Burner's Burning Questions: Offseason Edition, Free Agency 2014

I'm not JUST interested in winning. Taking a chance on an injured player and bringing in a morally bankrupt thug aren't synonymous.

I don't know if Snyder is pushing for this guy but you certainly seem to be. Pass.

I have mixed feelings, Boone. Mostly because the idea of taking a WR in the second, for a fraction of the cost really appeals to me. Especially this year.

However, if we do sign Jackson, we could then use all of our picks on linemen and DBs. We would also fix our ST problems quickly.

As far as his character goes, I'm not convinced that he's a total thug. He's been arrested for pot one time. The LAPD has come out and said he hasn't had any involvement with gangs.

I need to go back and read all of the stories about him.....I haven't read them all yet.

I do know several of our players are begging for him.

There's a LOT more about this guy to be concerned about than one traffic arrest. If you aren't aware of that, you need to read up. Or buzz the Eagles front office. I could care less what 'the players' want. The players don't call the shots and if player input is driving ANY of our decisions, we're doomed to begin with.

You're making the talent argument. That's not disputable. But it's not all that matters.

That article you just posted certainly isn't a good look for him.

I don't like to hear that KC is out.

KC did due diligence, and passed on him. That's a huge red flag imho.

With that said, it's starting to sound like we are the clear front-runners. A source close to Desean now says he wants to play with the Skins, and several players from D Hall to Niles Paul are vocally campaigning for him.

I'm starting to lean against it.
It's starting to sound just a little similar to us aquiring McNabb.
The Eagles seem to have a pretty good idea when a player is no longer any good for them.
They knew it with McNabb. And we paid the price.
What if they also see the decline in Jackson ( even if it's just a character decline, and not a talent decline) ?
I don't want another McNabb, who was deemed as done, in the wise eyes of his Eagle predecessors.

I'm freely admitting here that I really know nothing about Jackson except for what I've seen him do on the field. What did he do that has you guys so opposed to him? I tried to google it, but I keep getting articles about his current situation.

Read post #800 in this thread for starters.

It's a mixture of that, and other things. Like throwing up gang signs during football games.

It's not so much that he's committed crimes, but that he hangs around people who have.

I don't know, but I think the team should at least look into it, which apparently they are. To me, he looks like a kid who grew up hard, and then was really lost when his dad died. Young player, grew up hard, suddenly has tons of money, dad dies...not hard to imagine him making some bad decisions.

Maybe this experience with the Eagles will be just the reality check he needs to get on track. If Jackson was missing meetings and not dedicated to his craft, and still had that production, I wonder how good he could be if he actually got focused.

I remember in 2000 when everyone was calling Ray Lewis a murderer. There seem to be a lot of players supporting Jackson on this.

I'm going to cry if we sign Douche-an Jackson. After I throw something.

I don't care how much talent someone has, when they have an extensive history of bad character traits they negatively impact the dynamic of the team. I like the good, solid-character, non-controversial (for the most part) leaders we have on our team currently. Building a team around character is always the direction I prefer the teams I root for and the teams I coach, to take.

Unless he's had a serious come-to-Jesus revelation about his attitude, behavior, maturity, etc. in the last two weeks that I'm unaware of, just say NO, Gruden!

I'll take him in the WR Flex position on my Fantasy Football team though

I'm on the fence on this one. I understand the concerns, even though, IMO, some of it seems kinda close to "guilt by association" or a reconfiguration of "conviction by circumstantial evidence" I agree with the nature of his recent behavior being a concern.

I also see why Gruden would take a shot based on the immediate upgrade he would be. If Jay G. believes he can corral or subdue the behavior I'd at least give Gruden the leeway to give it a try, with the caveat that if it looks to be un-doable that the experiment have a termination boundary.

People can and do change-and he hasn't done anything overt enough to be dismissed out-of-hand as unacceptable without recourse.

We're building a football team not a Boy Scout troop.

a couple things
1- no he isnt a S or a G, but he is a pro bowl calibre player that wont cost any draft picks and as long as we dont sell the farm for him, its a no brainer. we upgrade the WR corps and then we can spend draft picks on Oline and linebacker and secondary.

2- I read a couple years ago that gang affiliations are endemic in the NFL, gee a huge number of 5 star athletes come from backgrounds of poverty in the inner city, never saw that coming, but at least Desean keeps it somewhat on the downlow, the only reason this is such a big deal to some people, is hernandez.

3- if we can get him with a deal that is heavily backloaded with performance kicks based on behaviour, then we do it and we dont even think twice.

serv is right, this is not a boy scout troop, hes young, hes talented and hes not on the decline physically the way mcrapp is. in the right scheme, he will make Garcon better, as long as they dont fight (wr's tend to be prima donna headcases)

There are so many ways for me to say this:

How many times over the last decade have we been seduced by talent? How many times have we drooled in March and April over our newly acquired talent level that was going to blow the top off our season? I get the easy comparison is McNabb, and there's a lot of truth to that. I hate them, but the Eagles are a smart organization, with the ability to keep this kid in the fold. And they've just said, "Pass". That and that alone should raise red flags. When you add in all the off the field stuff, the attitude problems, it's a no brainer to me.

Say what you will, but Chip Kelly isn't an idiot. Everyone talks about fast, right. Is there anyone faster than DeSean? Anyone? But Kelly is kicking him out? Don't get seduced by talent. Just say no.

Here's what I've learned from several hours, reading many different beat writers and sources on the internet in the last 24 hours. Hopefully it will be helpful to those who don't have the time:

1. We can't offer him a one year deal. For two reasons. We can't fit him under the cap that way, and secondly, because the Raiders will guarantee him three years. If we really want him, we have to step up to the plate.

2. Supporters of the move suggest that Jackson hated Andy Reid, and that Desean turned KC down, and not the other way. That's already reported to be incorrect. Andy Reid told Philly weeks ago that he wasn't interested. And KC needs a WR badly.

3. Those same supporters are trying to convince themselves and others that Desean also hated Chip Kelly. After his career-best season as a WR? Two coaches, two problems. But everything will be great with his third coach?

That's a pretty big stretch to believe.

I'm still in the middle, but wonder if we are about to get punked by Andy Reid for a second time.

You wrote at length about how stupid we were to take Andy Reid's trash, by signing McNabb. That we obviously should have known better.

Does the fact that KC, who needs a WR badly, has no interest at all in D-Jax concern you?

Why wouldn't Andy Reid rush to sign him? They can afford him too.
