BGO Blind Pig - MOCK DRAFT EDITION!!

It seems like in the old debate of need vs BPA, the Commanders are drafting for need. Sticking to a WR in round 1. Taking a DT in round 2 because you know you are getting rid of Payne soon. This is why I prefer more of a BPA draft. Just keep getting talent, it’s what the best teams do.

I agree with you, Kel. The fact is that we have spent day two picks on rotational players. To me, it screams that the front office is a lot higher on what is already in place than we are. Let's hope they are correct.

It's a double need pick. It's about replacing Payne this year and rallying to replace all the DT depth we've lost because we cut Ion and let Settle go. The team turned a team strength into what was about to be a glaring weakness. It reads like Phiddy might be a good run stuffing, tough nose though even he and his agent said the pick was a reach. The question is really was this a problem we had to have?


Been thinking about the DT situation. Many of us, including me, thought it was a mistake to cut Ion and lose Settle, too. The consensus seems to be that we needed to resign Settle on the cheap (which is what he signed elsewhere for) to keep the rotation. This morning the thought occured to me, "What if that wasn't possible?"

What if Settle sees himself as a starter and thinks he could never get a shot to fill that role in Washington? What if other teams offered him the chance to compete for a starting position and that was just really more attractive? If so, the story changes. Then, the question becomes if they knew that it was really unlikely that we could get Settle back should we have cut Ion for the cap savings? And I think the answer there is trickier because this coaching staff has never seen good Ion and he was cap expensive. Still, the situation reeks of bad planning and led directly to this draft pick which feels sketchy. But I do wonder if Settle's departure is less about Washington blowing it than it is about Settle wanting to be elsewhere.

I agree with your post though... and to take it a step further... We've invested 4 first round picks in the front 4 and it's STILL been consistently in the bottom half of the league rankings.... I don't think it's a coincidence that when we saw players like Wise, Smith-Williams, Bradley-King, and Toney getting meaningful minutes, the unit played better.

It's entirely possible that the coaches see what we heard reported, that on regular occasion, players were playing outside of their responsibilities. Maybe it was time to turn over that unit a little bit.

My frustration wasn't witht he Mathis pick, it's that we didnt hear of a trade for Payne in the following minutes. IMHO, you don't take Mathis without a deal in place for Payne that includes a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Adding ANOTHER pick last night would have changed the feel of it

I'm starting to get the feeling that with Payne, we're going to lose yet another talented player, with no trade compensation. And drafted in the 1st Round, to top it all off.
This pattern is becoming a bad trend.
 
What does Payne command now? A third, we've just signaled he's not long term, completely agree ST what in the holy hand grenade are we doing as far as strategy.
 
According to Bleacher Report, the pro comparison for Percy Butler is Darrick Forrest. I found that interesting, especially since we haven't seen much of Forrest yet.

Again, as has been the case with all our picks so far, I have mixed feelings. I understand them, while not being super crazy about them either.

Not knowing too much about Percy Butler, my initial reaction after hearing he will be a special teams factor right away is that he is Deshazor's replacement in that area of our roster.
 
I like the Butler pick. Blazing fast and a big hitter, standout gunner on Special Teams, forces a lot of fumbles. His pass pro skills are his weak spot and he supposedly does too much arm tackling, but those things can be coached up.
 
I think they may go after OL just because there tend to be high quality guys still available late but who knows?
 
That's it. Next year in the BGO Draft Pool, I am not picking anybody who the team met with. Instead, I am sticking with seniors only.
