I think it's on Fowler.

I get the sense that AP's offer insulted him because he got double digit sacks and instead of negotiating with him as a premier pass rusher, he treated him like a specialty player. In other words, AP wanted Fowler to get paid and Fowler wanted to get PAID.

He is somewhat of a specialty guy though. Can't stop the run and needs a blitz to get pressure

Some of St. Juste's DPI calls were sketchy as heck. There was one game where Hocculi called him for pass interference because his shadow fell over the receiver.

(He's gone because he lost the trust of the coaching staff. I think his departure will help both sides.)

You’re not wrong, but the guy must have the stiffest neck in the league—never even attempted to get his head around, leading to tons of iffy calls

For the most part I think the team has brought back the right guys and jettisoned some others that chronically under performed like St. Juste.

My one caveat is Deiter. I can’t believe there wasn’t another C/G available who at least has the size and strength to compete inside even if they lack uber quickness and overall athleticism.

Deiter being back is odd. Because he was actively (not passively) bad when he had to play.

The other one which I really wish they had brought back was OZ. He was the type of guy you want and a tone setter, even though he was never going to be elite. I think, though, between Terry, Deebo, Noah and McVaffery, his role would not have been as big and maybe that’s what he saw.

He was a total liability in the run game. He couldn’t Set the edge.

It was telling how little he was used in the NFc championship game. When we knew we had to stop the run, he wasn’t even on the field

I wonder if we are eying some June cuts. Feels like we are done shopping in free agency until after the draft.

I think we will sign a few more players-I think Peter's is looking for bargains with unsigned players

I'm not sure Allen would have been willing to restructure and take a pay cut.

He got signed for a 3 year, $60 million dollar deal in Minnesota with $31 million guaranteed. I think this team was uncomfortable giving him that kind of contract. And he's not going to take significantly less than market value.

Overall, I actually like the DL better this year than last year, but they need to find one more piece, an edge rusher who can apply pressure to the QB and win matchups. That was Fowler last year, but he could ONLY do that. He was a complete liability in the run game.

My guess is that's where we go with one of our first 2 draft picks.

I don't think there are any areas which got worse.

QB: same
RB: so far, the same. But draft upcoming
TE: probably will be the same
WR: better (Deebo)
OL: better (Tunsil, and a few of the other additions could play, and we might still draft a guy)
DL: overall better, lacks edge rusher
LB: same
Safety: I think this is a question mark, but probably either the same. If there's one spot which might not be as good, this is it.
CB: better (Jonathan Jones)
ST (all the same)

Is it like leaps and bounds better? Maybe not. But I don't think it's worse, and I think the two things they set out to do, get another legit WR and stock up on guys who can stop the run, they've done.

Looking purely at the D-Line:

I think if we are unbiased, the biggest question mark is simply Kinlaw. A lot of money was put in that one place, and at this point most analysts are putting a question mark on it (not all though). However, when you look at the D-Line on opening day last year vs opening day (projected) this year, there is one simple reason for hope: we have less of Rivera's picks, and more of AP/DQ's picks. That is unfortunately (for Rivera) a pure reason to be hopeful.

Kinlaw may or may not work out. There is reason to doubt. However, overall, you have to think that moving further into the new regime's era is going to lead to improvement, again, at least in the aggregate.

I can't imagine it. Payne is not the most motivated player. The only year he really excelled was his contract year. Just does not seem like the kind of guy who would give anything up unless it was an ultimatum, "Take this pay cut or we're cutting you."

That’s not how things get done in the NFL. Players restructure deals sometimes because it’s ’win win’ - maybe they get more guaranteed money, additional incentives, a contract extension for more money but spread over a longer deal. They don’t take pay cuts ‘for the good of the team’.
