2024 - Way too early draft thread

Exactly. I don't like Jim Irsay but look at what he has done.

He realized in 1998 and 2011 that he had one of the worst teams in the league and intentionally traded players and TANKED to get the #1 pick and go on to select Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck.

He didn't have to give up any compensation to get pro bowl/all-pro caliber passers.

The only real trade up I can recall that worked out big time for the trading team is Denver with John Elway.

The Colts in 1983 received a lot of compensation but Elway turned out be one of the best players in NFL history.
 
Close circuit to any mock draft creators.

It’s ok. You can start Mocking Michael Penix Jr. to the first round. Even middle of the first round, or higher. It’s ok. No one will think you are a bad person.

what do you consider 'monster'

Chiefs traded up for Mahomes
Ravens traded up for Jackson
Bills traded up for Allen
Ravens traded up for Flacco
Falcons traded up for Vick


Also, i'd say Wentz worked out, though he may not have become an elite QB, he was the QB for 80% of the season when Philly won the SB, and was the odds on favorite to be MVP when he went down..


This isn't me necessarily endorsing a move up in the draft btw, but when the right guy is there...

Not sure I'd consider the trade for Allen monster. The Bills gave up a second and a third and swapped firsts.
Maholmes is closer to a monster trade: They swapped firsts, added a first and a third rounder. That's substantial, but nowhere near what we gave up for RGIII, the Eagles gave up for Wentz, or the three first rounders the 49ers gave up for Lance.
 
The Ravens trade up to the final pick in the first round turned out pretty nicely.

The Ravens traded up with the Eagles to select Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. In order to move up, the Ravens sent their 52nd, 125th picks and a 2019 second-round selection to Philadelphia in exchange for the 32nd and 132nd selections this year.
 
I think there's a good chance the Patriots beat the Jets in Belichick's final tilt in New England.

New Orleans should beat Atlanta if Carr continues to play well and avoids INTs.
 
So this weekend we are Pats and Saints fans, and pretend like we want to beat Dallas.

Based on the last 30 years, I fully expect us find a way to pick somewhere between 3-5.
 
It's weirdly "can't lose."

If everything falls in place, then we land at number 2 and we likely get Maye who is a highly prized QB prospect.
If everything falls apart, we get Fashanu or Alt who are elite left tackle prospects and get to see Howell continue to develop.

Howell can be a good QB in this league, but he needs support. I even think Howell can grow into a franchise QB. He showed us a lot in adversity, then fell apart, and last week showed again when protected he can deliver. He does need to get better at reading/diagnosing defenses, but all QBs perform worse under pressure and he has been under nonstop, often immediate pressure all season. Given these beliefs, the idea of getting a franchise level left tackle would make me pretty happy. At the moment, I think we have to replace the right guard, right tackle, and center most, but we need linemen very badly.

Maye or Williams are obviously intriguing as franchise QB prospects. If they can fulfill their hype then we are set for a long time.
 
Agreed on the win-win view.

Would add that if we end up not in position to grab one of the current Top Two, and end up "settling" for an elite LT or other consensus blue-chipper, we'll almost certainly still take a QB. With the extra 2nd and 3rd's we'll be in solid position to move up if necessary into later in the 1st, or more likely the 2nd or 3rd, to take a guy with upside who can sit and learn behind Sam or whoever ends up starting on opening day.

I would put the odds at about 85% we end up with a Day One or Day Two QB come April.
 
Am I inverted? Whichever position is being manned primarily by Paul and Charles. No more first name guards!
 
Yeah, that's LG. Our RG heading into next year is Mr. Cosmi, whom PFF has recently fitted for a gold jacket. :)
 
We desperately need OTs.

Charles Leno is 32/33 years old and starting to show he is wearing down with consecutive injuries.

Andrew Wylie is a natural guard and should be moved inside or he needs to go. He simply doesn't hold up in pass protection and in today's NFL that's what playing OT is all about.

The fact he grades out as an acceptable run blocker doesn't move the needle.
 
It's worse than that, BD.

Lucas, our top sub at both OT positions, is out of contract in March and will be 33 when the '24 season kicks off.

While you have called out Wylie's on-field limitations quite well, we could talk about his age too - he will be 30 by opening day in September.

Trent Scott started in place of Wylie this last week. He will be 30 before the Super Bowl

Every other OT on the roster is in their first or second year and were either an UDFA or should have been an UDFA.
 
My guesstimate was that we needed 3 or 4 new offensive linemen in 2024 just as we did in 1981 when Joe Gibbs came to Washington.

Center and both OT spots are certainties. The other guard spot is a question mark.

And we need a two-way tight end as well.

If we take a quarterback at #2 or #3 I would expect to see a TE taken with one of those other top 120 picks.
 
Don’t worry, we’ve had have Rivera’s 4th rounder Braden Daniels in the lab all offseason.
 
Stromberg is on IR as well. It's been a safe place for Ron to put the guys that weren't ready to play in the NFL.

Then he could release them the next offseason with as little fanfare as possible :rotflmao:

I remember Daniels draft bio.

ESPN had him as a #6-#7 round projected pick and Rivera took him in Round 4.

Just another example where Washington got less than fair value for a pick.

It's one reason the Eagles and Dallas are 11-12 win teams and we are a 4 win team.
 
The jury is not out on Stromberg though and he wasn’t IR‘ed due to a pesky hangnail.
