The question also is, are the players worth tying up cap space down the road for?
Washington has 10-12 core players that are worth paying and a larger group of younger players on rookie contracts (who are not a cap issue) and mid-tier guys who at this point are simply year to year performers, ie they are replaceable.
One thing that has really frustrated me over the last 5-6 years, other than the quarterback position, is the situation at safety.
We have signed free agents, we have used multiple draft picks, and still we end up during the season bemoaning the fact we can't cover tight ends and give up maximum yardage on blown coverages down the middle of the field.
Good teams like San Francisco and Baltimore are able to find safeties and linebackers when they need them, either by making a bold move in trade (Roquan Smith) or by using targeted draft pick(s) or free agent signings where they actually come up with the starter they need.
It seems we have spun our wheels with a succession of candidates that are hyped coming in the door but then quietly leave or become backups when they don't elevate.
