Burner’s Burning Questions – The Mock Draft (Continual Updates)

Actually, Bucky Brooks had us taking Robert Alford in Round 2 and Oday Aboushi in the 3rd. Daniel Jeremiah has us taking Bostic in the 2nd and Duke Williams in the 3rd.

This seems a round too high for both Bostic and Williams according to most of the mocks however, I saw Florida lose to Louisville in the Sugar Bowl and Bostic was a tackling machine. I guess it depends where our FO has these guys rated but I wouldn't be disappointed if this came to pass.
 
I have a question for you BB, one I'm sure you've answered before:

Where do you get all of your information (in the general sense)? Are you just a big college football fan or are you reading this stuff through magazines, websites, etc, and just aggregating the information? Is it part of your job or an industry you're in?

I just can't fathom having that big of a grasp on college football players.

No offense to BB or Bucky Brooks, but I certainly hope we avoid Oday Aboushi at all costs, unless its in the 5th round or higher. Dude got absolutely abused at the Senior Bowl, and it wasn't like he was dominating in the ACC during the regular season. I don't see him as a regular contributor at the NFL level, and think it would be a wasted draft pick.

I don't think I have answered this question before, but thanks for asking.

I usually start in mid October with videos of potential prospects and scouting reports from about twenty sites. I start to compile the information each week until the offseason arrives. At that point, I have a decent database of players that may fit team needs.

The other thing I've done is go back about twenty years and take a look at Mike Shanahan-specific drafts to get an idea of how he may draft in the future - again, based on current team needs.

There are four sites where I am something of an informal advisor for Redskins needs and wants as it pertains to the draft and free agency. Occasionally, I will get an email from a site owner or contributor and we bounce ideas off of one another. It is not a job, just a fun way to bring some information through BBQ to the fans here. It's a labor of love and a hobby that is sheer fun.
 
So....basically you're as informed as any other draftnik out there, and have as good a chance as the McShays, Kipers, etc. of the world as predicting what we'll do! Love your contributions, BB - keep up the good work! If only Boone was paying you what Mel makes, right? LOL
 
That's pretty much the best way to describe it - without the pay too, lol.

Loved your mock - I have taken a look at all of those players and could include any of them at some point. I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them on the roster this season.

As for Oday - and I'm trying not to be a UVA homer here - but I have us taking him in the fifth. He won't go higher unless some team out there is desperate. He is not a fit for a pocket passing, power running scheme. However, he could do well in a ZBS on the right side and that is why I have us taking him in the fifth. It's the same reason I had us taking Donald Stephenson last year in the third round, but we took Rib instead (good choice imho).

Zack Ertz - yeah, if he is there at our pick in the second, pull the trigger. No debate on that one.

I can almost guarantee that Blidi Wreh-Wilson will be in one of the future mocks - depending on what happens with Winfield and Josh Wilson.

Could be a good fit - Shanahan likes high-character guys, and staying at Stanford an extra year certainly fits that bill. I think he'll be gone in the first round though, unfortunately. NFL.com compares him to Jason Witten, but reading his profile he sounds a lot like Cooley to me (EDIT: except for the injury thing):

Nice job adding bulk to his frame, but needs to continue to develop his strength to sustain blocks at the line of scrimmage. Will round off some routes at times and needs to better control himself in/out of his breaks. Needs to do a better job coming down with contested throws and will drop some easy ones – seems to have at least one drop each game.

Ha, thanks - not nearly as much prep goes into it as yours, I just like to do mock drafts as well. :)
 
Got it. I figured that is what it was, but couldn't help but wonder if you had some connection to the scene via work or something.

Certainly appreciate all the effort you put into it - that goes to others that participate as well. It certainly seems like you've done your, erm, homework ;)
 
I'd like to chime in on the thanks, BB. Your intensive work with not only the draft but FAs has proven to be invaluable. You have saved me a ton of digging around in trying to figure out the possible options for the Redskins to pursue.

