If I’m right and the number is fundamentally the same as this year I could totally see them just having Daron play out his contract and then let him hit FA. Assuming he plays well.

Spotrac seems to be down at the moment but I looked this up a few weeks ago. Payne’s 2026 cap number is like $1.5m more than his cap hit this year.

Right but the penalty for cutting him was immense this year, and isn’t next year. He’s only here at this number this year because that’s what the contract demanded, I highly doubt that’s what AP would want in a vacuum for the level of player he is. I strongly believe he would’ve been gone if his contract was consequence-free like Allen’s was. If we could guarantee he’d be today’s Payne for another couple years, maybe. But we can’t.

Maybe I’m wrong though. They know the man behind the contract much better than I.

It’s a next year problem one way or the other. But they could easily just keep him. It’s not a ridiculous cap number like $35 where they have to either renegotiate or release him. They would have all three options.

It’s way too early to tell what they might want to do, but my point is they don’t have to do anything.

Which makes it not entirely true that this is a contract season for Payne. Which was JP’s point and I agree with it.

He did have positive receiving yards

And he earned some swag points for being a bowling ball white dude wearing #44, but they don’t track those on PFF

He also had a heck of a blitz pickup where he put somebody on their butt if I remember correctly.

He made a couple plays, his best play was on a screen pass where he just bowled over three guys, and he had a great block in pass pro, but those won’t show up in rushing yards.

Honestly our defensive front smothered everything including Skattebo for most of the game, they had a great day.

The entire idea is that he’s financially incentivized to give it 100% effort in a way he wasn’t the last couple of years due to the contract structure. We couldn’t cut or trade him this past offseason like we could Allen.

If he wants to stay and make that money, he has to perform at the top of his ability. If he wants to get paid if we decide to cut him loose, he’ll get paid more by another team if he’s put top of his ability tape out there.

The point of cheekily calling him “contract year Payne” is because his contract is at a realistic crossroads that demands his full effort either way, in a way it didn’t after he signed his extension. We have an off-ramp for the first time since he put pen to paper, and he has to actually perform to get that money. We’ve seen this before with him, so there’s precedent.

You and JP are technically correct but in reality wrong, and the point about us finally seeing “contract year Payne” level prep and performance again for a reason is correct 🫡

Just such a relief to start the season off with a good win. Short turnaround vs a team that is another legitimate playoff hopeful.

A loss against them will not sting nearly as much now. Obviously rooting for a win, but there's less pressure since 0-2 is off the table.
