2025 Washington Commanders- All Things Offense

I like a lot from what I’m seeing from this offense especially with the emergence of Luke and Lane. Going to be literally 4 deep at WR soon. And Conerly has been thrown to the wolves and will be all the better for it next season. Get Cosmi back and I really like the oline and our RB by committee approach. Would like to get a true burner back there for next season and a stud at TE to replace Ertz, but the offense has a chance to be really, really good when all cylinders are firing.
I think JCM is the burner you are looking for. But the young WRs have a long way to go to show they can be counted on week after week. Lane is a really important player as I believe he has more upside than McCaffery. But young WR often need time to learn how to run patterns at this level.

Time to start using Luke in the horizontal game. If he can consistently turn some screens and end arounds or jet sweeps into positive yards then maybe in a few games he can throw a few downfield since we know he was a quarterback

Yep specially with Deebo's heel injury, you have to be a bit more judicious with how to use him. Given Luke's kick returning and QB skills, they should absolutely use him more as a gadget guy.

Huh? What big group? It was always going to be Brown and a bunch of PS scraps. Good grief.

There's a guy name McCaffrey who's looked pretty good.. and Lane has flashed also.

I took him to mean a big group at X... Lane and McCaffrey play the other 2 spots.

fair point.. but then address the specific position and not the group? Might be my oversight.

I was listening to Galdi this morning, and he didn't provide a metric, but he said that the Bears stacked the box a lot and dared Jayden to beat them with his arm + a non-stellar group of receivers. Which he kindof did. Daniels was 19/26 for 211 yards and 3 TDs. That's 8.1 yards per attempt, 11.1 yards per completion and a 73% completion rate. 1 INT on passing plays, that's not great. But generally, we didn't lose because we didn't run the ball enough.

Comparatively, we had 31 carries for 124 yards, or 4 yards a carry. However, 10 of those carries were by Daniels. Bill had 17 carries for 61 yards, 3.6 average. Lane, McNichols and Samuels had 4 combined carries for 11 yards, though that's misleading because 7 of those yards were 1 carry on a carry by Lane. Basically, Bill was the running game, and it was "meh." Part of the reason was the Bears were keying on the run and forcing Daniels to beat them with a depleted WR corps. Which, again, he almost did.

But we made one more mistake than we could overcome.

For the "run the ball, then run some more" folks, if your opponent is stacking the box to stop the run, you don't run into that, you make them pay for it. Running into it would be a very Scott Turner thing to do. And an even more Jay Gruden on first down thing to do. Hell, if the defense left the 2 outside WRs uncovered and put 11 guys on the LOS, Jay would still have called the same running play for 0 yards for 4 years. But I digress.

I also think they need to run the ball, however if the opponent is taking that away, they're giving you something else, and you have to take what they're giving you. I have no idea what Dallas will try to do this week. Even with a depleted WR corps, we should be able to move the ball. If they stack the box to stop the run, even with our current WRs, we should be able to pass "ok." If they play more neutral, we should be able to run the ball.

100%.

You won't see me complaining so much about the playcalling and timing for the Bears game. It's one game, but yes, you won't see that from me. I DO complain not just about a bunch of stats though - note I consistently talk about the timing and tendencies. You can call a bunch of runs - if it's predictable, you have a real problem.
In this Bears game, overall within our scheme, I didn't see a big problem. However, again - I do think we are handicapped with this scheme. Probably nothing to do about it, but yes.

Yes I agree with you, the reason we almost won is because Kliff *didn't* stick to running! I hope anyone would agree that when you have a QB like Daniels and an OC like Kliff, in the situation the Bears D presented, absolutely be smart about it.

