The other side of that argument is the Giants played their starters and tried everything they could to be ready for today and they basically got taken to the woodshed for a good ass whooping for most of the game.
Remember the Giants were the best team in preseasons with the best +- and all that jazz
I’m more of a “play a bit in preseason” than not. But there isn’t a right way to prepare the team.
The goal is also to win the last game, not the first.
Another thing: Quinn and company might have watched preseason and still thought they could win with a B- performance.
Could be. The way Quinn answered it, he definitely didn't come off dismissive about preseason reps. lol, maybe he was just pandering to Loverro who asked him the question but it came off like at a minimum he gets there is trade off either way.
like you I am more of a play a little. Doesn't have to be a lot. Also, my take on the preseason has been misundertood by some on this thread. I flat out said multiple times it wasn't a criticism of Quinn and even if they did lose to the Giants, it could be losing the battle to win the war. Having said that, like I said I don't know one way or another. Still don't.
As for game 1, (game 1, maybe game 2) Jay Gruden style, I think taking the preseason that lightly could blow up in your face if the opponent took it seriously. If the opponent didn't likewise take it seriously either clearly I wouldn't give a rats behind. But it wasn't a macro criticism, its specfically to the start of the season.
And it wasn't the ONLY reason why I had concerns. It was one in a list. But apparently that was the one that irritated some people who don't agree about the preseason so that's the point in the mix that got attention when I debated this game. I don't think it matters much either but my fear is that it can matter when your opponent takes it seriously and you don't but again as just one in a litany about the matchup and not the only reason. I don't think yesterday was some definitive answer on that point. It remains a point of contention, some teams think it matters some don't. And some smart coaches in the mix have said it does -- so at a minimum its not some looney bin take on my end where i am out there lonley on an island.
But I still picked them to win as we got closer because as bad as the Giants O line is, it becomes a disaster when Thomas doesn't play. Not that Thomas alone holds that unit together. But when he's out, you can attack that O line from any direction. And their win-loss record I saw in X somewhere is horrific when he's out.
Agree, they might have looked at the Giants as easy prey and so take your chances. Knowing from what I've read about Quinn, I gather he's especially with a veteran team wants them rested for the long haul. He gives them days off in camp. And camp from what I heard was really light. So he's likely going for them to be fresh.
As for your point about the Giants, I didn't really think about this angle until your post. But as to their success in the presason (which didn't worry me that much the more I digested it, it was more about reps), a lot of that was about Jaxson Dart, not Wilson. Dart got a lot of play time and killed it. Does that matter or not? You got me. Will see. The biggest out of nowhere QB I can think of that killed it in the preseason and ended up good was Prescott.
From what I've read the Packers are also one of those teams that take the preseason seriously. And unlike the Giants, they are actually good. Although Love didn't get a lot of reps because he got banged up in preseason game 1. Washington wouldn't have beat the Packers yesterday IMO. But I am not as worried about rust in game 2. Mainly because the rust was so apparent in game 1 for Washington that i think they can fix it. The odd thing about the preseason through game 1 for this team has been penalities -- problem in the preseason with backups, problem with the starters. They need to clean that up. If you have 100 yards plus in penalities -- you tend to lose.
While I expected a slow start from our outside WRs because of missing preseason but more so camp. And that indeed happened especially with Terry. I don't think they can beat GB with Terry AWOL. So hopefully he can ramp up. While I thought Orlovsky was over the top when saying Terry needs 4-6 weeks to ramp up. I do think think two weeks is possible. Granted, I'd feel differently probably about Terry if they connected on that deep ball. Hopefully that happens on Thursday.