Burner’s Burning Questions – The Mock Draft, Part Five (Continual Updates)

Like last year, BBQ will do a series of mock drafts and will provide continual updates based on team needs, free agency additions/losses, and injuries. This is the fifth mock of the new season and it will be updated twice a week for now. The frequency of mocks will increase as we get closer to the draft and it will be a daily feature in the final week. Feel free to add your own ideas and mocks as we go along.

Team needs are S, CB, RT, TE, and DL. Some of these issues could be settled (somewhat) in free agency, but we will address those potential signings in future mocks.

Round 2:
Trade – The Redskins have signed most of their own players in free agency and several others. One area of particular need is free safety and the Redskins must draft a player who can make an immediate impact. The Redskins trade up higher in the second round and give up their fourth and seventh rounder.

Round 2:
Johnathan Cyprien – Free Safety, Florida International
Considered to be one of the top five free safeties in the draft, Cyprien has an all-around skillset and size to succeed.

Round 3:
The Redskins trade down to the fourth round and pick up an early fifth rounder in the process.

Round 4:
Terry Hawthorne – Cornerback, Illinois
Hawthorne has good size and quickness for a CB and is very physical. His performance in the Shrine game boosted his stock.

Round 5:
Oday Aboushi – Offensive Tackle, Virginia
Aboushi is not a highly rated prospect, but he has the ability and speed to play quite well in a zone blocking scheme.

Round 5:
Stefphon Jefferson – Running Back, Nevada
We don’t need a running back? Ok, that’s fine, but Mike Shanahan has this uncanny habit of finding hidden gems at this position and Jefferson fits the bill. Many scouts are calling him this year’s Alfred Morris. Jefferson’s offense ran the pistol and he had a great year. Enough said.

Round 5:
Joseph Fauria – Tight End, UCLA
Fauria had a great senior season and is an excellent red zone target with his height and athleticism. He needs to improve his blocking skills, but his size is an asset in the passing game.

Round 6:
Montori Hughes – Defensive Tackle, Tennessee-Martin
Hughes comes from a small school, but could have a big impact at the next level. His stats are impressive and he had a very impressive 2012 campaign.

Nice work and I love the ballsy trades! This is one season where I think creative options will have a higher likelihood than in other seasons.

BB, while I agree 100% that we'd have to move up to get Cyprien, I'm hearing that the Niners have their eyes on him as well and with all of their picks, I would imagine they'd be able to beat out any offer we could make to move up. I even saw one mock that had the Niners taking him at the end of the first round.

My biggest question for you is, IF the Skins were able to move up to get Cyprien or even Reid, how confident are you that they could recoup those picks by trading down with that 3rd rounder? I love the moves in theory but moving up could be a huge gamble if they can't find a trading partner to move back down. Other teams would know we need picks because of the cap hit and would likely try to take advantage of us in the draft trade chart.

Right now, there are a lot of mocks that have Cyprien going anywhere from late in the first to late in the second. If he goes late in the first, then two safeties went earlier in the first and I don't see that happening - there is no safety that is worth a top twenty pick in this draft. Of course, all it takes is one team to blow that theory out the window. My best guess is that Cyprien goes around pick 10 to 17 in the second round.

Teams are always looking to move up or down and the GMs usually get the word out well before the draft. Sure, some of it is spur of the moment, but many of these moves are planned before the draft. So a move in the third round is not unusual - the Redskins made such a move just last year.

As for teams taking advantage of us - that is highly unlikely. Bruce Allen is a shrewd operator - look at how he stole Carriker from the Rams. Look at the draft classes that Shanahan/Allen have crafted since they have arrived. Coach Shanahan said that this is the best scouting department that he has ever seen in the league - obviously, Vinny rarely took their advice.

Not to worry. We're in good hands - just like Allstate (eh, I have and like Geico).
 
I like the idea of trading up in the second round.

Given our limited cap space i am not adverse to the idea of trading to get better/more picks for next year.

Oh nice! Looks like safety is their number one concern.

Not speaking specifically to their ability to judge talent and select players, but at least our staff isn't blind to what the weaknesses of the team are and where talent needs to be acquired.
 
This team is still building. I would trade down in Round 2 if someone falls in love with a player. We could use an extra pick in early in Round 3 and a pick in Round 4 to double up our mid-rounders.
