Yean I think of Kinlaw evolves into what he was billed to be before that draft as this game wrecker style DT -- it will change this defense potentially into a top 10 one.
I was one of the few who was disappointed in the Lane selection in the 4th. I really wanted an impact RB with burst with that pick and this was the draft to find a guy like that. I had no idea this exact back would be available in the 7th round and was then fine with the WR pick given Terry's future status. One look at this video confirms what I had always believed, this guy can be a prime impact back. He reads the hole so well and of course has the burst we have needed for years.
We have not talked enough about that goal line stand after the bad call which set the Giants up with first and goal from the 1.

Really nice job by McGee (and Harris). The downside is that he and Harris called out the eligible lineman and then Magee ran over to cover him last minute… so either someone else didn’t realize it was their man, or it took magee a while to figure out it was actually his man, lol.
That red zone defense - especially after the penalthy on 4th down and giving the Giants another fresh set of downs - was when I was completely sold on this defense. That was a statement… they dominated. They gave uo nothing.
And no one is talking about the 2nd and 15 play by Ekeler that iced the game. Finally someone made a statement freaking play!!! It’s no coincidence that Samuel scored on the very next play.

I had a load of backs that I liked in this draft. But once they were gone, I was on the Croskey-Merritt train in the late rounds. Good start clearly. Will see if he can keep going.
I liked Lane a lot before the draft and liked the pick. But I got to give credit to Todd McShay he was early on the Lane hype train so that's what got me to watch him.
Watched the game again and here are some observations.
Coleman played really well, pretty excited about him.
Conerly however was solid in run blocking but had real issues in pass protection. Got beaten around the edge and on a bull rush. Have we ever talked less about our first round pick? We all just kind of assumed, with the obvious growing pains, that he would lock down the RT position and be an upgrade over Wylie And that of course may very well happen, but it's not a given and something to keep an eye on.
Despite the DL being really good I didn't hear Johnny Newton's name once. I'm tired of hearing about his potential and performance in preseason games. As good as this year's draft appears to be missing on Sinnott, McCaffery and possibly Newton as well are big misses. It's too early to make a call but you need to hit on 2nd and 3rd rounders, they are the foundation of your roster.
I've been down on Quinn Martin, figured like Robinson he was fine but they could do better. Now I see why there has been so much buzz about him, he was flying to the ball. But we need more turnovers from this secondary.
Jeremy Reaves delivered another big hit, just as he tackled well in the preseason. Have no idea how this guy improved so much but nice to see him in the rotation.
This is stating the obvious but the DL is noticeably bigger. Hard to judge them against such a piss poor OL but man they look to be much better. Happy to have been wrong on Kinlaw, that guy drew doubles most of the game and still got penetration.

Supposedly Newton had 5 pressures? Anyways, I think Payne really benefits from being smaller than someone else (Kinlaw) on the DL.
I think it's possible some better schemed up rushing attacks can exploit us, but our DL works well against offenses that don't expect or can't exploit penetration.
We did a lot of shifting gaps and then pushing hard to the RB mucking up their run lanes. They have to cut early, other OL panic a little from the penetration allowing cleanup lanes by the LBs. Won't work every time but it worked great against the Giants.
They had 8 in the box a lot, they didn't fear Russel Wilson and have much more confidence in the corners who obviously played very well. Let's see how this works against the better offenses.

The last play, was the same play that we gave it to Deebo to score. That is playing 4D CHESS. Running plays in the beginning, so they know them, and then going to full opposite way later. Awesome. Kliff is in mid season form.
