There are other factors but metcalf would be paid more by most of the league if they were both unrestricted free agents.

i get it. i'm just happy to close this chapter and hope everything is all systems go week 1. i worry terry is gonna be slow off the starting block for the first 3 or 4 weeks because of his absence during the off season. if he is...i will be first in line to criticize him for the bullshit this off season.
 
I think DK and Terry are roughly equal. Both good, neither truly elite. Neither is worth top 5 money, so DK got overpaid. But again, the 2.5 years younger thing really does matter when you're talking about a guy hitting 30. We know statistically that the vast majority of receivers experience a drop off at around that age.

Especially considering Terry's agent seemed to have Fowler in their pocket and all they did was leak to him how low this team's offer was without a single mention of how the reports of what they wanted for example were hyperbole. A lot of noise coming from Terry's camp and zero of it was hey don't believe we were asking for that much.

We got Nicki from WP, now Athletic saying at one point they want the Metcalf contract as just the starting point in negotiation, meaning higher than that. Schefter saying well north of Metcalf. C. Robinson saying he heard top 4 WR money, implying 35 million plus. Rapoport saying north of 30. That's a lot of different reporters.

No rebuke of any of that from Terry's team. Their focus was on this team's offer and how hurt he was.

Keim will usually weigh in if national reporters have it wrong based on his sources and he never did.

Heck forget all that. If Terry is getting 32 AV. It just about confirms the 35 plus million or so ask. What are the odds that reportedly "tough" negotiator Peters folded completely and gave Terry the highest ask that he had. That would defy logic. And it would make Peters an atrocious negotiator. Usually there is some sort of compromise is a long standing negotiation -- versus the player getting exactly what their highest demands were.
 
yep they have almost identical numbers over the course of their career and DK is a couple years younger and was also battling much better WR competition for workshare. I think this deal is fair for Terry but if he was seeking Lamb, Chase, and Jefferson money he was truly out of his mind.

i'm just gonna say that it's a bit unfair to say terry didn't do anything as the sole receiver getting the #1 corner and double coverage rolled over to him but give dk credit for producing while "battling WR workshare". truth is probably in the middle. terry is not an elite #1...dk is an elite #2.

the 32 AAV is going to be an illusion, imo. i'm gonna wait till the concrete contract details come out to give peters a grade. if it's not a front-loaded, incentive-based 32 million, i'll be disappointed in AP.
 
I put zero value in the speculation around Terry's contract situation because the usual reliable insiders weren't even close on this one. It's the gift and the curse of having a professional front office that doesn't leak everything to the press. We are a long way away, thankfully, from the Shanahan days. He should have just given the the Insiders a cubicle at Front Office.
 
I know these contract details are complicated, but it sounds like this puts him in the top 10 at his position but not the top 5, which is fair enough and about what most of us expected when this started, though I still hate that we had to endure two months of drama that could be detrimental to the team.

It also looks like Terry is now our second highest paid player, I hope he plays like he deserves it. I also hope the team has some flexibility at the end of the contract so we can sign Jayden, Tunsil, etc., and have some recourse if his production drops off.

In the end though, I’m glad this is done. We’re a much better team with Terry on the field, and now we can get back to tracking Terry’s movement up the team record books. He is currently 5th all-time in catches, 6th in receiving yards, and 8th in receiving touchdowns. If he plays out this contract at his usual 75 catches for 1000 yards per season, he will be a lock for the Ring of Fame.

I agree its been beaten to death but there's a fine line between pointless back and forth and having no message board action because people are afraid that the topic is stale.
There's only so much to talk about on here so it often gets circular but its either that or stare at blank screen refreshing it from time to time wondering why you're not out fishing instead.
 
I find it very hard to believe someone as good as AP is, with a great reputation and masterful job he has done here in Washington so far, caved at the last minute and overpaid Terry. When the numbers come out, this will be back loaded, and Id imagine AP is viewing this as a 2 year extension and TM will be cut loose by 2028 season. Terry was playing hardball due to pride, and I'm assuming he is thrilled to see some of the social media posts and reactions about how TM won the staring contest. That's the vibe he was looking for. Good, let him think that. Let him feel he got an elite contract with high AAV. That was very important to him.

We got a good, dependable target for Jayden back in the fold, but will be cut loose when it's time to back up the brinks truck for JD. And we will have drafted/signed TMs heir apparent by then. This contract helps us in the short term, doesn't hamstring us in the long term. I hope it takes a bit for the numbers to come out so Terry can get all the positive praise, and we all move on. I have a feeling the people who care about the numbers and the long term health of our cap will be very pleased with the job AP has done to get Terry on the field and set us up for success in the future.

I don't actually think you're entirely right on this.

Schefter, Rap and Rossini all said about the same thing about Terry's ask, that he was asking for DK money. And very importantly, none of them credited the other, so it wasn't just "pick it up and use it." Also, they were careful with their phrasing, they clearly had heard it from somewhere, not just "guessing."

And even more importantly, nobody contradicted it. If that wasn't the ask, Terry's side would have contradicted it immediately somehow.

Almost all of the folks I listen to + Sheehan (who I think I heard say this through skinsinparadise because I no longer listen to him) said it was clear the team put that information out there. My list includes Galdi and Bram.

So, while it's impossible to know for 100% certain, I think it's fair to assume the team wanted people to know what Terry was asking for. And it got reported in the national media, and was never contradicted.
 
Glad this has eventually reached a conclusion. Is there a requirement for the full details to be disclosed? I feel that KillBill26 summary is bang on the mark. Leave it a few days then release the details when the media circus has largely moved on.

at minimum, it'll be on spotrac at some point, for sure.
 
To those of us that have been following this in real time, there’s been very little to speculate about. It’s been easy to identify who is reporting what and why. Initially, a lot of us - including me, had no clue that Terry was hellbent on DK+ numbers. But when multiple prominent NFL insiders all land in the very same range on Terrys ask, and the other side doesn't correct the narrative -it’s safe to say the NFL insiders got the ask right.

Even looking at the headline 3/96 $30M signing bonus today, tells us it’s very likely Terrys ask was reported correctly. There is zero chance that AP cowered and gave Terry exactly what he was asking all along.

If it comes out that this is a true 3/96, heavy guarantees, etc. I’ll believe Adam caved. It’s very likely much more team friendly than that, and he’s simply allowing them to pretend they won the war.
 
Breer was on Grant and Danny. The way he’s phrasing things, it sounds like this might be a tear up existing deal and replace. He doesn’t have the details yet but he’s essentially saying this year and most of next year are probably guaranteed and then we’ll see what it looks like in age 32 year. He’s making it seem though there would be no 4th year.

FWIW he’s been pretty on the nose of the temper of this thing throughout.

I would LOVE it if we did replace his current year completely. If the three years are age 30, 31, and 32, and the last one is easy to move on from, it’s a masterclass from AP.
