Questions: Offseason Edition, Free Agency 2014

Everything I've seen about this story leads me to believe that the Eagles did not try to restructure his contract. That screams to me that the $12+ cap hit wasn't the only reason they were parting ways. Jackson all along publicly said he wasn't going anywhere, so this says to me that the Eagles are the ones who decided to end the contract. I haven't seen anything to lead me to believe the Eagles made ANY effort to keep him here, and that is enough to tell me that he's probably not worth our time.
 
Burner’s Burning Questions – Offseason Edition, Free Agency 2014, Part Eight​

The free agency period for the Redskins in 2014 has been atypical to say the least. Armed with a substantial amount of cap room a few weeks ago, many football pundits thought Bruce Allen would open the bank and bring in a few prized free agents. Restraint has been the modus operandi at Redskins Park as the team pursues a low key method of rebuilding the roster. Several veterans were released a few weeks ago and players added via free agency would suggest that the team is focusing on improving the abysmal special teams play of 2013.

The latest free agent to visit Redskins Park will be DeSean Jackson. BBQ has a neutral stance on the newly released wide receiver and has every confidence in this Redskins staff to make informed choices. If Jackson is signed or not signed, BBQ firmly believes that the homework done will justify whatever decision is made.

This will be last formal free agency update by BBQ for 2014. Minor updates will come when warranted. Feel free to discuss new additions and possible signings as we continue to debate the nuances of each player.

Many of these players are mostly longshots and while some will make the opening day roster, others will fight for a practice squad designation or try to impress other teams.

After reading one thread in the forum, BBQ fully agrees with the idea of extending Trent Williams now. It could save several millions of dollars this year and next with the cap.

It depends on the age, I suppose. Jackson is only 27? Lots of returners absolutely shredded at that age, and still started at their original positions.

Darrell Green and Deion of course come to mind.

Devin Hester took one back against us at the age of 32 just last season. He was never a great WR though.

Dante Hall from the Chiefs was also unstoppable for many years.

Josh Cribbs is another. He's 31 years old. He's not what he once was, but he was an animal at 27-29 years old.

Mcrapp was overrated, physically done and had issues in the lockerroom, about the only thing where you could have argued upside was that he was not a "bad character guy" and hadnt gotten in trouble with the law.

I dont really worry too much about why other teams wont sign this kid, hes a WR and we all know WR are usually the biggest prima donnas on any team. which is why you sign him to a good deal, but have escape clauses for bad behaviour. we are not in a position to be fussy when the ability to sign a probowler with upside and youth falls to you, you pull the trigger. period.
 
I have no interest in Britt at all. Not only does he have baggage but he is coming off a knee injury that has lead to declining production.

At least with Jackson he can go out and play.

I am not in love with either guy but when I look at Britt I see Hankerson with issues.

He has lost speed and is now likely a possession receiver.
 
Mitchell was never a feature back.

Let's get the train back on the tracks - Jackson is being considered because of what he can do at the line of scrimmage not as a returner.

If he signs here I would not put him on returns, not for that kind of money.

And chance his health?

I'm really happy with Clark signing. He may be on the downside of his career, but he does fill a key slot for now and I'm going to bank on the intangibles. I feel like if he's here for just the one year, at least he's buying us that year for that position......and, he'll also help mentor the youngsters we already have in place. It's a win-win.
 
Ok, so the FS and SS spots are signed with vets for 2014.

We need to ensure Thomas/Rambo or 2014 pick is ready to start in 2015.
 
Wonder if we're going to move on from Rambo or if maybe Thomas isn't fully recovered? Seems like we've got an awful lot of secondary guys on the roster... and I'd be surprised if we brought Clark back just to 'mentor' (he's not even familiar with Haslett's scheme - assuming we have a scheme :)).
 
We only have four safeties signed right now with the addition of Clark.

Clark and Meriweather with Thomas and Rambo as reserves.

We are going to add 2-3 more safeties for camp.

If the team signs Jackson it could be FS or RT with that pick at 34.
 
God - I hope it's a RT!
 
Can't help but wonder if the Texans releasing Danieal Manning had anything to do with Clark suddenly deciding to accept our offer.
