Official Game Thread - Week 1 - Giants @ Commanders

To piggyback off this tweet, theres no way in hell BRob turns this running play into a 42 yd gain. I like BRob but he way too often couldn't see that the hole wasn't there, bounce it to the outside, and get up the field. Bill did that without hesitation.

Congrats to the kid to having a great first game with the team and hoping for many more.

HTTR!

Sinnott had a huge block on that one too.
Yeah he did okay, but I’m pretty sure he whiffed or got beat on his block when tress way got hit. Only bad thing I saw from him. Hope we see a bit more from him this year

The last part sounds like a humblebrag. You might not enjoy the end of the movie as much as you seem to think, Mr. Schultz.

Schultz is a national reporter, I don't think a Packers fan. I took it as a complement to both teams -- movie because it will be a great showdown.

When is the last time we could say that we played sloppy as hell but still won easily because we controlled both lines of scrimmage?

Feels damn good!

Exactly, and if you told me Washington's QB would be sacked more, they'd have twice the penalities and lose time of possession -- and they won anyway?

Not sure they controlled the offensive line scrimmage as to pass protet, in spite of Brady complement about it -- but considering the Giants rush, they did relatively well. But they certainly ran on the Giants D line. And Washington's defense dominated.

The entire idea is that he’s financially incentivized to give it 100% effort in a way he wasn’t the last couple of years due to the contract structure. We couldn’t cut or trade him this past offseason like we could Allen.

If he wants to stay and make that money, he has to perform at the top of his ability. If he wants to get paid if we decide to cut him loose, he’ll get paid more by another team if he’s put top of his ability tape out there.

The point of cheekily calling him “contract year Payne” is because his contract is at a realistic crossroads that demands his full effort either way, in a way it didn’t after he signed his extension. We have an off-ramp for the first time since he put pen to paper, and he has to actually perform to get that money. We’ve seen this before with him, so there’s precedent.

You and JP are technically correct but in reality wrong, and the point about us finally seeing “contract year Payne” level prep and performance again for a reason is correct 🫡

It's just about exactly like it was for Jonathan Allen was this off season. You can cut bait and save a ton on the cap, And everyone who covers the team has echoed, Payne likely released even if they intend to bring him back. Contract needs to be renegotiated. He's not a 28 million dollar player, not even close let alone going into his 30s.

To say otherwise would be like whomever is covering the Terry contract has missed the plot with the contract he just signed where they said its basically a 1 year extension ontract -- and instead they are stuck with every penny on the 3 year deal whether they like it or not so the guaranteed money aspect of the deal isn't important.

It’s a next year problem one way or the other. But they could easily just keep him. It’s not a ridiculous cap number like $35 where they have to either renegotiate or release him. They would have all three options.

It’s way too early to tell what they might want to do, but my point is they don’t have to do anything.

Which makes it not entirely true that this is a contract season for Payne. Which was JP’s point and I agree with it.

He'd have to have one heck of a season this year and in turn you'd also have to believe he doesn't just turn it on during contract years.

The way he's played in the last two years he's closer to an 8 million dollar DT than he is a 28 million dollar one. That's not sarcasm. That's the going rate for 30 something decent but nothing special DTs. Realisticallty he's sort of a Tomlinson type, who I actually like better than Payne, who is getting 14 million.

I still believe we would’ve drafted Henderson if he fell into our range, but we all see why AP seemed very comfortable to keep letting this RB class pass them by, as the prospect they spent a lot of time with would be waiting for them late in JCM.

What’s interesting is that it also means he has excellent relationships and sources around the league, to know that nobody else would reach for Bill higher, once the draft got to a certain point and a certain number of teams had already taken RB’s. There’s an art to that, tracking rosters and needs and picks around the league as the draft goes on and taking calculated risks based on that.

Croskey-Merritt, I get the fall. He only played one game last year. He played inferior competition. They didn't use him in the passing game. And he's 24. And he's a RB. It was a gamble that he'd drop still but he did. He was around that 6-7th round range in mocks.

He was a fun watch because he was a violent runner and explosive. In that one game he played last year against his former team he was great. Ditto in the East-West game.

I watched his video on youtube about the game. It's a worthwhile watch, I'll give him credit he's funny when he rants.

I used to watch some of the Giant fan rants about them drafting Daniel Jones and play it for my kids for laughs. This one os up there with those.

