2023 Washington Roster Moves

I really liked our offseason looking back on it.

We signed the best player we had on the field in 2022, Daron Payne, to keep him here during his prime years.

We kept our draft picks and utilized them and didn't trade a number of them away for veterans who could hold down a spot in the short term.

Personally, I would have been more aggressive in moving up within the draft to try and stock even more top shelf talent that fell out of the first round, but overall it was a 'sane' draft compared to some others we have seen in the past.

Most importantly, we didn't make any move in the offseason, including at quarterback, that would lock this team into a 5-7 year commitment for big dollars.

The new owners, spending over $6B for the franchise, deserved the chance to make that decision after 2023.

If Harris and a new front office want to make an Aaron Rodgers-type trade, that's for them to decide.

But the idea of Rivera going out and making this type of deal on his own was the last thing we needed.
 
I do wish that Rivera and the FO had paid a bit better attention to our obvious weaknesses. You can make an argument they tried at oline, but guard is such a big question mark. Linebacker also was largely ignored.

There’s still time and maybe at Olime Charles or Paul emerges, but I’m uneasy about this team’s history of not addressing the biggest issue.
 
I’m not concerned with the LB situation as the game has changed and the position is no longer as vital. If the DL and Dbs are anywhere near what they are cracked up to be the defense will be very good to very, very good.

OL? Completely different story.
 
I think much of the OL play will depend on Howell.

If he is decisive with the ball and on target with his throws, then this line is likely going to look like a huge upgrade over last year's.

On the other hand, if he wastes time, hangs on to it, and waits for his guys to "run open", then we are going to wonder if there were any OL upgrades done at all.
 
I don’t know what Del Rio is thinking at linebacker.

As a former LB you would think the team would have strong depth there.

But it seems he and Rivera are in love with the idea of using the ‘Big Safety’ or rover as the solution on the second level.
 
Andrew Norwell has been released. That is a surprise given the OL is not exactly a Pro Bowl level unit.

This guy at 30 is evidently as beat up as Jason Peters was at 40 😟

I still think you get interior OL in the draft and we passed up some pretty good prospects in Round 2 and early in Round 3.

Gates comes in having missed most of the past 2 seasons and ‘wins’ the center job?

He was the #3 in New York.

Appears the critique that Stromberg was picked early and projected by many to late 4th or 5th selection might have been right

Chiefs love ex-Washington players.

Kendall Fuller, Bashad Breeland, etc.

Somehow Reid seems to get more out of them then we do :(
 
These guys are capable of 100 tackles a year…. And they’re walking the street. Why are we no pouncing? Even if we’re minimizing the ‘need’ for LB, these guys instantly upgrade the room

 


Tress way dealing with tightness. That’s one dude that doesn’t need preseason reps
 
Why even sign another guy if it's just tightness?

I doubt Tress is concerned, but that's a waste.
 
They signed him because someone has to punt on Friday. Plus, they still have to work on punt coverage and returns in practice. That’s why these rosters are so big in the preseason. They have work to do and need someone to do that job. Plus, if this issue does linger, then they have an established relationship with this guy if they need him.
 
During preseason?

Didn't the Patriots play an entire regular season game without a kicker?

We sign safeties, running backs, and punters. Meanwhile we need OL and reap spots filled.
 
Especially during preseason. You can’t work on punt returns and punt return coverage without a punter.
 
I don't agree with that at all. With how sissified the NFL has become anyone can boot the ball 30 yards and cover a fair catch.

I would think it's more worrisome as perhaps a bad sign related to Logan Thomas?
 
Bates can't catch (but can block) and Thomas is always hurt.

Those are the realities at TE.

Depth was really needed here.
