The All Things Terry Thread

I have a question…

Could they rip up the current contract and replace it with a new deal, rather than tack on an extension?

A brand new deal that starts this season and has strong guarantees for the first two years and essentially team options beyond that, perhaps with void years to puff up the AAV, seems like it would be a good solution to the age issue since it always comes back to “he’ll be 31 when it kicks in”.

I believe that is an option the team has but I am not certain.
 
Sure, there’s a lot of ways to make this palatable. But Terry and his agent are inflexible and unrealistic. They’ve made it strictly about business, and that’s how the team should handle it. He’s under contract for this year, and we have the option to franchise tag him next year. No more talk of overpaying him for reasons of character and leadership, that’s all out the window now based on his words and actions. The team should cut off any further negotiations immediately until after the season to minimize distractions to the team. It’s all about business— so shut up and play or be replaced by someone who will. No more drama please. We as fans of this team have had enough drama for a lifetime, a fact that Terry should be well aware of.

Don’t get me wrong, Terry has out kicked his coverage big time. We don’t really know the details that are being discussed though. For all we know, the team is trying to offer to rip up the deal and he still thinks it’s not high enough on the money.

Mainly I’m just curious if someone could confirm it’s possible.

It’s kind of possible. There will still be the cap hit from the signing bonus he already received, it you can always bump up the money in a contract, or guarantee it. Both are pretty common.
 
One thing that struck me this morning, man, it seems like Terry is trying to hold the team hostage until they agree to his terms. His only leverage really is "you're going to suck without me" and the longer this goes, the more it seems like he's willing to see if that plays out.

He's trying to leverage the fact the team has lofty goals to at least go as far as it went last year, and believes he can use the goal and translate that into a mega contract.

I just don't see Peters going for it. I guess, maybe if Noah Brown is out to start the season, and the offense completely stalls, and they start 0-3, maybe he flinches...

But I doubt it.

It’s going to start costing him real money real soon if he goes down that path.

I agree. He thinks he can wrangle more money out of the team because of the expectations this year. He thinks we can’t do it without him. I’m almost to the point where I’m like

“ok Terry, let’s find out”

And also a year of eligibility if he were stupid enough to try and sit out the whole season. He'd be replaying Le'Veon Bell's brilliant strategic move then.

And reputational harm would also come with sitting out even part of the season. How much money is another team really going to offer to a 31 year old FA WR who actively harmed his former team by sitting out because they wouldn't give in to his delusional contract demands? Probably not much.
 
I'm done with Quinn calling this anything other than a Hold In. This "return to play" and all the other nonsense is just dumb at this point. I know Quinn is trying to walk a line of being supportive of Terry and also tell the truth, but this narrative needs to end.

And the "I'm not going to play 'Where's Waldo'" quote from Quinn to the question Ben Standig asked was funny. But the reason he is getting asked questions is because Quinn has played along with this ridiculous narrative of the injury being the reason he's being held out.

One VERY IMPORTANT quote Quinn said, and I don't know if it's been posted, but he said: "He's healthy now, which is a good step to getting on the field."

That's a critical quote from Quinn. No more of this injury nonsense. I'm done with it. Call it what it is, a hold-in. He's not practicing because he's angry about his contract. Which is fine, but no more of the bullshit cover.

Me too. THe other side is, I'm not sure he's entirely wrong that we can't get there without him. He's probably right, he's the best WR on the team.

But this is like somebody withholding sex to win an argument with their partner. It actually costs both of you and you're going to piss each other off along the way.

Yeah definitely feels that way to me. That among other things is what disappoints me about him.

Some of the radio hosts who cover this team have been hitting on variations of this point which is they didn't know Terry was that kind of guy. My words not theirs -- but implying mercenary and not the best team guy.

It's clear thay Terry isn't one of those dudes like in Tampa who are about the team winning and willing to give a team discount to stay including turning down bigger money in FA.

Learning that Terry would play for the Toronto Argonauts if they paid him more. And he will leverage whatever he can to bleed the team for whatever he can get.

As some said here favorite Washington players have built long term careers and love from fans of this team long after they retired -- Terry is burning some of those bridges.

Granted if-when he comes back and they have some success, much will be forgiven. But I don't think many will see him any longer as this non-diva good guy WR -- i think that part of his reputation is gone. I put Terry after this off season in the diva "Is about me, me" category of receivers.

He won't sit out the whole season.

He shouldn't sit out any of the season. It's $850k per game that he sits out.

That's madness.
 
What week does he have to be back from the season to count as accrued? 6? I thought it was 10 before.

I think they should send him home if he's not going to practice.

They are obligated to pay him and not fine him because he's there, but there's no point in him being there.

Kliff said he had little contact with him even in meetings.

I'm so done with this. Keyshawn his ass. Send him home, tell him to come back when he's ready to contribute. Until then, shut up, stay away and do Eastern Motors commercials.

Yeah it comes off like they are scared of him. They don't want to upset their uber sensitive and high maintenance diva player.

Maybe part of that is the national media, most of whom (not all) have Terry's back. And their narrative which drives me nuts is hey he's such a good guy, he should be taking care of for that reason.

His behavior with this contract, shows Terry isn't this angel of a dude. His actions indicate he's no Saint. So the argument that he should get paid like he is this paragon of good behavior is silly. His behavior is as selfish and as divaish as name that high maintenance WR in the NFL.

But yeah Terry's reputaion as being this good guy be damned -- take him on. He's lost a lot of esteem from fans and the local media. He's not untouchable. They can win the PR war.
 
As much as I love the team and I want them to win…I’m also a man of principle. I’m really at the point where it’s like fuck it, let it go nuclear. Send his ass home and let’s roll with the players who want to build something here even if they aren’t as talented. With a passion I despise DIVAs whether it be in the NFL or in any other discipline.

If it costs us a few wins this season to make the point so be it. We aren’t just building for this season.

Practice or leave.
