The All Things Terry Thread

I dont see the tag being above 30. Mid 30s would be in par with the top 3 WRs in the league. I believe the tag is for the average of the top 10.

It’s the top 5, which would be:

  • 1. Cincinnati Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase: $40.25 million
  • 2. Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson: $35 million
  • 3. Dallas Cowboys WR CeeDee Lamb: $34 million
  • 4. Pittsburgh Steelers WR D.K. Metcalf: $32.99 million
  • 5. Philadelphia Eagles WR A.J. Brown: $32 million
So yeah, the franchise tag could be in the $30s.

Yeah that’s not the actual math becuase those are AAV numbers.

It’s the actual yearly salary, and it includes some bonuses, which counts towards the franchise tag.

For example, Ja’’mar Chase’s salary for next year is $17m + bunch of random bonuses and cap hit for 2026 is $25m.

All I can say is literally all the reports including Schefter and Keim and Rap and JP said they have heard the franchise tag next year will be about $28m. And given they have ways of finding out the answer, I trust them.

I do know the AAV doesn’t mean anything or factor into the equation.

In fact AAV is a completely useless number. The numbers which matter are signing bonus, guaranteed at signing, total guarantees and cap hits.

Franchise tag for receivers next year likely going to be the low to mid 20's like 23 or 24 million. Lets say 24 million. However Terry would get more than that. Why?

  1. The tag equals the average of the top 5 WR cap hits over the last five years (2021 through 2025),
  2. Alternatively, it’s 120% of his prior year’s salary if that’s higher.

For 2025, the projected WR franchise tag is expected to be in the $23–24 million range (numbers fluctuate with the salary cap). Based on the 120% rule it would be 28 million and some change. However, Terry has incentives in his contract that give him extra money if he makes a pro bowl this year. The 120% also applies to the incentive money from the pro bowl so if he makes the pro bowl this year the tag would be 30 million and some change.

I think they take the average of the past five years for non-exclusive tags and the average of the current year for exclusive tags.

Yeah I don’t know, these contracts are complicated for sure. My understanding is that keeping him on his current contract and tagging him next year would be a savings because of his salary this year, but maybe the franchise tag is less than he’s asking too.

Whatever those two years would cost in that case, we should offer him more than that guaranteed, and he should take it and get to work. The season starts soon!

That’s the reporting. He is asking for much more than the franchise tag for the next 2 years, meaning 2026 and 2027. He’s not going to get that.

It would be better for the team to let him play out his contract this year and then franchise him in 2026.

If you believe the reporting the franchise tag would be $28m next year, he’s going to get $18m this year and $28m next year if he’s franchised.

Thats probably about right for him anyway. I suggested just doing that as part of an extension.

But he apparently wants a ton more.

Peters’s needs to give Terry a take it or leave it final offer tomorrow and ask for a decision by Monday.

Enough of this. It’s time for Terry to come to work or decide he’s sitting out and they can send him home and then not pay him.

It’s resolution time.

I've been saying this for weeks. Like some others have said, "shit or get off the pot."

Go get 'em AP! ❤️

Agreed.

I imagine their first offer was low in expectations of real negotiations, they would increase their offer to a degree.

Pisses me off Philly nabbed John Metchie and not us. AP is playing chicken betting that Buddy boy will cave, by not adding an insurance policy. Maybe Lane will save the day.

With Terry MIA there is going to be even more pressure on JD5 to carry the offense.

With his legs.

It’s been made unnecessarily dramatic and a nuisance by Terry’s camp, but it’s no game of chicken.

Terry is going to play.

It boggles my head because I can't conceive of a life where I have the kind of money he already has! I feel like my head would be on establishing a legacy at this point. Help the team win a chip and cement your place in the teams ring of fame.
I completely agree. I will never understand this, but maybe it's because I'm an old dude who's aspirations of playing professional sports were laughable.

You have more money than you or your family will ever need. Why not try and get a championship as well? I just don't get it.

Yeah he'll play. The question is when. You think he is in for week 1, sounds like. If so, whats the hold up.

We all hope you are right. One or both are going to have to concede for your prediction to come true for week 1. Currently its a stand off, I call it playing chicken. Splitting hairs.

TMC's got 2 amateurs whispering in his year - Buddy and his bride asking for a trade. They are going up against a professional.

Who do you think comes crawling back and flinches first? They are the chicken.

Realizing he isn't going to play anyway but be interesting to see if he is in uniform on Saturday

Ai weighing in.

I'm done with Quinn calling this anything other than a Hold In. This "return to play" and all the other nonsense is just dumb at this point. I know Quinn is trying to walk a line of being supportive of Terry and also tell the truth, but this narrative needs to end.

And the "I'm not going to play 'Where's Waldo'" quote from Quinn to the question Ben Standig asked was funny. But the reason he is getting asked questions is because Quinn has played along with this ridiculous narrative of the injury being the reason he's being held out.

One VERY IMPORTANT quote Quinn said, and I don't know if it's been posted, but he said: "He's healthy now, which is a good step to getting on the field."

That's a critical quote from Quinn. No more of this injury nonsense. I'm done with it. Call it what it is, a hold-in. He's not practicing because he's angry about his contract. Which is fine, but no more of the bullshit cover.
I am not sure. I think the “cover” sometimes helps not tank value. Sometimes in a purely business sense, you need to maintain value for a potential trade. Something our team never seemed to do in the past because ego was more important.

He won't sit out the whole season.

He shouldn't sit out any of the season. It's $850k per game that he sits out.

That's madness.
It depends.

We can do the Math.

If he wants 35 and isn’t budging and the team wants 25 and isn’t vocally budging, it’s over 10m apart. That’s more than 10 games plus the value of whatever additional years. I mean, he would make up 10 games missed with one year’s salary.

The issue here is he and his agent seem to think some number is attainable. What is that number? I am guessing it is 33 or thereabouts. How many years? Hmmm, I will go conservative for argument’s sake and say 2 years. I don’t see him getting that.

As I have said before in this thread a few times, teams have blinked in these circumstances. I am not sure what will happen but I don’t think Terry’s strategies have been good for goodwill, and that too is a big issue in these kinds of negotiations where you are far apart.

No, I don’t see it happening. I can only see him joining the team on their offer, or I can see him being traded. I can also see him sitting out as more and more likely. I am starting to think that is definitely a part of their strategy. I mentioned early it may be because of some recent history in the league. He just seems too obstinate. Hopefully a light clicks on.

Buddy has shown him Aiyuk holding the 9ers hostage and it working, maybe.

The team has no real reason to budge, other than goodwill, and that has probably already been ruined. No other team would give Terry that contract.

I’m with everyone else. We’d be better off making him play out this year and then franchising and trading him.

If he wants to play hardball, then that goes both ways.

Terry has really damaged his reputation with this nonsense. He comes off as greedy and selfish now. I get needing to get paid, and I am all for it, but don't ask for absurd money that no one else in the league thinks you're worth.

AAAANNNNDDDDD...the morons are out. Someone wrote into the Galdi Podcast calling for Peters to be fired. OK. Take your meds and head to the day room, nutjob.

As I think purbeast and others have said, it's probably better to be emotionless and consider it as a business.
Also it's important to consider what others do. Not to mimic, but to understand expectations and behaviors; those are important for the team's reputation.

Right now, having him play out the year is pretty standard. The other part is, after this year, you franchise him if you can't come to an agreement. Again, this is very much the standard procedure. It doesn't even need to be characterized as hardball.

This is why it's so important that AP continue to either be quiet or positive in his interviews, which I think he has been. Adults in the room, finally!