However, I think our run game is stoppable in part because it is predictable. I think we cannot dictate as much with our run as much as our pass, because the formations and scheme we run are more predicated and friendly towards passing. So be it. This game wasn't poorly called overall (in my mind), and we lost because of some unfortunate mistakes, and our inability to get the same out of the other side. Too bad stupid Ben J got this one. I know I am not alone in that opinion, as to the various references to chainsaws and his posterior that I have seen. Haha

Even with that, if you count the Daniel's rushes as rushes, we ended up with more rushing attempts than passing attempts.

If you just exclude all of Daniel's rushing attempts altogether, some were scrambles and some were intentional, we still had 20 rushes to 26 pass attempts, and that isn't entirely out of whack either.

I really trust Kliff at this point. Is he infallible? No. He's going to have bad games, as is everybody, and from time to time, he's going to be out-coached by a really good DC. However, he's going to out coach plenty of DCs along the way also, and he's making water out of wine at the moment with our skill position players.

When Norv was asked once about play calling and not running enough, he said something like (in his Norv Turner voice) "There are always a few play calls you want to change when you go back and look at it." It's true with everybody. Norv was a bad HC, but probably should be in the HOF as an OC. He is one of the best OCs in NFL history.

If Jayden hits Deebo for the td rather than the int his yards jump to around 230 and he has one more completion making him 20 for 26 with 4 tds and 0 ints. If McNichols doesn’t have the 1 drop hes now 21 for 26 and his rating jumps to 142.6.

Considering the personnel I think the passing game was pretty surgical. The run game was irrevocably altered the moment Bill fumbled on drive number 2.

Offense turned it over 3 times so they have to take the larger share of the blame but it’s ultimately the result of not playing complimentary football. Especially through the first quarter and certainly not the last 4 total, (offense+defense), drives of the game.

This loss undeniably sucked, BUT, I could make a strong case for why it simply isn’t as bad as it feels. Now if it compounds over the next several games, especially with what it looks like is happening to the receiver room, that will be a different matter in the macro sense.

Damn. I was wrong. I could have sworn it was Tee Martin. I've been posting Tee Martin for weeks. And I got the guy's name wrong. Damn, do I feel foolish.

I posted something like this last week, last week was the last week they could elevate Martin. They're going to have to do something even if Deebo plays. If he plays, then Deebo, Lane, McCaffery and Brooks are the 4 active roster guys, and they probably want at least 5, maybe 6 WRs on the active roster for game day. They could elevate 2 players.

The reason there is a roster vacancy is because they put Noah Brown on IR and didn't fill that spot. Well, maybe they did with the DE they signed, but then the put him on the IR the next day.

So that's the roster opening.

I think Nicki is probably right, they sign Martin, elevate another guy, and leave Cosmi on PUP for the week. Then they'll probably cut Martin and activate Cosmi next week. Sucks for Martin.

So after elevating him the maximum 3 times, they actually aren’t going to do anything with Martin going forward, not even one last “permanent” elevation before a cut, apparently:

I'm curious whether, if McLaurin and/or Deebo are out this week, the team will activate Robbie Chosen.

That really sucks for Martin. I thought he played well enough when they activated him to keep him around but apparently not.

Life is tough man. Life is tough…..

Kliff is up against the wall this week. He is going to need to use weapons he has used sparingly or not at all so far.

The obvious weapons Dallas will be keying on are Luke, Lane, Ertz and Bill.

During the Patriots reign of terror they were up against this numerous times. How did they handle it? They would focus more heavily on a specific background player. A FB, a backup RB, or maybe their second or third TE. That's what Kliff needs to do. It could be finally including Sinnott in all different ways, or Bates, or how about using Bill or CRod outside like I'm sure he would have with Ekeler had he not been injured.

This season is a writeoff as far as winning goes. Now’s the time to focus on player development (coaches)… through giving players more opportunities and experimenting with play-calling.

And from a GM POV, start trading players that aren’t going to be here next year. As many as possible.

They are 3-3 with a chance to be 4-3 today and people are acting like they are 1-5 and JD is on IR already.

Hopefully the team doesn't give up on the season so easily.
