THAT is not where Washington is. This coaching staff knows the starters for the most part from 2024 and the systems are carryovers as well.

There was no need to go all out and try to win these games.

In fact we didn't even play our rookies like Conerly or Merritt that much.

I think the coaches and Peters did for Sam Hartman what was fair - he has worked hard for 2 years to put himself in position to be a candidate for a regular spot on the team and he simply failed to show that he was up to that challenge.

If Washington wanted to win these games we could have had Daniels play more or if Mariota was 100% we could have thrown him out there for extended action and won.

But that's of no value to anyone.

It’s not that we lost the preseason games that worries me, it’s that we got completely skunked and gave our starters practically zero game reps.

It’s true we were 0-3 in the 2024 preseason, but we didn’t get embarassed the way we did this year, and we also got off to a slow start, losing the opener by 17 and barely squeaking by the lowly Giants in week 2.

There’s some history of this with DQ. As a head coach of the Falcons and Commanders, he has gone 0-18 in his last five preseasons, and lost 5 out of 7 week 1 games. His last two years in Atlanta were especially bad: In 2019 they started 1-7, and in 2020 they started 0-5.

I tend to think there is a danger in treating the preseason like it’s BS, because you play how you practice, but hopefully you’re right that it’s meaningless.

Gibbs teams often had losing records in preseason. One 0-4 preseason previewed a team that won the Super Bowl that year.

There are some concerns. Primary in my mind are the following:

1. Finding a capable backup center with release of Dieter. Dieter was not above replacement quality and we suffered when he came in last year when Tyler missed time. We need to look and find among the 1,000 players released yesterday an interior lineman with significant experience at the center position. We addressed the depth at tackle with the signing of George Fant and that gives us 3 veterans with starting experience and a first round draft pick on board for 2025.

2. I would still like to see the team find a young rusher with some upside. This will be harder to find than #1 but there are some guys out there that may be worth taking a look at.

3. Kicker - I just don't trust Matt Gay. He's over 30 and had issues specifically converting longer field goals last year in Indy and that is what he has done in the preseason this year with no competition. A couple of younger, stronger legs have hit the market and even if going with a 23 year old is a bit of a gamble I don't see Gay as a make or break player at this point. We are still building here.

4. Wide receiver - we need another receiver to fill out the current room IMO although Peters seems very high on what Jaylin Lane can contribute in 2025.
 
We missed out on the Detroit kicker last year but this year there are 3 or 4 guys that seem to have upside in the league that have become available.
 
I saw him drop two balls in space. Does he warrant being brought back?
 
We will see if he has a real pair if he can move from the PS up to the regular roster :eclipsee-victoria:
 
Can someone tell me what happened with Austin Seibert? He was our best kicker in YEARS up until his injury and then he returns and obviously had the bad outing vs the Cowboys but was willing to cut him some slack coming back from injury. Where did he go? He didn’t MISS from inside the 50! I know there are a few freaks in the NFL now a days kicking but if we are going to abandon Austin, commit to one of these guys with a freak leg :lol: a kicker that could routinely hit one from 55-60 though would be a cheat code with Jayden. Hope we find one in the next season or two.

he got injured pretty early on, i'm pretty sure. am i in the "berenstein bears" alternate timeline? i didn't think he kicked enough to be considered that. if anything, in retrospect, joey slye might have been the best of the bunch.
 
Just really still don’t see the point of wasting a PS space on Hartman. Maybe the team thinks he’s still showing some effects of the injury? Need to use that space on someone with developmental potential.

He got a little heinicke status because of his 7 for 7 game against the giants but despite his statistical accuracy he had some pretty ugly kicks.
He hasn't been on a roster since i dont believe so either the hip injury is worse than thought or his wounded duck kicks put off a lot of teams.
 
Siebert did have a good year last year. 27-30 on field goals including 25 for 25 under 50 yards and 2 for 5 on 50 and over. He was 22 for 24 on Extra Points. That Dallas game was such a killer where he missed two extra points. But I was reasonably happy with a guy who lacked a big leg but was really good inside 50 yards.

As others pointed out, he was meh on kickoffs. Don't know how much that hurt him.

ahhh he played more than I thought. I thought Zane Gonzales played way more.
