The All Things Terry Thread

Maybe part of that is the national media, most of whom (not all) have Terry's back. And their narrative which drives me nuts is hey he's such a good guy, he should be taking care of for that reason.
The national media is full of morons. I get that they set the narrative generally, but I have a lot of faith in Quinn and Peters to figure out how to message it.

"While we appreciate Terry being here, we really want to set the culture that if you're here, you're 100% here, not only partially here. Terry needs to do what is right for him. We want him here. but until he wants to be here, we think it's better he train and prepare on his own so we can concentrate on the players who are in the building getting ready for week 1. Also, we're not answering any more Terry questions until he shows up."

Get Schefter and Rap to report it, then get somebody to go on the Pat M. show and say it.

At the end of the day, it really doesn't matter what anybody thinks.

A lot of you are a lot more bullish on this whole thing than I am.

Whatever happens contract wise, Terry is a professional and he is going to play here this year, and probably next year and the year after, since the Commanders control him.

What is going on right now is just business. And we have absolutely zero clue what is going on behind the scenes. It's just hard for me to make any real opinions either way on all of this because I like to base my opinions on fact and we know none of the facts about what is going on.

See a post I made last night. This is not how you conduct business.

This is bush league in the way they are conducting their business.

Sheehan reported the other day that the FO is fed up with Terry and the Terry team. Quinn came off uncharacteristically testy when asked about where Terry was during yesterday's press conference.

I am guessing the team is about done with coddiling Terry. I think they are close to their breaking point.

The irony here is the outcome for Terry could be dire if this team pulls their offer for an extension. They can basically keep Terry at anywhere from 26.5 million a year for two seasons or 27.5 million or so at most. So he wouldn't reach the teams, 28 million a year (assuming that's true), and he wouldn't get the amount of guaranteed money he wants.

But the kicker is most WRs fall off a cliff in particular when they are 32. And that's when Terry would hit FA. And at that point judging what receivers at that age tend to make, it would likely be somewhere between 10 to 20 million. And this team could cut bait then.

So in short, his antics would end up in him losing money in all likelihood if the team decides to play hard ball.

Yeah it comes off like they are scared of him. They don't want to upset their uber sensitive and high maintenance diva player.

His behavior with this contract, shows Terry isn't this angel of a dude. His actions indicate he's no Saint. So the argument that he should get paid like he is this paragon of good behavior is silly. His behavior is as selfish and as divaish as name that high maintenance WR in the NFL.

But yeah Terry's reputaion as being this good guy be damned -- take him on. He's lost a lot of esteem from fans and the local media. He's not untouchable. They can win the PR war.
I agree. After last season I thought he would be so excited to play with JD again. I truly thought he cared about the team. Scary Terry no more.

Whether it's bush league or not, it's still just business. And a lot of people are making it personal. I'm just choosing not to.

See, we’re fans though. We can be rational and logical and I prefer to be that way. But the reality is that the only reason we care is because it is personal to us. It’s not our job, it’s our hobby/passion. It’s personal for fans in a way that it can’t be personal for Peters and Quinn and McLaurin. That’s our divine right as fanatics who spend our precious money and time to have our emotions yanked around by millionaires playing a kids game for billionaires.

So, yeah. I’m rational, I’m not a homer, I follow the rest of the league very closely and see all the angles on this. And yet Terry has taken a hit to his likability factor for me because he’s proving to be egomaniacal and delusional about his own worth. That’s an unattractive quality in anyone in my view, whether I know them personally or only observe them for entertainment from afar.

And as a consumer, if he hurts the product I pay for and support, I do not need to divorce myself from it by saying it’s “just business”. He has the right to do it, just like I have the right to care about it. The business is for the professionals, I’m in it to watch players I can stand rooting for try to win games, and we each have different boundaries on that. I don’t really watch player interviews, or follow them on social media, or care about them outside the game. I want them to be men worth rooting for, morally speaking, but I don’t get parasocial. I’m in it for the sport.

But I’m always pro-players in this league because fuck billionaire leeches. But Terry’s gone beyond advocating for himself in a way that I can feel solidarity with, he’s being greedy and selfish and unlikable as a man.

I just can’t imagine they actually trade Terry but if they do that would be a wild ending to this saga.
I just honestly don't see anyone paying him what he wants....does he hold out to his new team for what he wants, does he settle for less from another team just to say screw you? I honestly cannot see anyway a trade can possibly occur.

Terry is getting dug in to the point where he’d seemingly rather get traded and then have to take less money from another team just because of the disrespect angle, on principle. Even if no team would pay him what he desires, the fact that we currently hold his rights means we’re the target of the spite. He would probably sign for $29-30M elsewhere as part of a trade to save face, but we won’t benefit from it because he feels disrespected and spurned.

Still don’t think we trade him, though. Maybe after tagging him next offseason when we can better make a plan around his absence.

I could deal with it better if he showed up to minicamp, camp (he's under contract) and we didn't have that whining press conference. Not showing up the preseason game. The distraction he's been. And the egotisitcal driven demands coming from his own mouth -- about its not about the money but the team showing him they think as highly of him as he sees himself, and the shots at the FO, etc.

But when you add all the "me, me, me" behavior along with the ridiculous demands -- am done with it.

If it were me, I'd make him play out the season on the current contract. And tell him, he can either take the deal offered to him in the off season or they will franchise and trade him. And I'd rather franchise and trade him next off season and move on.

