All things Bourbon

Not enough bourbon to go round! Maker's Mark waters down its alcohol content by 3% so it can make more

-The bourbon will cut its alcohol content by three per cent, an email said
-Company said it came to the decision after 'looking at all possible solutions'
-Chief executives said the taste of the bourbon will remain the same

Distillers of a world famous bourbon has cut its alcohol content so it can meet increasing demand for the drink.

The owners of Maker's Mark, which is distilled Loretto, Kentucky, said they are unable to produce the bourbon fast enough.

The plans became public after an email from Maker's Mark executives Rob Samuels and Bill Samuels Jr, son of the company's founder, emerged.

It announced that the bourbon - which used the slogan 'It tastes expensive... and is' - will drop its alcohol content by there per cent.

It will now be reduced to 42 per cent ABV from 45 per cent.

In the email, which was sent to clients, the pair are quoted as saying that stores have been running out of Maker's Mark because the 'demand for our bourbon is exceeding our ability to make it, which means we're running very low on supply,' according to WFPL.

They said they had made the decision after 'looking at all possible solutions'.

Unacceptable Makers!!! If your bourbon was best at 42% you would have been making it at 42%.

The best bourbon follows Pappys ole saying.

Pappy Van Winkle said:
"We make fine bourbon. At a profit if we can, at a loss if we must. But always fine bourbon."

Buffalo trace has taken on this motto in their production of Pappy and the BTAC collection. They bottle it to the best taste and when they run out it is gone for the year.

I'm on an email list of a guy that sells the good bourbon. It is at a markup, but not unreasonable. He has a Vday special going on for bottles of the new 2012 William Larue Weller. It's top notch stuff and part of the BTAC collection. He is selling it for $130 a bottle shipping included, I picked up two. Plus he will ship it anywhere. I've ordered from him before and everything went great.

If any of you are interested in a bottle at this price shoot me a pm and I will give you his contact info. I know it doesn't sound like a great deal, but try and find this for sale on the net or anywhere.

Followed Bob's recommendations, and have a bottle of the Eagle Rare 17 & the William LaRue Weller heading my way. I'll be back with my report cards! I plan on sampling while smoking a cigar, my favorite time to drink whiskey. :)

Hope you find some, I'll be awaiting your review.

Since your drinking scotch you may have these already but if you don't get some Glenn Cairn glasses.

Glasses

I don't have the 'right' glasses. I have a set of nice glasses but they aren't snifter-style and designed to really cater to the aroma's of the drink.

Unfortunately I've been caught up in brewing beer, which is kind of pricey in terms of startup (although not bad compared to many hobbies), so I'll have to put all this on hold for a few months.

I will, however, be taking your advice and getting back to you on it.

I'm not a big scotch guy, and definitely not the peaty stuff. My favorite is The Balvenie 12 or 15 year though, one of the smoothest I've had. Probably mid-shelf, but still good!

HOF44 has my mind on these:

Got my bourbon! Can't wait to taste it!

Like!!

Does my heart good to see bourbon of this quality go to a good home. I've had people at the tailgate ask me to make them a bourbon and coke!!! They get slapped in the back of the head and sent to the bar.

When can we expect your review??? Oh and always start with the Eagle Rare, then move up to the Wellers for comparison.

And if you look in the bottom of the bottle of Weller you'll sometimes see the bits of charred barrel floating down there. Straight from the barrel, no filtering or cutting!

Also Lanky this is going to ruin most other bourbons for you.

Don's (SS's) Favorite Bourbon recipe

Step 1 - pour 1.5 oz of bourbon in a glass
Step 2 - add 5 more oz of bourbon to the same glass
Step 3 - drink
Repeat as necessary.

Stupid USPS is finally delivering my Glencairn glasses, 6 days later (2-3 Days priority shipping my behind). Should be tasting the bourbon tonight!

Damn lanky nice looking kitchen :)

Thanks! That's where the magic happens. LOL.

Well, I've been slumming for a week now, drinking a small amount, in a regular glass, of a Christmas gift of Knob's Creek #9, every evening. And will do so, until it's gone. I figure I need to get the old taste buds used to it, so when I move up in class, I'll be able to tell the difference.

Not going to the top of the class though. So, what's a recommended mid grade?

I call this bourbon my starter bourbon. I give it to people that say they hate whiskey. It's 86.6 proof and very smooth. It's kind of a simple bourbon not very complex, but it runs around $50-$55 a bottle and can be found on sale cheaper.

Here you go on sale for $39.98 SFWTC
