Burner's Burning Questions: Offseason Edition, Free Agency 2014

The fact none of the three Shanahan picks on the OL have been in discussions about the final makeup of the starting unit publicly I think is a sign Gruden and Co don't look at them as more than depth players.

Any conversation about the corners includes Amerson, Bruce was talking about Phillip Thomas coming back on Thursday re the safeties.

But on the OL all the action seems to be on visiting free agents.

Shanny's picked Trent... granted it was an easy pick to make, they did make that pick.

Given. I think we are all focusing now on draft picks in rounds where the best talent hounds find capable contributors.

Those 2-5 round picks are so key to buildings contender under the cap.

Sort of shocked to hear Bruce Allen describe this year's Redskin Free Agency effort as 'okay'. I'm not saying we didn't add some talent, because I believe we did add some, but damn Allen - your entire JOB is to ensure we do a lot better than 'okay'. And I'd have liked to have heard why you and your team weren't able to do better than 'okay'.

I'm not 'okay' with 'okay'.

I would imagine it's because it's a multi-year plan to build for the long run. What we all see as "okay" might be a completely different conversation then what's going on at the park. Maybe these guys are stop gaps and we are going to make a serious push to draft 4 new linemen over the next 2 drafts. Give the first 2 guys a year to learn, then draft 2 more in the 15' draft. Not saying this is what his plan is, but I have no idea what it is. If this does turn out to be the plan, I sure as heck wont hate that approach.

I'm on board with the multi-year plan, I think that's the only way it can be. I didn't like his tone and characterization of the 'effort' though. And while I recognize that we have to be able to field a 53 man team and therefore have to pick up players that may not realistically expected to be part of the long-term answer, I would rather we go after a couple of young guys who will be long-term Redskins starters, vs. 6 or 7 slightly average to above average guys who won't be.

no judgement since the prevailing opinion seems to be "let's wait and see how it plays out."

it is obvious, however, that the signings did not square with the priorities in the original plan.

so, we'll learn in time how agile the FO is in conceiving alternative paths forward.

The Eagles will cut Desean Jackson if they can't find a trade partner.

He just had his best season ever, and he's only 27 years old.

If we could land him for no picks, and something like $4 million a year, would you?

I'd imagine part of it is that players like Mike Mitchell and Penn going elsewhere. I would assume there were contingency plans, but we also cant make the assumption that the majority of guys are going to prefer to play here for an equivalent contract offered up by another team.

Sure.

I'd like Van Halen to play at my birthday party too. And maybe a pony while we're at it.

such a tough one.... he helps out in the return game, and he can be your gamebreaker, but given his size, how much longer is he going to perform at this level? He's not built to be a guy who plays well into his 30s (but there are exceptions). I would be a little excited if he came, but I'm also not going to be upset if we don't sign him... I can see how he could help, and I can also see how that money can be better spent.

I like the approach.

Gibbs, Parcells, Bellichick never came out in the offseason hyping their teams.

So Allen is not over at Olives breaking out a cigar and talking about making the SB.

It's a nice change from the past 10-11 years.

He's a three-time pro-bowler, just entering his prime, who would be playing with a big chip on his shoulder. He's not built to be a primary WR, but if you put him on the other side of Garcon we suddenly have the best WR corps in the division. By miles. Im not saying I'd break the bank for the guy, but if you can get him for 4 mil a year and no picks? Thats less than we payed for Josh Morgan. You take that in a second. Its not gonna happen though.

We added Roberts,which helps IMO.

Now, if we can get Reed to stay healthy and get RG3's head screwed back on straight....about the only thing holding this unit up is the protection up front.

Contrary to popular belief, we do have some talent in the skill positions here. Just need some fat boys up front so that the fanbase can see it.

for less then $4 mil a year, yeah i'd really have to consider it... like I said, i'm not saying i'm for or against. I can see both sides of it.

Less than $4M on the first and perhaps second years of a multiyear contract :)

He's got the speed and the skill but I just never liked his attitude. I dont see his character being solid enough to trade with a rival for and that leads me to not wanting to get caught in a bidding war over him either .

Vick had great success running around then chucking it downfield to this kid, I would think he would fit in THAT way well. These guys all seem to scale back their ST contributions in their second contract. But he would dominate philly every game for letting him go.

So there pros and cons here. Personally, I'd like to see us get bigger in the wr corps and I'm not a fan of Desean Jackson the human being....so I'd say no but hope he goes somewhere out of the division cause the kid gets open a lot.

you're right. I'm just saying that...from where I sit....reading what has been revealed thus far...the Skins had a plan, at the higher end they went after the sort of folks/positions we all knew were the priorities, and did not land what they wanted. lotta factors involved. so, this forces them to adapt. I think free agency addressed some depth issues, landed one quality player for the d-line, added 2 other starters who will contribute. but they know they have some outstanding holes - for the starting units - they were not able to address on this round.

it's behind us. time to press on to the next stage.

good post. I wrestle (in the case of jackson) between size and speed. the latter can substitute for size. they won't go after him IMO due to the cost.

Yeah and I'm ok with that!