I don't see a "culture builder" being a player who is OK with being a distraction, who takes shots at the FO, and makes it clear as a bell that he's a mercenary -- it means nothing to him to win a SB or build a legacy in Washington, its only about the price tag.

The Tampa guys as examples. Talked about taking discounts. But even if they didn't and hit market value they came off sincere about wanting to end their career in Tampa.

We want dudes like that especially if they are the "leaders" of this team.

Why Chris Godwin spurned Patriots' $30 million offer, signed for less money with Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed Godwin earlier this offseason despite a $30 million-per-season offer from the Patriots, according to The Athletic's Dan Pompei. Godwin is on a new three-year, $66 million contract, which shows his confidence level staying with Tampa and quarterback Baker Mayfield after winning the NFC South last season.

...Concluded they would take less, much less, to stay in Tampa."

Lavonte David: 'Mutual respect' brings players back to Buccaneers

Yes, Lavonte David has taken what is described as a hometown discount by re-signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a one-year, $10 million contract with $9 million guaranteed, indicating he prioritizes staying with the only NFL team he's ever played for....

Licht pulled off one of the biggest coups of the offseason, getting receiver Chris Godwin to return for a significant hometown discount. The wideout mentioned the familial aspect of the organization as one reason he didn't want to uproot his family.
For David, the relationship with the front office makes Tampa different from other clubs.
"They want to play for this organization -- an organization like that -- and it just becomes a mutual respect thing," David said

...“I’d love to retire as a Buccaneer,” David recently told WDAE (via Pewter Report). “Getting to play in the same building my whole career like guys like Ronde Barber and Derrick Brooks, that’d be amazing. Just to walk the same hallways they walked their whole career. Especially Derrick Brooks, you all know how I feel about Derrick. Every time he comes around, my eyes light up. So, he’s definitely a guy who I kind of want to model after, just be a guy who played with Tampa their whole career and was just a staple for what they do.”

David is destined for the Bucs’ Ring of Honor, regardless of whether or not he plays elsewhere in the twilight of his career. He’s still playing at a high level, and the Bucs would have a gaping hole in the middle of their defense if they’re not able to re-sign him.

It’ll take some creative salary cap work, and maybe a little bit of a hometown discount, but don’t be surprised if No. 54 is suiting up in the only NFL jersey he’s ever known again this fall.

Mike Evans on re-signing with Buccaneers: “Tampa is my home.”

Mike Evans spoke with great clarity and was very upfront— Instantly articulating that a career goal for him is and has been to retire as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer.
“I obviously wanted to be a Buccaneer, and there were some things that we were working through. When you’ve played for one team for so long, you obviously think about what it would be like playing somewhere else. I have a lot of friends on other teams. It was a cool dream, but Tampa is my home – it’s where I’ve always wanted to be.

Terry could deny the reporting if his ask is being mis represented
I just honestly don't see anyone paying him what he wants....does he hold out to his new team for what he wants, does he settle for less from another team just to say screw you? I honestly cannot see anyway a trade can possibly occur.
You never know. There might be somebody who can/will. Or at least somebody who's willing to go slightly higher than us.

I have no idea. The NFL is wonky that way.

My opinion of Terry as certainly gone down a little as it seems like he's much more about the money but I also don't know what the discussions are between his agent, himself, and the team. It is possible he came off the PUP because he was told if you want to play week 1, we need you at practice now. In which case, he may be thinking I've taken this as long as I can and I want to play. He may just have a highly inflated opinion of his worth which his agent isn't helping him with so I can't discount that.

All that being said, the likely biggest factor of how I'll view him will be how he acts/talks when it's resolved (whether he gets an extension or he plays under his current contract). That will likely tell you the true character.

One other thing came to mind while listening to Galdi this morning. He was going through all the reporters who are reporting the contract terms which Terry is asking for, which is painting him in a bad light because literally everybody thinks his asking price is insane.

And I thought, well, what if that reporting is not correct. What if this is the team putting out information to make it appear as though Terry is asking for too much?

And then I thought, well, there's an easy solution to that: Terry or his agent could just come out and literally say, either directly or through a reporter, "Terry's asking price is being greatly exaggerated."

We haven't heard that. it wouldn't hurt their negotiating position to do it, and it would make the team look foolish.

But it hasn't happened.

Why?

The only thing I can assume is because the reporting on Terry's ask is accurate.

Or he doesn't care what everyone else thinks because it really doesn't matter.

Literally every piece of information that is out there is speculation/rumors. And there's so much of it that we have no clue what is and isn't true.

This is the same guy who went for 30 minutes at eastern motors whining about his worth and value as a player. If he were being mischaracterized, he’d say it. He absolutely cares what everyone thinks. That’s what this whole thing is about. He felt dissed at OSU, felt unrecognized his first few years in the league, then felt underpaid…bro cares about what everybody thinks about him A LOT.

What has been reported in more than one place is that he wants DK Metcalf money. Terry is not worth DK Metcalf money, so if that is the case then he’s out of line.

I believe that’s very likely close to the truth, otherwise, why are we still here talking about this?

And as a fan, yes I’m starting to take it personal, because Terry is messing around with my team in a way that is unwarranted. I’m a fan of the Washington Commanders not the Washington McLaurins.

The team was here before Terry McLaurin, and it will certainly be here when he’s gone. Our problem in DC is too often we fall in love with the players to the detriment of the whole. There have been numerous examples of this over the years.
