All things Bourbon

Well, I've been slumming for a week now, drinking a small amount, in a regular glass, of a Christmas gift of Knob's Creek #9, every evening. And will do so, until it's gone. I figure I need to get the old taste buds used to it, so when I move up in class, I'll be able to tell the difference.

Not going to the top of the class though. So, what's a recommended mid grade?

I'm not sure if it qualifies, but I absolutely love Blanton's and its reasonable in price. (Plus the bottles make a cool conversation piece)

I call this bourbon my starter bourbon. I give it to people that say they hate whiskey. It's 86.6 proof and very smooth. It's kind of a simple bourbon not very complex, but it runs around $50-$55 a bottle and can be found on sale cheaper.

Thank you sir.

If you were to categorize it, would it be low-mid, mid, upper-mid, etc...?

Not necessarily price wise, but quality wise.

Quality wise I have it a little above Jack Single Barrel, Bookers, Basil Haydens.

It's one of the better bourbons for the money you can buy. I'd say upper middle. The cheapest upper tier bourbon is Jeffersons Presidential 17/18 year old. A good price on that is about $94to $100 just to give you an idea. The difference is huge. And also believe it or not the BTAC collection is only $79 a bottle and the best bourbon ever. You just can't ever find it for sale at a store.

Did you ever try Woodford's Reserve? One of the places I found on a google search had it, and Pappy Van Winkle's 15 year as it's top two picks.

Edit: I see Lanky mentioned it earlier.

I've had Woodford Reserve Maple cask finished. Which is one of their yearly special experiments. Was not very impressed. Have not had regular Woodford.

Now pappy 15 I would LOVE to try have not seen it anywhere for under about $250 a bottle. No way I'm paying that when I could get Weller or Stagg for less. I have 5 bottles of Pappy 20 and it's very good. I'd compare it to the Jeffersons 17/18, but not as good as WLW, Stagg or ER17.

Anybody have a bourbon menu for the race tomorrow?

I'm going over to a friends our selection in tasting order is;

Either some Pappy 20 or Jeffersons 18 to start then
2012 ER17
2011 WLW
2009 George T Stagg

Gotta say Bob, your presence has been enjoyable around here... Great contributor!

That is a great list!! You spoil your friends!!

Hey, Are there any other good spots to find Stagg other than Dusty Bourbon (whom I am ordering that weller from next week btw)

He's supplying the WLW and Jeffersons. Stagg is very hard to get outside ok KY and even there it's tough.

Sampled the ER17, holy hell I'm in love! Haven't tried the Weller yet.

Were the two bottles in the right in the freezer?

Yep that's the best way to drink them.

All bourbons. Those were frozen because they were my friends and I went to his house so mine were not from the freezer.

I'm on an email list of a guy that sells the good bourbon. It is at a markup, but not unreasonable. He has a Vday special going on for bottles of the new 2012 William Larue Weller. It's top notch stuff and part of the BTAC collection. He is selling it for $130 a bottle shipping included, I picked up two. Plus he will ship it anywhere. I've ordered from him before and everything went great.

If any of you are interested in a bottle at this price shoot me a pm and I will give you his contact info. I know it doesn't sound like a great deal, but try and find this for sale on the net or anywhere.

Hey Bob...I'd like to buy a couple bottles of the best bourbon on your top list. Can you advise what you'd buy if you were looking for a couple of the best bourbons out there. I'm willing to spend, just not crazy money :)

The ER17 this year that this guy is selling is one of the best. The other top ones I don't really have a source to send you to, to buy them. Let me do some checking and ill see if I can dig anything up. I'll send you the email for the contact for the ER. 17 as soon as I get home.

Cool, thanks Bob, I appreciate it...
