Burner's Burning Questions: Offseason Edition, Free Agency 2014

I'm watching the FSU pro day. I've yet to see anyone wearing Skins gear yet although reps from every team are reported to be there. I have seen Chip Kelly, Mike Tomlin, the Ryan brothers, among others.

how cool is that!

how does the FSU safety look? (can't remember his name)

I'm not actually at the event, I'm watching it on ESPN3. Joyner looks great except he dropped a ball. Brooks looks really good. A sleeper for us could be Kenny Shaw, who wasn't invited to the combine and should be a late round or UDFA. 5'11 174, quick, fast, great hands and tough as nails. I'd love to see him in the slot.

thanks! receivers eh?!

The truth is even when the team was throwing around money in FA we weren't for the most part getting elite talent. We were overpaying for good but oftentimes overrated players.

Randle El? Archuleta? Philip Daniels? Renaldo Wynn? Shawn Springs?

Going back further we have the over the hill gang of Deion, Bruce Smith, etc.

Haynesworth was the one guy coming off an all pro year and who was in his prime.

Unfortunately we didn't research the player beyond that to find out why TN didn't want to sign him long-term.

How many 27 year old all pro DTs do teams allow to depart?

No, I think the Redskins have been cautious for a reason.

This team has a lot of holes and if we brought in one or two big name players and they got hurt or didn't play well here we would be little better than a last place team again.

We are not that close to contending, we are still trying to find guys we can win with.

Is it bad that I'm praying for a Kelvin Benjamin pot bust before the draft?

I completely get the love for Benjamin, but would you really want another player who is too stupid to not smoke up like that again?

I hate the lulls.

Can we get on with things already!?!

Bring on more free agents! Bring on the draft! Bring on training camp! Bring on preseason!! Bring on the opener!!

Sigh.....

Can we just put things back the way they were?

Free Agency March through mid-April and put the draft back in late April?

Tinker..tinker.tinker.....leave things alone!!

Looks like Penn is a Raider. Dang!

Drug problems are serious. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Nor do we need another player that smokes pot.

I was thinking more along the lines of Nobody dropping off his personal stash in Benjamin's car. Then immediately calling the police.

If that's not feasible, I'm okay with multiple speeding tickets/reckless driving, jaywalking or even a very minor domestic dispute. We need him.

The Broncos reportedly spent a lot of time with KB today.

Great.

Oakland is a mess. Players are only going there to get paid as they wind their careers down.

Sounds like DC several years ago.

Unfortunately it seems as if Tyler Polumbus and our wayward free agent Reed Doughty will be back for yet another campaign.

I'm fine with Reed coming back, who doesn't want an effort guy like that. Kid plays his ass off every down, good leadership too. Turn-Style I could do without.

This draft is deep in OL and WR.

So, I would not have overpaid the 31 year old Penn that much to bring him in.

Perhaps if he were 27 or 28 and was going to be here for those 3 additional prime years.

I hope we go OL and WR in the draft.

This draft is deep enough where I might consider trading say a 2015 second round pick for an additional #3 and #5 in 2014.

So, two weeks into FA, and what have we accomplished?

We've taken the worst ST unit in NFL history, and have made it average, or even slightly above-average quickly.

We've added a pass rushing monster on the D-line.

We've replaced Fletcher, actually, we've probably upgraded Fletcher based on his play last season. Plus our new LB excels at ST.

We've added the second best WR on the team in Roberts, giving RG3 another weapon.

We've brought in another CB to play the slot in case Minnifield or Crawford aren't ready to step up.

We've beefed up the lines with at least, bigger depth, and maybe a new starter on the OL.

Not bad for two weeks of execution.

Now just get us one more O-lineman, and maybe another WR for RG3, and let's get this ball in the air.

Agreed. Although I think those spots will be filled in the draft.

Jerry Reese has done a good job in free agency for the Giants.

Schwartz is a quality starter as is Cromartie. Thurmond was a plus add. Holliday could be the best return man in the league if he can hold onto the ball.

A starting lineman, plus a great WR in the draft, and I'd call this a successful rebuild for the first year. Very competent if they can pull it off.
