Burner's Burning Questions: Free Agency, The Mock Drafts, 2015 (Continual Updates)

Ooh wee! Now that is a highlight reel!!

Boone - Jones ran a 4.55 at his pro day, that's acceptable range for a guy that goes 6'2 and 231 and figures to be an OT-OT rusher.

I didn't mean to imply he's slow, or a terrible pick. But he's got some pluses and weaknesses, which I guess is what you expect to find at the end of the 3rd round. My only beef is where we took him. I do think it's curious (as you alluded to) that we picked up a back whose style looks a lot like the 2 we've already got on the roster.

I will confess he looks a lot better on tape than some of his draft profiles give him credit for...Pretty powerful kid...

I think the big difference is the blocking and special teams play. We currently have 3 running backs and I'm not fully sold on 2 of them. I like having competition in every position and keeping the defense from having a free shot at Robert is something I approve of.

Well, I don't hear anyone chirping about BPA being a lie today :) Because you don't pick up a lower rated RB who is at a position we are pretty strong in UNLESS you think he's special.

BB - on your description of Matt Jones.... He's not particularly fast, almost every scouting report I've read says he isn't an instinctive runner and tends to plow straight ahead (ie...isn't gifted at finding the hole or seam). He also has a fumbling history, and has already had at least one meniscus surgery. Some scouting reports say he has good hands, but he wasn't asked to catch passes much at Florida, so I think saying he's a superb receiver is hard to support. By all accounts, he is big, strong, tenacious, and a hard runner. That's all I'm willing to say on the positive side. I still think it's a curious pick, not because we don't need a RB, but because he was projected more as a 4th, 5th, or 6th rounder.

Boone...I was thinking the same thing. I thought the Skins were gonna draft a RB...but the controlling thought was a replacement for Helu - i.e., a speedster. I don't get the Jones pick. Maybe they feel this is the year Thompson gets thru getting out of the shower without incurring an injury. If this is all about pass blocking....ok I guess.

I think the Jones pick signals that Scot doesn't believe Silas Redd is a realistic solution as the #2 to Morris in the Gruden offense.

Matt Jones, aka:

The Reaper
Punch
Dragoon
The Deputy (since we have a Scherff)

interesting angle BT. I didn't think of it that way. based on what criteria?

Chirping? You calling me a bird, mate?!! I'm a man...all man! I roar and fart and drink beer!!

But honestly, I think Scot has been going BPA for what we need most. Just my homer vision I suppose but I also think he knows what he's doing.

I'd give the audio track to the video a second thought. perhaps not appropriate?

I ran is not appropriate for a running back?

You prefer some Celine Dion perhaps? Some nickelback?

N-word, some other questionable language. all depends on who ya think is looking at this blog (member, anon).

btw...like your thoughts on why they drafted Jones. makes more sense. I was also tripped up by the 4.6 combine 40 but it loks like he ran a 4.5 at his pro day.

At least half of highlight audio tracks are inappropriate raps. Not a rap fan so I just kill the audio although I have to say, that I Ran "song" was kinda catchy.

well...I don't like the N-word. if others are comfortable with it and associating it to Jones...I'm not here to impose my values - just share them. that word should either be in or out in all cases...not case by case. anywho.....back to football.

Those doggone hip hoppers with their urban slang.

It's not the N word. But I'm not gonna continue on this.

Okay, how about a few more O-linemen, a FS, maybe the next Richard Sherman and Rashad Greene.

Edit: And that TE would help too.

I didn't mention speed in the description, but he has plenty of it. No, I didn't mention fumbling history. No, I didn't mention the injury history. Or the fact that he is a one cut runner. I'll let the videos posted (including the one that I put up) speak for themselves.

If you want me to, I can post some of the negatives for prospects starting next year. It increases the workload, but hey...

I post mostly the positive and let our members do the rest of the research if they are so inclined. In other words, you took the initiative to find out more about Mr. Jones. That is part of why I do these mocks - gets us talking and looking at what the team may do and provide interest in players already taken.

Hope that explains it.

I wouldn't know a rap artist from a roll of Reynolds Wrap. So I gave everyone likes.

I like to talk about football in here. :)

I wasn't digging on you, just giving the less rosy draft profile points I've seen. Ultimately, we'll see what we have down the road. No reason to seriously question the pick in advance of seeing what he can actually do on the field.

BB, an alternate to Tre Jackson might be his linemate Josie Matias. Another possibility is slot corner Ifo Ekpre-Olamu. Also, I see Max Garcia going earlier than the 6th round because of his high character. Just my two pennies.
