The All Things Terry Thread

I will wait for the actual numbers but…this.

I will root for him like I would any mercenary because of the team but will never again see him as a core Redskin/Footballer/Commander again.

Congrats Bro. 😑

This is the way I feel also, but I doubt Terry cares about our feelings. I will root like crazy for him, but I won't be buying his merchandise. I doubt he cares about that too.

I'm glad this is finally over, and we can put this thread to bed.

Thing is we already controlled Terry for at least 2 years. He was under contract for this season and the Franchise tag next year would have been less than this contract he just agreed too.

Can’t remember where I read ir heard it, but some well-known retired player said that GMs should be careful relying on using the franchise tag as a replacement for signing their star players…I think he said something about it having a very real negative effect on the locker room and team culture stuff. Basically players hate the feeling of “Tough shit, you gotta play, we own you” that using the FT brings with it.

I think the Bengals made a mistake by franchising Tee Higgins and then paying him a top salary. With Burrow and Chase already sucking all the oxygen out of the offense under the cap, it seemed that the Bengals needed to spend remaining dollars on the defense.

Instead they ended up with their best player on that side of the ball holding out and their #1 pick not signing right away because the team was refusing to slot him with same terms the players in front and behind him received from their new clubs.

Franchise tags to me are most valuable when you have a player you need for THAT season but can then plan to draft a replacement or trade for one the following year.

If you intend on extending the player in any event, putting the franchise tag on him often ends up in teams paying more as other players new contracts only up the franchise tender the next year.

We know what was loudly reported about Terry’s demands,

I’ll stop you right here lol…

IMO, “Loudly reported” is another way of saying “speculated.” And I don’t believe it’s incumbent upon either side to address every piece of speculation tossed out in reporters’ tweets. That’s what Jerruh and Micah do, constantly go out and publicly address stuff that gets speculated on…and even then you can’t trust what either side says.

It’s what I actually liked in all of this—no apparent desire to constantly “correct the record” from either side and do negotiations in the media. If Terry’s agent leaked something, no need in Peters’ eyes to correct it. If Peters leaked something, no need in Terry’s eyes to publicly correct it. I didn’t read it as it being proof that what was leaked was fact…just not worthy of a response. Which is what adults do. Which is why I pointed out Jerruh and Micah earlier lol…

I feel like the facts come out down the road, while the leaks and speculations come out now to generate clicks.

Washington knew McLaurin was going to ask for relatively big money (yes $27-28M is less than $32M) but the fact we drafted OT and CB at the top of the order and didn't bring in a veteran deep threat gave Terry the 'flex in the rope' to hold out and ask for near top dollar.

Last year I was really hoping after a very lackluster performance by receivers in 2023 that Washington was going to move up in Round 2 and try and snag Keon Coleman or another wideout with size and speed to pair with Jayden for the future.

We drafted Johnny Newton with our first second round pick and I hope he validates the draft bio I originally read on him, which had him rated as the #20 overall prospect in the draft.

How is it arrogant if it’s factual?

And notice I never said anything about viewpoints being right or wrong in an echo chamber, only that opposing perspectives were rare.

It’s not in the least bit arrogant. I posted similar thought about, oh, 50 pages ago. I may have been pissy but not arrogant. 🤣

I get that. But if the players really hate it that much they should have negotiated it out of the last CBA.

I get it in principle, but Terry’s camp was extremely concerned about their public image and messaging during this whole situation. I think it stretches the bounds of belief to think that they wouldn’t have leaked something if the numbers being reported as Terry’s big ask were incorrect, as they played a large part in making him look like he was in the “wrong” in the negotiations. There’s no way they let national media spew for over a month that he was asking for DK Metcalf+ money if it’s not true, imo. They showed way too much care for what was being said about the situation. They absolutely were not above it all during this process, and wouldn’t let erroneous reporting that made Terry look delusional stand uncontested. Hence, more likely true than not if we have to choose (which, we don’t—but just for the sake of conversation)

keon coleman was okay as a rookie, but he didn't really stand out on an anemic receiving corps though. i expected them to take a receiver earlier this year, if anything.

You don’t see how it reads as arrogant to pop into the last page of a long thread, declare that you’re glad you didn’t enter the thread for the first 80+ pages, and diagnose the thoughts being currently posted (that you’ve just read) as being the result of an “echo chamber”? It has an inherently negative connotation

And now you’re arguing that opposing perspectives were rare in a thread that you admittedly did not read.

Don’t get me wrong, we went around and around in circles for months lol. That’s indisputable. But given the entire point of the thread was to post and diagnose the conversation happening about the topic elsewhere across the spectrum, I think it did lead to a lot of informed (as much as possible) takes on the subject. That doesn’t mean other perspectives weren’t considered, it means all the various information informing the perspectives ended up in here. And lo and behold, you still have plenty of people disagreeing in here about the situation and Terry himself.

I don’t see how your take could come across as anything BUT arrogant tbh, which is why that was my first knee jerk assumption, and then you doubled down. No hard feelings, I get that the term “arrogant” similarly has only a negative connotation (ironic considering my reaction to “echo chamber” having an inherently negative connotation). In this case it’s descriptive of a comment you made, not a judgement about your inherent state of being.

He hasnt played well enough during his career to demand 32+ million, so he needs to play better then he has before. Barely getting past 1k yards a season is not that impressive, thats like 57 yards a game.
Terry was drafted the same year as DK Metcalf. DK Metcalt got a 32+million a year extenstion from the Steelers. Terry has five 1000 yard seasons to DK's three.

They may have been drafted in the same class, but DK is 2.5 years younger than Terry. That matters.

(Also, DK got overpaid like crazy)

He’s two+ years older than DK and I think that’s been the biggest sticking point all along. Age is way more impactful than number of years in the league. Statistically there’s tons of evidence that the vast majority of WR’s (even HOF level talents, which Terry is not) fall off after 30 (and especially after 31/32). There are exceptions (not many), but there is no way to tell ahead of time who the exceptions will be, there is no statistical trend to follow (aside from blind optimism). That’s been the major issue all along.

DK came into the league at 21-22. Terry came into the league at 23-24. It’s no one’s fault but that’s going to potentially influence career earnings, it’s a fact.

Wouldn’t be surprising if that was the #1 point of contention in the negotiations, especially since Terry was obviously sensitive on the point in interviews.

Also, as others have said, the Steelers put themselves in a bad situation with DK in contract talks by trading significant capital for him without an extension in place. But at least he’s earlier in his prime. Steelers have quietly been a real mess for a long time, anyways.

I get that. But if the players really hate it that much they should have negotiated it out of the last CBA.

I doubt the owners/NFL would give up one of its forms of leverage over players as well as over other teams, though.