I just hope AP, Quinn & Co. are smart enough to realize that it’s only bc Payne knows we’re liking cutting his contract this offseason that he worked so hard lol. We gotta let him go or trade him to a team willing to restructure him and give him guaranteed money, bc it won’t last. We’ve seen it, and now Quinn has seen the difference in effort as well. He’s capable of that effort all the time and doesn’t give it

This is the exact same narrative we heard about his contract year. Locked in. Focused. Different.

The first time during his contract year he didn't hide his motivation, among other things he'd make money signs after every sack.

I love that he's motivated again. This could be a SB season. Let him have his last big year and then cut bait IMO. He can get his bag from someone else in FA is my take.

Was anyone else expecting a Bill home run late?

I love when a defense is desperate late in a game. We had the ball on our 5 and the lead. Defense selling out. You break one hole and BAM your fantasy darling has a 95 yard TD.

Sure enough Bill busted one.

The other side of that argument is the Giants played their starters and tried everything they could to be ready for today and they basically got taken to the woodshed for a good ass whooping for most of the game.

Remember the Giants were the best team in preseasons with the best +- and all that jazz

I’m more of a “play a bit in preseason” than not. But there isn’t a right way to prepare the team.

The goal is also to win the last game, not the first.

Another thing: Quinn and company might have watched preseason and still thought they could win with a B- performance.

Could be. The way Quinn answered it, he definitely didn't come off dismissive about preseason reps. lol, maybe he was just pandering to Loverro who asked him the question but it came off like at a minimum he gets there is trade off either way.

like you I am more of a play a little. Doesn't have to be a lot. Also, my take on the preseason has been misundertood by some on this thread. I flat out said multiple times it wasn't a criticism of Quinn and even if they did lose to the Giants, it could be losing the battle to win the war. Having said that, like I said I don't know one way or another. Still don't.

As for game 1, (game 1, maybe game 2) Jay Gruden style, I think taking the preseason that lightly could blow up in your face if the opponent took it seriously. If the opponent didn't likewise take it seriously either clearly I wouldn't give a rats behind. But it wasn't a macro criticism, its specfically to the start of the season.

And it wasn't the ONLY reason why I had concerns. It was one in a list. But apparently that was the one that irritated some people who don't agree about the preseason so that's the point in the mix that got attention when I debated this game. I don't think it matters much either but my fear is that it can matter when your opponent takes it seriously and you don't but again as just one in a litany about the matchup and not the only reason. I don't think yesterday was some definitive answer on that point. It remains a point of contention, some teams think it matters some don't. And some smart coaches in the mix have said it does -- so at a minimum its not some looney bin take on my end where i am out there lonley on an island.

But I still picked them to win as we got closer because as bad as the Giants O line is, it becomes a disaster when Thomas doesn't play. Not that Thomas alone holds that unit together. But when he's out, you can attack that O line from any direction. And their win-loss record I saw in X somewhere is horrific when he's out.

Agree, they might have looked at the Giants as easy prey and so take your chances. Knowing from what I've read about Quinn, I gather he's especially with a veteran team wants them rested for the long haul. He gives them days off in camp. And camp from what I heard was really light. So he's likely going for them to be fresh.

As for your point about the Giants, I didn't really think about this angle until your post. But as to their success in the presason (which didn't worry me that much the more I digested it, it was more about reps), a lot of that was about Jaxson Dart, not Wilson. Dart got a lot of play time and killed it. Does that matter or not? You got me. Will see. The biggest out of nowhere QB I can think of that killed it in the preseason and ended up good was Prescott.

From what I've read the Packers are also one of those teams that take the preseason seriously. And unlike the Giants, they are actually good. Although Love didn't get a lot of reps because he got banged up in preseason game 1. Washington wouldn't have beat the Packers yesterday IMO. But I am not as worried about rust in game 2. Mainly because the rust was so apparent in game 1 for Washington that i think they can fix it. The odd thing about the preseason through game 1 for this team has been penalities -- problem in the preseason with backups, problem with the starters. They need to clean that up. If you have 100 yards plus in penalities -- you tend to lose.

While I expected a slow start from our outside WRs because of missing preseason but more so camp. And that indeed happened especially with Terry. I don't think they can beat GB with Terry AWOL. So hopefully he can ramp up. While I thought Orlovsky was over the top when saying Terry needs 4-6 weeks to ramp up. I do think think two weeks is possible. Granted, I'd feel differently probably about Terry if they connected on that deep ball. Hopefully that happens on Thursday.

Yeah he got beat on that one, he did some good things and some bad things. I just figured we were all dogging him for messing up that punt protection so I would point out he had a key block to spring Deebo.

Edit: My mistake on this, that was #22 not #82.
