2023 Washington Roster Moves

I'm really pissed that they doubled down on Logan Thomas, a guy who missed 13 games over the past 2 seasons and who has only played a full season twice over a 7 year career. That's another area where we had a chance to upgrade at one of the strongest positions in the 2023 NFL draft and did nothing.
 
Thomas should've been cut a few months back.

Still OT seems to still be the biggest need on this team.
 
For a team with a long history of very good to great OTs they now seem just fine with average serviceable ones.

Is OT no longer one of the three most important positions on the field?
 
They are really being stubborn about the o line.

My point was that Bates had a chance to take a strangle hold on this job and he dropped the ball, quite literally. If they were confident in him, I don't think this move is made.
 
Just a little bit on Kaden Smith...

Played 3 seasons for Stanford - finalist for John Mackey Award his 2nd season.
Drafted by 49ers in 6th round of 2019 draft before being picked up by NYG
Big kid - 6' 5" 250 lbs
Good hands, almost 80% career completion rate
Known as a good run blocker.
Rookie year caught 31/42 for 268 yds, 3 TDs, almost 9 yds per reception
Reps cut in half in 2020 and greatly reduced in 2021.
Failed his physical in 2022 and did not play.
His lack of athleticism and speed has hurt him at the NFL level.
 
Cole Turner is going to be a big part of the offense in 2023.

John Bates is a replacement level player and Smith may be less than that based on his missing last year after failing his physical.

At best a trade of one for the other on the final roster is a push UNLESS Smith is 100% healthy and recaptures his decent form in 2019.

Going back 4 years looking for productivity and regular reps is a long shot.
 
I think they're going to TRY and make Cole Turner a part. He played in the Mountain West conference and had 1 decent and 1 good season (62 catches for 677 yds and 10 TDs). Best things going for Turner is obviously his size. He's pretty quick for a guy his size. Started as a WR so he is pretty athletic. He needs to show he can handle the physicality at the NFL level. It would be nice if someone like Turner lived up to the hype because the guy who showed us the most promise (Armani Rogers) isn't available.

I wish we would get away from always going for the tall, lanky TEs instead of the kind of TE the Giants and Dallas prefer, big, strong, nasty all-purpose guys who can catch, get YAC, and block. We seem to want our TEs to be glorified WRs and not much more.
 
Tight end is one position where you see guys come in and either switch to the position or transition from being other sport stars and make fairly quick contributions. Big time contributions in the SEC to me don't seem to be a requirement for the position ;)

The Raiders moved Todd Christiansen from fullback where he played in Dallas to tight end and 2 years later he was a pro bowler. You can look at Antonio Gates or others that played very little or any college football but were producers in the NFL.

While Turner may not be a Gates in terms of physical talent, if a guy has a knack for catching the ball and can sense the spacing of defenders around him, he should be successful.

Logan Thomas came into the NFL as a quarterback and didn't become a TE until he was 26.

It's a shame Thomas is like Jordan Reed in that he just can't stay on the field.
 
That's the issue though. Guys with athleticism like Reed and Thomas tend to have immediate impact but can't hold up long enough to be major contributors. The guys you referenced were big, physical guys with the frame to play TE and take the beatings necessary at this level. Given that Turner is in season 2 and has already had injury issues doesn't seem to bode well. Hope I'm dead wrong about him.

No surprise - Badgley never was serious competition. Let's hope Slye has a better year.

 
I know some were questioning why we signed him in the first place, but I guess one thing we hadn't thought about was that Way was the holder for Joey Slye kicks, so we almost had to sign someone. I don't know whether this is an indication that Way is going to be out for an extended period or not.
 
I was disappointed that they never brought in any serious competition for Slye.

Just window dressing.
 
And for a team like Washington that figures to be in a lot of games that are settled within 7 points during the season, NOT ensuring we have a tangible asset at the PK position is one of the clear mistakes of the offseason.

One thing I have noticed is that Washington under Rivera is willing to pay for some positions but Ron treats kickers as if they are week to week replaceables, with little separating one from another.

Unless you have an Eagles type team that can expect to score in the 30's and defend to 10-14 points most weeks, you would think a team will prioritize having a guy that can hit a 52 yard field goal to win a game in the fourth quarter or overtime.

But not Washington.

I guess Ron wants his quarterbacks and especially Howell in 2023 to depend upon themselves and not the 3 points to win games :behindsofa:
 
On the other hand, "Jacked" Joey Slye has started the 2023 campaign pretty strong. I'm okay with not spinning up the revolving door at PK again heading into this transition year.
 
Slye's MO is not that of a guy who can't make a kick to win a game, it's that he has trouble consistently producing so the coaches and his teammates know what they are going to get out of him week to week.

A team can live with a guy that is lights out from say 47-48 and play call so that the distance is in that range or inside, etc. or go for the first down.

What the team can't live with is a guy that makes a 51 yard field goal in the rain one week and then misses a 31 yard chippee in sunshine the next Sunday.
